The copy of the bull, or donation, by the authority whereof Pope Alexander, the sixth of that name, gave and granted to the kings of Castile and their successors the regions and lands found in the west ocean sea by the navigations of the Spanish. Alexander, bishop, the servant of the servants of God: To our most dearly beloved son in Christ, King Ferdinand, and to our dearly beloved daughter in Christ, Elizabeth, Queen of Castile, Leon, Aragon, Sicily, and Granada, most noble princes, greeting and apostolic benediction. We are credibly informed that, whereas of late you were determined to seek and find certain islands and firm lands far remote and unknown (and not heretofore found by any other), to the intent to bring the inhabitants of the same to honor our Redeemer and to profess the Catholic faith, you have hitherto been much occupied in the expugnation and recovery of the kingdom of Granada, by reason whereof you could not bring your said laudable purpose to the end desired. Nevertheless, as it hath pleased Almighty God, the aforesaid kingdom being recovered, willing to accomplish your said desire, you have, not without great labor, perils, and charges, appointed our well-beloved son Christopher Columbus (a man very well commended as most worthy and apt for so great a matter), well furnished with men and ships and other necessaries, to seek (by the sea where hitherto no man hath sailed), such firm lands and islands far remote and hitherto unknown.

Rodrigo
Around the time that Cardinal Rodrigo took up with Vannozza de Cattani, the mother of four of his seven children, including Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia, who are infamous in their own right, he was appointed Cardinal-Bishop of Albano. In 1476 - a year after Cesare was born - Rodrigo became Cardinal-Bishop of Porto and Dean of the Sacred College. Throughout this entire time, he retained the vice-chancellor position and appears to have done well in that post. The pope was also busy arranging a marriage for his daughter, Lucrezia. Previously, he had considered wedding her to two young noblemen; but, as his stature rose, so did his desire for a more advantageous match. Throughout his life he would arrange no less than three marriages for Lucrezia. The first of these was to Giovanni Sforza, nephew of the Duke of Milan. This took place in 1493. Pope Alexander VI
Alexander wanted to keep Italy safe from French invasions. In 1494 Charles VIII of France did invade and staked his claim on the kingdom of Naples. Charles begged the pope to interceded and support his claim. He did not; and, with an alliance that united the rulers of Milan, Venice and the Holy Roman Emperor, Alexander was able to drive Charles out of Italy.

THIRD LATERAN COUNCIL (1179) Canons Introduction We do not have the same reasons for doubting the ecumenical nature of this council as we have for Lateran I and II. For, the way in which the council was summoned and conducted by the pope, and the number of fathers who gathered from the whole Latin world and devoted their efforts to strengthening the unity of the church and condemning heretics, resemble rather the ancient councils than Lateran I and II and exemplify the typical council of the Middle Ages presided over by the Roman pontiff. For this reason it is not surprising that chronicles of the period frequently refer to this council as Lateran I. The canons of this council played a notable part in the future government of the church. They were frequently included in the collections of decretals compiled in the late 12th and early 13th century, and afterwards all were inserted into Pope Gregory IX's Decretals. Walter Holtzmann and other scholars considered that these decretal collections in fact arose from this Lateran council and its canons. Certainly the canons, unlike those of Lateran I and II and many preceding councils, appear to have been worked out by an excellent legal mind so that it is probable they were composed under the authority of Alexander III himself, who was an expert lawyer. The canons, except for those which refer to Lateran II or the council of Rheims in 1148 (see canons 2, 11, 20-22) or to Gratian's Decrees (see canons 1-4, 7, 11, 13-14, 17-18), are new and original.

The Struggle Between Frederick Barbarossa and Alexander III
(Doeberl iv. pp. 165-247.)
[Henderson p 357-59, slightly altered
Alexander was chosen pope by a majority of cardinals, but his rival, Victor, besides a strong minority, had the people of Rome - whose vote they claimed, was still necessary to the election - on his side; Victor also enjoyed the priority of consecration. The Synod of Pavia [ Doc A ] declared for Victor, and Frederick openly ranged himself upon his side. England and France, however, after much vacillation, took the part of Alexander - who, indeed, for years was forced to fight an uphill fight. On Victor's death (1164) his party elected Paschal, and as the latter's successor Calixtus. In 1165 Frederick and a number of nobles took a solemn oath at Wurzberg never to acknowledge Roland, or a pope elected by his party. Alexander found at last, in the Lombard cities and in the king of Sicily, the allies hie most needed. After years of stern fighting with the Lombard League fortune turned against the emperor, and he was obliged to flee from Italy to save his life. It was six years before he was able to raise and army and return. He was preparing to strick a final blow for his prestige in Italy when he was deserted by his powerful vassal, Henry the Lion. The Battle of Legano, fought in 1176, proved a great defeat and paved the way for the peace of Venice [

