Discworld Monthly Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is about a disc-shaped world that moves through space on the back of the giant turtle A'Tuin, sex unknown...but you probably know all this if you have gotten this far... Pratchett is one of the funniest writers today and with the release of "The Truth" in November, 2000, finally we got a new Pratchett here in the US the same time as the UK! Unfortunately, we still got the US covers, but getting them at the same time is progress. When ordering online, if you want the UK editions, order from a UK dealer. That seems to point up a significant difference between Europeans and Americans. A European says: "I can't understand this, what's wrong with me?" An American says: "I can't understand this, what's wrong with him?"

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.

Read the BBC Wiltshire interview with Terry Pratchett The BBC is not responsible for the content of external websites Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld series of science fiction novels, is one of the best-loved writers of the fantasy/sci-fi genre. The Discworld series are set in a surreal universe on the back of four elephants that stand on the shell of Great A'Tuin, the sky turtle. There was a huge surge of interest in Terry Pratchett's works after Radio 4 serialised his first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic in 1983. Pratchett's work forms a complex and humorous satire of both our own world and the literary conventions of the genre he writes in. His wildly inventive plots and characters include an orang-utan librarian and a wooden chest which both eats people and cleans clothes. The author writes for both children and adults and has produced a huge range of works - 65 fantasy books alone - in 1998 he was given an OBE for his services to literature.

Terry Pratchett has rare, early-onset Alzheimer's
Posted by Cory Doctorow , December 12, 2007 8:46 AM permalink Terry Pratchett has addressed an open letter to his fans (on Paul Kidby's Discworld News) with some genuinely awful news he has a rare form of early-onset Alzheimer's. His note is incredibly brave and chipper. The man's a real inspiration incredibly prolific, brilliant and talented, friendly and clearly as happy as anything with where he's found himself. Folks, I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news. I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of early onset Alzheimer's, which lay behind this year's phantom "stroke". We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism. For now work is continuing on the completion of Nation and the basic notes are already being laid down for Unseen Academicals. All other things being equal, I expect to meet most current and, as far as possible, future commitments but will discuss things with the various organisers. Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there's time for at least a few more books yet :o) Terry Pratchett PS I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should be interpreted as 'I am not dead'. I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else. For me, this maybe further off than you think - it's too soon to tell. I know it's a very human thing to say "Is there anything I can do", but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry.

26. Interview | Terry Pratchett
Interview with the author on his books and popularity made by Linda Richards.
http://januarymagazine.com/profiles/tpratchett2002.html
Buy it online Read January's interview with Terry Pratchett "Humor comes out of a deep soil. Humor puts down roots. Now wit: you can grow wit in a windowbox. And what Discworld now has is more humor, less wit. I didn't paste the jokes on top, but you could see them as part of the book. The point is, you have to develop one way or the other. I would not have the readership I have if I'd written effectively in terms of style, the same book 28 times." Terry Pratchett sells more books than... well... a lot of people. In the United Kingdom, where he was born and now lives and works, Pratchett sells to put it bluntly more books than God. Terry Pratchett is, hands down, Britain's bestselling living novelist. And publicists are quick to point out that fully one per cent of all books sold in England that's backlist, frontlist and yesterday's news list were written by the diminutive native of Beaconsfield, Bucks, England. A self-described fantasy author, Pratchett has penned 28 books set in Discworld, the alternate universe the author says began in 1983 with hilarity but that has lately been maturing to a more thoughtful brand of humor. Those 28 books have been translated into 27 languages and have sold over 22 million copies. There have been three computer games based on Pratchett's Discworld, a couple of non-fiction books dealing with the science of the Discworld, a Discworld convention was held in late August in Hanover, Germany, there is a music CD called From the Discworld , there have been several Discworld animations and several newsletters and there are probably more Discworld-dedicated Web sites than can be counted. And while, until a few years ago, Pratchett's following outside of the UK was small and somewhat cultish, recent years have seen the number of Discworld fans growing in other places, as well.

Terry Pratchett sold his first short story, The Hades Business, at the tender age of 13 and bought a typewriter with the proceeds. His first novel, The Carpet People, was published when he was 23 and he continued to write in his spare time while working on local newspapers. Oddly in his thirties he left journalism, and spent the next eight years as a press officer for the Central Electricity Generating Board. And then in 1983 The Colour of Magic, the first Discworld novel, was published and the rest is - as they say - history. In 1987 Terry realised that writing was his future and he gave up his job. These days, he lives behind a keyboard in Wiltshire and says he 'doesn't want to get a life, because it feels as though he is trying to lead three already'. He is passionate about orang-utans but doesn't give a monkey's about anything else.

Bestselling fantasy author Pratchett reveals Alzheimer's diagnosis
CBC News Bestselling British author Terry Pratchett, creator of the monumentally successful Discworld series, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with a rare form of early onset Alzheimer's disease. The 59-year-old writer made the announcement Tuesday through a web posting to fans on the website of illustrator Paul Kidby, who has worked on many of Pratchett's Discworld titles. Terry Pratchett, above, was Britain's biggest selling contemporary author until the massive success of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Pratchett's books have sold more than 45 million copies around the globe.
(Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images) "I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and, of course, the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news," Pratchett wrote in a message titled "An Embuggerance." "We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism," he wrote.
