Mildred Benson, author of the Nancy Drew series The author of the series, still popular today, has died. The University of Iowa (the author's home state) special collection on Ms. Benson reveals how she viewed her heroine: It seems to me that Nancy was popular, and remains so, primarily because she personifies the dream image which exists within most teen-agers. Definitely, Nancy had all the qualities lacking in her author. She was good looking, had an oversupply of college "dates," and enjoyed great personal freedom. She never lost an athletic contest and was far smarter than adults with whom she associated. Leisure time was spent living dangerously. She avoided all household tasks, and indeed, might rate as a pioneer of Women's Lib. And Ms. Benson seems to have written her own end, in a way:

SELECTED LETTERS OF DAWN POWELL 1913-1965
As edited by Tim Page
Elissa Schappell Perhaps you are feeling sorry for yourself? Maybe you lost your guy, can’t make rent, or are hungover? Maybe you fear you can’t write anymore, are being dogged by collection agencies, or not getting the respect you deserve from those who bestow the laurels in the literary community? Maybe what you’d really like to do is reach out, write a letter, and infect someone with your misery and self-pity? Well, stop darling. Stop right now in the name of Dawn Powell! Before you start moaning and get all sloppy, rush right out and pick up the Selected Letters of Dawn Powell 1913-1965, edited by Tim Page, and take a lesson from the master of the comic letter. If you don’t know Dawn Powell (well, frankly, I weep for you), let me catch you up. Powell was a brilliant satirist who captured plain life in the American heartland, as well as the screwball sexual, social, and career hijinks of deluded, artistic urban New Yorkers in the 1920s-60s. A model of persistence, Powell wrote fifteen novels (among them: The Locusts Have No King, A Time to Be Born, The Golden Spur, The Wicked Pavilion, Angels on Toast, and Turn, Magic Wheel, as well as at least a hundred short stories, half a dozen plays, scads of book reviews and articles, a remarkable diary, and thankfully thousands of letters.

According to an entry in her 1932 diary, Dawn Powell wrote because she had no one to talk to. The accounts of the social life she led and recorded for almost forty years suggests, however, that she had plenty of people to talk to: John Howard Lawson, John Dos Passos, E. E. Cummings, Coby Gilman, Margaret De Silver, and scores of others who inhabited the literary circle of which, for four decades, she was a significant member. Her statement nevertheless identifies one of the demons Powell battled during most of her life; she had a bipolar personality, a manic-depressive tendency that... [The entire page is 1915 words long]

    DAWN POWELL
    Credits
Writer: Tim Page ; Genre: Biography B+ By Megan Harlan DAWN POWELL Tim Page (Holt, $30) Never heard of Dawn Powell? Though Ernest Hemingway once dubbed her his ''favorite living novelist,'' and Diana Trilling claimed she made ''the jokes that Dorothy Parker gets the credit for,'' she's virtually unknown today. Drawing heavily from Powell's sparkling diaries, Washington Post music critic Page evokes a witty, unconventional woman who, after graduating from college in 1918, escaped small-town Ohio for Greenwich Village where she enjoyed a 42-year marriage to an advertising executive (and countless affairs), developed a hard-partying lifestyle (even accompanying Dylan Thomas on his New York rounds), and wrote 15 novels, mostly searing satires about the Manhattan literary scene. If Page was trying to inspire interest in Powell's work, his intriguing, gritty bio amply succeeds. B+
