21. Marcel Proust Letters, Articles, Translations
marcel proust, English translations of his miscellaneous writings, articles and letters.
http://www.yorktaylors.free-online.co.uk/
~MARCEL PROUST~ Ephemera Site This is an informal site dedicated to publishing English translations of Marcel Proust's lesser known writings. Pieces and letters which, as far as I am aware, are not available in translation elsewhere. I am fully aware of my own limitations as a translator and these are certain to contain many errors, inaccuracies and misunderstandings. Please mail me with any constructive criticisms, corrections or improvements. I have tried to approach my translations in a similar spirit to Proust's during his period of Ruskin translation. One of Marcel Proust's friends (Georges de Lauris) once commented that he "would have been hard put to it even to order a lamb chop in a restaurant in English". That pretty much sums up my fluency in French, but armed with a few dictionaries, a French grammar and a boundless love and respect for Proust's writing I offer up my clumsy tribute to the great man. Since I first created these web pages volume 4 of Selected Letters has now been published. A small number of the letters here have now been included in Joanna Kilmartin's excellent translations, but the vast majority of the material below still remains untranslated elsewhere. Likewise Neugroschel's Short Stories. I will continue to add to these pages in the same spirit: this is a labour of love not of scholarship. Proust's Articles An attempt to list all of Proust's articles and miscellaneous writings.

28. Marcel Proust
The wellknown critic Paul Souday remarking on a long series of novels from the pen of a hitherto unknown writer marcel proust, pointed out that, in this,

The French novel might, of course, treat of various subjects and might vary in quality, but, nevertheless, it had become a most precisely defined commodity. Whatever its quality, it retained a constant value on the literary market. The smallest editions ran to one thousand copies, thc largest - into millions. All this was written by a whole series of talents, sometimes highly original, and published and sold by a whole series of merchants, sometimes quite remarkably unsuccessful. However, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the net result was the same little strawcoloured volume of about three hundred well-printed pages costing 31/2 pre-war francs - the so-called Charpentier type. Publishers considered thinner or thicker volumes with evident repulsion. Two volumes they looked on as a personal insult. Selected and complete works were, naturally, broken up into volume-units of this same size.

The eight-sided barrel, with its delicate engravings, recalls the style prevailing in Proust’s most creative period and, like the mountings, consists of 925 sterling silver.
The barrel is also decorated by the engraved signature of the writer. As a tribute to Marcel Proust’s most popular work, the rhodium-plated 18-karat gold nib bears a delicate engraving of an hourglass. Collector's Information Marcel Proust, one of the most popular French authors and philosophers of his time, fascinated readers with his books and their brilliantly observed descriptions of people and nature, and, as a charismatic figure of the fine Paris salons, he also delighted people with his rhetoric and wit.
In what is probably his most important work – “Remembrance of Things Past” – Proust’s new literary stylistic device, the inner monologue, was combined masterfully with his analytical descriptions, which, in their candour, often allow readers to see themselves in them. Collector's Information

    Drupal as the Archive
It occurred to me as I lay awake last night that Drupal could actually do much of what came out in our discussions at if:book
    • More images to be attached to passages. Commenting on the passages and, perhaps with a module, the images. Integration of Proust passages and commentary with services like del.icio.us, twitter, technorati. Use of modules to serendipitously or randomly highlight passages, images, and critical content.
The Drupal search tool would recall all of these. However, the downsides would be:
    • There would be no way to conduct a pagination search for in-depth study of a particular segment of the novel.

  • (1871-1922) French writer. Marcel Proust was a novelist, essayist, and critic. He was also a prolific letter writer. The work for which he is usually most often remembered is "À la recherche du temps perdu," which has been translated as "In Search of Lost Time" or "Remembrance of Things Past." Proust has also been called the founder of the modern novel, looked upon as a major influence on modernist style. Read more about Marcel Proust.
Proust's first novel was "Jean Santeuil" (1895), but he abandoned the work. In 1896, "Portraits de Peintres" and "Les Plaisirs et les Jours" appeared. He began writing his massive seven-part "À la recherche du temps perdu" in 1909, and he finished the final part just before he died. Based on this gigantic work, Graham Green called Proust "greatest novelist of the 20th century."

    ``Where the Bishop is, there let the multitude of believers be;
even as where Jesus is, there is the Catholic Church'' Ignatius of Antioch, 1st c. A.D
Excerpt from "Remembrance of Things Past"
    by Marcel Proust
I feel that there is much to be said for the Celtic belief that the souls of those whom we have lost are held captive in some inferior being, in an animal, in a plant, in some inanimate object, and so effectively lost to us until the day (which to many never comes) when we happen to pass by the tree or to obtain possession of the object which forms their prison. Then they start and tremble, they call us by our name, and as soon as we have recognised their voice the spell is broken. We have delivered them: they have overcome death and return to share our life.
And so it is with our own past. It is a labour in vain to attempt to recapture it: all the efforts of our intellect must prove futile. The past is hidden somewhere outside the realm, beyond the reach of intellect, in some material object (in the sensation which that material object will give us) which we do not suspect. And as for that object, it depends on chance whether we come upon it or not before we ourselves must die.
Undoubtedly what is thus palpitating in the depths of my being must be the image, the visual memory which, being linked to that taste, has tried to follow it into my conscious mind. But its struggles are too far off, too much confused; scarcely can I perceive the colourless reflection in which are blended the uncapturable whirling medley of radiant hues, and I cannot distinguish its form, cannot invite it, as the one possible interpreter, to translate to me the evidence of its contemporary, its inseparable paramour, the taste of cake soaked in tea; cannot ask it to inform me what special circumstance is in question, of what period in my past life.
