John William Polidori
John William Polidori (7 September -24 August ) was the son of Gaetano Polidori, a Tuscan man of letters and at one point secretary to the dramatist Vittorio Alfieri , who had emigrated to England where he married a Miss Pierce and settled in London as a teacher of Italian. John was educated at Ampleforth, Yorkshire a Roman Catholic school and subsequently matriculated at the University of Edinburgh , where he studied medicine, writing a dissertation Dissertatio medica inauguralis, quaedam de morbo, oneirodynia dicto, complectens . .. on the highly romantic subject of sleep-walking and receiving his medical degree at the remarkably young age of 19. The next year, still not yet legally an adult, he accompanied Lord Byron on his excursion to Geneva . That Byron quickly tired of his protege's immaturity is well known, but Polidori was, indeed, quite young and inexperienced to be in such company. Polidori left Switzerland for Italy in September , where he traveled for nearly a year, returning to England the following spring, at which point he sought to practice medicine in Norwich. But he was unhappy in his profession and thought, instead, of turning to law. In the meantime, perhaps as his own response to the heady literary summer he had passed on the continent, he began a short, but productive literary career. His first work was an extension of his interest in psychology

It has taken nearly 179 years but finally the mortal world is beginning to acknowledge the vision of Dr John Polidori, with a plaque now honouring him at his birthplace in Great Pulteney Street, London. Bloodstone delves a little deeper into his short life, his passion for Byron and the undeath of his most infamous creation, Lord Ruthven. Truly a vampire who is... mad, bad and dangerous to know!
John Polidori was born on September 7th 1795 in London, the son of the former secretary to the poet/dramatist Alfieri. Polidori junior studied medicine and by the age of 20 had become personal physician and travelling companion to Lord Byron, on the suggestion of a mutual friend. Initially the two got on well but the ghost story competition and Polidori's success there must have angered and frustrated Byron and their friendship gave way under the pressure. Polidori was dismissed in September and returned to England, where he practiced medicine once more, began studying for the Bar, and fairly soon afterwards died. The truth about his death may perhaps never be known.
After his death, the journal covering the period in Switzerland was published by one of his nephews, William Michael Rossetti. It is from this initial report that we gain our truest picture of the relationship between Byron and his physician.

  • John William Polidori 1795-1821
English novelist, dramatist, poet, and diarist.
    INTRODUCTION
Author of The Vampyre (1819), the first published vampire novel in English, Polidori is best remembered for his association with more famous literary figures, including Lord Byron and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. The Vampyre was initially misattributed to Byron; although Polidori borrowed some plot elements from an abandoned narrative fragment by Byron, his novel is an original composition, establishing many of the literary conventions of the vampire theme that were followed by subsequent nineteenth-century authors, including Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and Bram Stoker.

    John William Polidori (1795-1821)
    Biographical note
Author of Vampyre , possibly the first work of the vampire genre of fantasy fiction. Polidori went in 1810 to Edinburgh University, where he received his degree as a doctor of medicine on August 1, 1815 at the age of 19. In 1816 he entered Lord Byron's service as his personal physician. In 1816, Doctor Polidori accompanied Byron on a trip through Europe. In Geneva, Switzerland, the pair met with Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley , and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, and their companion Clair Clairmont. One night in June, after the company had read aloud from a collection of horror tales, Byron suggested that they each write a ghost story. Mary Shelley worked on a tale that would later evolve into Frankenstein . Byron wrote (and quickly abandoned) a fragment of a story, which Polidori used later as inspiration for his own tale. Rather than use the crude, bestial vampire of folklore as a basis for his story, Polidori based his character on Byron. Polidori named the character "Lord Ruthven" as a joke. The name was originally used in Lady Caroline Lamb's novel Glenarvon, in which a thinly-disguised Byron figure was also named Lord Ruthven. Polidori's Lord Ruthven was not only the first vampire in English fiction, but was the first fictional vampire in the form we recognize today - an aristocratic fiend who preyed among high society. Polidori's story