A diplomatic campaign ensued in which Alexander and Victor wooed the other European monarchs. In October, 1160 King Henry II of England, Louis VII of France, together with bishops from England, France, and Spain, met at Beauvais. The assembly gave its allegiance to Alexander. Frederick continued to support Victor. Because of imperial strength in Italy and the long duration of the schism, Alexander was forced to reside outside of Rome for a large part of his pontificate. The schism persisted for eighteen years, but it would be the last until the Great Schism of 1378. Frederick’s successors, especially Frederick II, used other means to oppose papal authority.
Alexander’s inability to control Rome and the Papal States was due to his conflict with Frederick. Although he attempted to support the cities of Lombardy, he had neither the power nor the resources to render effective assistance. Frederick and his popes ruled central and Northern Italy. From 1164, the Lombard League resisted imperial ambitions with greater and greater success. Finally in May, 1176, Frederick’s army was decisively defeated at the battle of Legnano, and the emperor was forced to conclude a peace with the league and the pope. Alexander and Frederick met in Venice in July, 1177. They concluded a treaty on 1 August, 1177 in which the emperor recognized Alexander as pope and Frederick’s excommunication was raised. Schismatic bishops and cardinals were pardoned. Even the anti-pope Callixtus III was eventually appointed by Alexander to the governorship of Benevento in 1178. Obduracy was not part of Alexander’s makeup.

A pupil of Alessandro Algardi, Caffa was one of the principal sculptors in Rome in the generation after him. His bust of Pope Alexander VII displays a new attitude to portraiture in which psychological penetration plays a role. The image confers an air of sober concern on the pontiff, who is remembered, among other things, for commissioning Bernini to design the colonnades of St. Peter's Square and for receiving the visit of Queen Christina of Sweden, a recent convert to Catholicism.

Lucrezia Borgia: Poison Beauty, Daughter of Pope Alexander VI
The name Lucrezia Borgia is synonymous with poison and incest. Her life really was as twisted as a John Waters movie. The daughter of Pope Alexander VI and born to a life of Italian politics, were no allegation or slander was deemed too vicious, Lucrezia proved to be well suited for the life.
According to the reports of the time the Borgia family held the secret to catarella, a deadly slow poison, which they used to strangle Rome into submission. Three Musketeers author, Alexander Dumas, even made claims that they made the poison by feeding a bear arsenic, waiting until it vomited, then suspending the bear upside down and collecting the foam. While it seems unlikely that this was the true process, it is hard to conceive that the procedure could have been performed secretly at the Vatican, it is reflective of the times that it is hard to separate fact from outrageous exaggeration.
The same year that Christopher Columbus sailed for America, 1492, Lucrezia's father Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia was chosen as Pope and he took the title of Alexander VI. He was sixty and a Spainard with a taste for the finer things and an efficient administrator. He was also quite amorous which is why he had a number of children.
When Rodrigo became Pope his children gained prominence. Negotiations began for arranged marriages with both Lucrezia, who was twelve, and her brother Jofre, who was eleven. Lucrezia was a beautiful delicate girl with rich blond

    SIX MOUNTAINS AND A STAR
(decoration of one of the entrances of the Pope's palace at Castelgandolfo

A lexander VII - F abio C higi Cardinal Fabio Chigi chose the name of Alexander VII in memory of Pope Alexander III who had fought Emperor Frederick I to preserve the independence of the Church. Alexander had become a most unsuitable name after Alexander VI Borgia. Nevertheless when in St Peter's Square one sees the name of Alexander VII repeated so many times and the six (remaining) coats of arms, no doubt the idea that Alexander the Great was the reference for Fabio Chigi when he named himself Alexander, comes to mind.
Alexander VII was a man very interested in the arts and he personally reviewed with Bernini the possible solutions for the square which was to complete St Peter's.
His coat of arms is everywhere in Rome, not only on buildings he erected, but also on many he just slightly restored. Alexander VII feared that his formal coat of arms might not survive the many hazards of history and he had artists develop decorations with its themes in the belief that art would always be respected.
This page is dedicated to this aspect. Of the two elements of his coat of arms he thought the six mountains with the star would better represent him, as the oak was already associated with
