Homo superior is the sole survivor of a nuclear holocaust. The first part of the novel concerns the efforts of a brilliant eleven-year-old girl to find others of her kind, and her struggles to defend her virginity from the males she meets. The second part depicts the effort to defuse a Russian doomsday device left in orbit. Most of the novel is narrated by the heroine, supposedly from her shorthand notes (the author is a court reporter), and the style is unpleasantly telegraphic. She is reminiscent of a typically insufferable Heinlein omnicompetent optimistic superhuman. Compare with Henry Kuttner, Mutant . The possibility of nuclear winter is touched on.

LOOKING BACK, IT'S CLEAR I was the only one, thanks to years of research into obscure myths and folklore, who could have saved poor Rick Meech, my friend and neighbor. All the clues were there, but my mind was not receptive, a great irony, since it was clearly a perfect receiver for them. It's as if an experienced dermatologist, talking to a friend, didn't notice a giant multicolored melanoma in the middle of his forehead. He mentioned, quite emphatically, finding a strange object, apparently an egg, but without the typical ovoid...

The Moon in Science Fiction Mankind's dreams of space exploration focused first on our closest celestial neighbor, the Moon. Jules Verne and H.G. Wells both wrote classic stories on such travels. The following is a bibliography of science fiction (and some fantasy) novels and short stories in which Earth's satellite has a major or at least significant role. Some of the citations are incomplete, but this will be remedied as time permits. I have had a great deal of help with this bibliography. First a heartfelt thanks to subscribers of SF-Lovers and to the many visitors to this site for their comments and suggestions. And a note of special appreciation to Spike MacPhee someone whose extensive knowledge of the SF genre has been of incalculable value in compiling this work. The Moon in Science Fiction is a dynamic list of sources that will continue to grow. I invite comments, corrections and additions. Look for to find recent publications or items which have been recently added or updated. Titles that are highlighted will take you to Amazon.com

Palmer, Stephen (stephenpalmer.net)
"This is the website of British SF author Stephen Palmer, including extracts from his novels, graphics, news, and more! (Including music.)" The entry page is all graphic images, so if you don't have graphics enabled you'll do a certain amount of blind jumping. The first few items are sample chapters and book reviews. There's some interesting stuff here if you go exploring, for example the 6th link (from the main page) takes you to "The Naming of Things: ".. You can hang alot of baggage on a name. A character called, say, Gothmorrog is likely to be a bit of a baddie, whereas Melliandra is more likely to be a sympathetic, 'goodie' sort of a character. Also, following many traditions, names ending in -a tend to belong to women. This is a tradition that is fun to subvert..." (Stephen Palmer) [Updated Oct 2001]

you've managed to stumble upon a strange collaborative criticism blog, which is a piece of the s1ngularity ezine. this is an experiment. do not be afraid.
The Efficacy of Efficiency, Puzzles and Porges (in and elsewhere) It struck me belatedly as I entered into this small project (well, it was small before it ballooned larger than I meant it to) that some might ask: “What’s this guy’s deal with old guys who never won awards? Nobody else looks at them. Why doesn’t he analyze the young turks like everybody else?”
I suppose it is because everyone else is analyzing the young turks, for one thing. For another, it’s easier to analyze a writer’s career from the retrospective standpoint20/20 and all that. Also, I tend to ask myself and others, “Where are you going and where have you been?” This is a famous Joyce Carol Oates story, of course, but it is also the question the angel asked the fleeing surrogate mother. And a potent one, for how can we know where we’re going if we don’t know where we’ve been (or why we’ve been where we’ve been)?
Finally, each of these pioneers has carved a path that’s worth observing. I fear present literature is gazing too steadily at its feet, circling the same old oak tree. And Porges (I keep wanting to call him Borges with a ‘p’) does have something to say to the present.
