Read the comments and appreciations of writers and scholars on the death of Chaim Potok:

When I think about how audiences, both Jewish and non-Jewish, acquire their notions of Judaism in the modern world, I am convinced that these notions come not from sermons or historical studies, but from novels or plays or movies. In the first rank of these I would place Leon Uris's EXODUS, the musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and Chaim Potok's THE CHOSEN.
Students and adults I meet in my work have some awareness of the world of Hasidim in this country and the struggle of young people brought up in that world to forge an identity of their own. Those who understand the emotional and ideological struggles have usually learned about them from reading Chaim's books, especially THE CHOSEN. And what makes the book so compelling is the fact that the world of religion one struggles to leave is portrayed with such understanding and love. It is indeed rare that one finds someone, either in fiction or in life, who [can] view the world he ... struggled to leave with such love and sympathy. In all my conversations with Chaim, I never sensed any bitterness or anger about the constricted world of piety he left. This is rare. In his own life he retained a close link with those practices and beliefs he still found meaningful to him [as] a novelist and artist. I recall, for instance, a conversation we had about James Joyce, a paradigm of the young man who left the world of piety to forge his own consciousness. Joyce was clearly angry about the world he left, but Chaim didn't feel that way at all.

Mapping the Human Heart: Chaim Potok's The Chosen
by Marilyn Green Faulkner
"Long ago, in The Chosen ," Chaim Potok writes, "I set out to draw a map of the New York world through which I once journeyed. It was to be a map not only of broken streets, menacing alleys, concrete-surfaced backyards, neighborhood schools and stores . . . a map not only of the physical elements of my early life, but of the spiritual ones as well." Chaim Potok , "The Invisible Map of Meaning: A Writer's Confrontation," Triquarterly, Spring 1992) Born and raised among the Hasidic Jews of New York, Chaim Potok transports us to a world completely strange, yet strangely familiar. The Chosen is the story of two young men who form a friendship that changes both their lives. Reuven, an orthodox Jew, and Danny, a Hasidic Jew, struggle to understand each other, though to the outside world they are simply both Jews. Through their relationship Potok teaches us about Hasidism, the ultra-conservative sect that originated in Poland in response to the persecutions suffered by Jews hundreds of years ago. Each group of Hasidic Jews is led by a Tzaddik; a mystical leader who is rabbi, prophet and even a Messianic figure to his followers. They dwell in a world closed even to other Jews, and as Reuven enters this world through his friendship with Danny, we have the rare opportunity to experience a fascinating culture within a culture.

As the semester progressed, the seminar evolved from its initial lecture format into an interaction between the students, Potok, and the texts. We focused on passages read aloud, discussing them in depth, just as seminary students might approach the Talmud under the guidance of a meticulous rabbi.
