BIO Bestselling author Terry Pratchett is one of the world's most popular writers. His first short story was published when he was 13, and his first book was published when he was 23. Mr. Pratchett's novels have been translated into over two dozen languages, and have sold more than 45 million copies. He received Britain's highest honor for a children's book, the Carnegie Medal, for THE AMAZING MAURICE AND HIS EDUCATED RODENTS. Mr. Pratchett has one grown daughter and lives in England with his wife and several cats. AUTHOR TALK July 2003 Q: When you're writing a new novel, do you "listen with your eyes" at the world about you, or does a character, or a voice come into your head? What happens to get you to sit down your desk and write the opening words of a new novel? TP: "I'm not sure. I start with a handful of semi-formed ideas and play around with them until they seem to make some sense. Actually typing is important to me – it kind of tricks my brain into gear. I've got a packrat mind, like most writers, and once I starting thinking hard about a new project all kinds of odd facts and recollections shuffle forward to get a place on the bus."

He started work as a journalist one day in I968 and saw his first corpse three hours later, work experience meaning something in those days. After doing just about every job it's possible to do in provincial journalism, except of course covering Saturday afternoon football. he joined the Central Electricity Generating Board and became press officer for four nuclear power stations. He'd write a book about his experiences if he thought anyone would believe it. Links :

Pratchett and the Morris
Terry Pratchett is an English author, mainly of humorous fantasy novels; his most popular books are the Discworld series, taking place on a flat world that rides on the backs of four elephants that stand on the back of a giant turtle that flies through space. Read enough Pratchett and you start to notice something: a lot of references to morris dancing. From Strata The dancers were all robots, although the fiddler was human. Thump, thump went the metal feet on the dark turf, while early bats hunted for insects overhead. The steps were perfect. How could they be otherwise? There were no men to hesitate or stumble. The world was too full of things for the few humans to do that they should concern themselves with this. Yet they knew that such things must be continued against the day men could once again pick up the reins. Back and forth, crossing and leaping, the robots danced their caretaker Morris. Elsewhere in Strata Pratchett mentions a (fictitious (or, rather, it was fictitious)) morris tune called "Mrs Widgery's Lodger" and not for the last time.

Terry Pratchett Diagnosed With Early Onset Alzheimer's
Terry Pratchett, who many of you will know from the famous Discworld series of books and rpg, has recently announced that he's been diagnosed with "a very rare form" of early onset Alzheimer's. In a post on his site labeled "An Embuggerance," Pratchett revealed his condition to the world before, in true Pratchett fashion, breaking the ranks of solemnity as only he can. PS I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should be interpreted as 'I am not dead'. I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else. For me, this maybe further off than you think - it's too soon to tell. I know it's a very human thing to say "Is there anything I can do", but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry. He plans on writing a few more books and doesn't want everyone getting all mopey.

I need help!

For people who haven't read the Discworld books, how would you explain the Discworld?
I'm not very good at it, but other people have said it's fantasy for people who don't like fantasy, it's like Lord Of The Rings , 500 years on when everyone's settled down a bit and everyone's trying to make an honest buck.
It's a parody of fantasy and parodies of the real world, and humorous fantasy - it's all those things. You do have a lot of recurring characters you have Death, and the Librarian... Especially a very popular character! People keep writing to me, "Can we have more Death in this book?"

Terry Pratchett optimistic about Alzheimer's
'I am not dead.' Thus is worded the reassurance from bestselling fantasy writer Terry Pratchett , in a statement published on illustrator Paul Kidby 's Web site. Pratchett, writer of the Discworld series and wildly popular British author, second only to J K Rowling Images has used the space to reveal the news that he is suffering from 'a very rare form of early onset Alzheimer's.' The humourist is typically cavalier, saying that while it is only fair of him to make the news public, he isn't a goner just yet. 'I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else. For me, this maybe further off than you think,' he writes, calling the affliction an 'embuggerance.' He is also confident he'll be writing more soon. 'I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because there's time for at least a few more books yet,' he writes. Pratchett, 59, was awarded with an OBE for his services to British literature in 1998.

[Author Spotlight] Terry Pratchett
In mid-December, Terry Pratchett announced that he has a rare form of Alzheimer’s. He's staying optimistic that he will be able to fulfill his public appearances and book obligations for several more years and in typical Pratchett style, reminded his readers that he would like to keep things positive and that he's "not dead."
Pratchett is one of my favorite authors. I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet him last March at Mid-South Con, the local science-fiction and fantasy convention. He does not often get to attend fan gatherings in the United States since he lives in England. He was very friendly and quick to smile, autograph a book, or pose for a picture with fans. At a panel, he mentioned that health issues may restrict his ability to travel in the future, but he was very hopeful to continue writing.
His long-running Discworld series has over 35 titles and counting. The series began as a satirical look at the fantasy genre and over the years has morphed into something much larger. Pratchett uses his saber-sharp wit to poke at a variety of real-world issues and institutions which he satirizes in his books. Some of Pratchett's targets include academia, various works of literature, Hollywood, war, shopping malls, the press, the post office and even the birth of rock music, or rather "music with rocks in."

Terry Pratchett - Wintersmith
Terry Pratchett's Wintersmith is at once an age old story of how a God falls in love with a mortal, it's also a story of how the God (really the elemental of Winter, the Wintersmith) doesn't get his own way (cough) because he falls for a mortal who is also a witch the 13 year old Tiffany Aching.
There's little add to this - the Discworld is faced by eternal winter, unless Tiffany can spurn the advances of the Wintersmith and a certain young boy can complete a dangerous task. We also meet some of the Discworld's best characters again, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, and are treated to the formers superb "Headology".
A couple of times, I wondered whether I'd read some of this before - the descent into hell, that forms part of the quest felt a little like Will and Lyre's trip into a similar place in the third volume of Phillip Pullman's wonderful "His Dark Materials" trilogy. And is it just a coincidence that Tiffany's true love, setting out on his world saving quest is called Roland
Nevertheless this is a fun read for all Pratchett fans, though definitely not a good starting point for someone new to the series, and can I add how lovely it is to read a good novel in hardback, something that I rarely get a chance to do.
