During a wet summer in 1816 at the Villa Diodati near Lake Geneva, four friends were engaged in a literary tournament to write a ghost story that would scare the wits out of them. Reading a German book of ghost stories became tedious, so why not write their own, suggested one? Only two would finish. One would be remembered for eternity, and the other would have notoriety as an attack of vengeance against a friend. Tale of the Tape The four friends each had an inkling of who would win the title of 'Scariest Ghost Story Author', with two stern favourites in the race and two underdogs, or 'dark horses,' hiding in the background. Though they all came to Diodati evenly-matched in dangerous rumours and things that they had to get away from in England, would it be jumping to conclusions as to who would win? English Romantic writers saw themselves as visionaries with the ability to look beyond the ordinary in life and contemplate man's ultimate fate in an uncertain world. William Blake, William Wordsworth, and Percy Bysshe Shelley asserted their belief in the innate goodness of man and his future promise. Other writers of the period were less optimistic. Lord Byron and Mary Shelley, for example, questioned the likelihood of redemption through a spiritual union of the human consciousness with the supernatural. Se olvida así que el desdichado Polidori, junto con Mary, fue el ganador de aquel duelo de ingenio propuesto por Byron la noche del 16 de junio de 1816 en Villa Diodati. Fue entonces cuando "el pobre Polidori", tal describe Mary al doctor en base a sus inquietudes literarias, alumbró "El vampiro", relato muy superior al "Drácula" de Stoker, que sentaría las bases de cuantos chupasangres le han sucedido en las más bellas páginas de la literatura fantástica. Nacido en 1795 en Londres, John William Polidori era hijo de un emigrante toscano -Gaetano Polidori- que en tiempos fuera secretario del poeta Vittorio Alfieri. Recuerda Roberto Cueto en su introducción a "Ernestus Berchtold o el moderno Edipo" (Celeste Ediciones, 1999) que las inquietudes del pequeño John oscilaron desde sus primeros días entre el humanismo y la ciencia. Alternancia esta que ya registramos en su abuelo, también médico, que escribiría un tratado de osteología en verso. Galeno precoz, se licenció con tan sólo 19 años, doctorándose doce meses después con una tesis sobre el sonambulismo, tema que no deja de ser revelador respecto a sus inquietudes literarias.

In recent years, the inscription of sexual rhetoric in both texts has attracted further critical attention. Featuring men who traverse the explosively tense line between compulsory homosocial relations and the culturally prohibited horrors of homoerotic desire, these texts can certainly be read in the light of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s identification of the homophobic “paranoid gothic.” However, considered together, The Vampyre and the “Fragment” reveal more than anxieties about male bonding.
