    INTRODUCTION
Potok is a Judaic scholar and ordained rabbi whose fiction consistently addresses important issues concerning Jewish religion and culture in contemporary American society. His best-selling novel, The Chosen (1967), and its sequel, The Promise (1969), won critical praise and a large popular audience. While most of his novels are steeped in Jewish theology, philosophy, and politics, his perceptive treatment of adolescent initiation, community dynamics, and intergenerational conflict transcend their settings to offer striking insight into the modern individual's search for spiritual meaning. Along with My Name Is Asher Lev (1972), the sequel

A work of non-fiction is not as difficult to write as a work of fiction, but it's not as satisfying in the end. Chaim Potok All of us grow up in particular realities - a home, family, a clan, a small town, a neighborhood. Depending upon how we're brought up, we are either deeply aware of the particular reading of reality into which we are born, or we are peripherally aware of it. Don and Chaim also discuss the anonymity and the ethnic groups of New York City, the city where Chaim was raised, educated and lived for many years. The Chosen is about an American traveling to Korea. These stories are pulled from his own experiences living in the region. The Book of Lights is a sort of sequel by demonstrating conflicts between the two cultures. The book was considered a seminal work, which opened up the closed world of Orthodox Judaism to a wide audience. The Chosen was turned into a Hollywood film in 1981, and was followed by a sequel, The Promise, in 1969. with Mike Field Born in the Bronx to Polish immigrants just monthsbefore the start of the Great Depression, Chaim Potok grew upin an Orthodox Jewish home where his businessman father, "agreat admirer of the capitalist system," discouraged hisson's early aptitude for painting in favor of a morepractical occupation. Potok received rabbinic ordination in1954 and a doctorate in Western philosophy in 1965, but, other than a two-year stint as a chaplain on the front linesin Korea, he chose not to make religion his avocation. Instead, he turned his talents to writing. In 1967 hepublished The Chosen, a novel that examined value systems inconflict and won Potok a worldwide audience. Seven othermajor novels have followed, including The Promise and My NameIs Asher Lev. This fall, Potok joined the Writing Seminars program asa visiting professor, where he teaches an undergraduatecourse in fiction writing. Reading the Novel as a Work of Postmodern Fiction
    Jessica Workman Jan 11, 2008
Chaim Potok's award winning bestseller, My Name is Asher Lev, captures the heart of readers and stands as a great work of postmodern fiction.
    The Author
Chaim Potok, an orthodox Jew, grew up wanting to become an artist. His family called it foolishness so he gave it up in favor of literature. While his parents were more supportive of literature, they wanted him to pursue an education for something useful that would make him a rich man. After graduating from the Seminary he decided not to join the church but to write and teach instead.
    The Plot
Asher Lev, born a Hasidic Jew, is forced to choose between the traditions of his people, which have been practiced for generations, and his undying and often compulsive obsession with drawing the world as he sees it. In art, he is a child prodigy. As a son, he is a failure.

"Writing at its best is an exalted state, an unlocking of the unconscious and imagination and a contact with sanctity."
One of America's most popular Jewish writers, Chaim Potok (b. 1929) is the author of such novels as The Chosen The Promise The Book of Lights (1981), and Davita's Harp (1985). Each of his novels explores the tension between tradition and modernity, and the clash between Jewish culture and contemporary Western civilization, which he calls "core-to-core culture confrontation." Although primarily known as a novelist, Potok is an ordained Conservative rabbi and a world-class Judaic scholar who has also published children's books, theological discourses, biographies, and histories. Conversations with Chaim Potok presents interviews ranging from 1976 to 1999. Potok discusses the broad range of his writing and the deep influence of non-Jewish novels-in particular, Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited and James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man -on his work. Interviews bear witness to Potok's many other influences-Orthodox Jewish doctrine, Freudian psychoanalytical theory, Picasso's Guernica, and Jewish kabbalah mysticism.
