The Bronx County Historical Society provides a great field trip for families, group members or students with exciting visits to The Museum of Bronx History and the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, theme programs, neighborhood walking tours, and school projects. The Museum is in the 1758 Valentine-Varian House , a part of Revolutionary War history. The beautiful fieldstone home was built by Isaac Valentine in a symmetrical style called Georgian Vernacular. Today the structure is the home of the Museum of Bronx History. The front parlor features a display about the development of the area, while two other rooms contain changing exhibitions. Everyday mid-18th century life is recalled through a variety of artifacts. Plantings, an herb garden, and the Bronx River Soldier monument can also be seen. The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage was his final residence in 1849. In this farmhouse, after losing his wife, Virginia, to tuberculosis, Poe wrote Annabel Lee, Ulalume, The Bells, and Eureka, some of his best known works. Refurbished and restored, the Cottage looks as it did when Poe lived here down to the colors of the walls. The sparsely furnished main floor includes, among other items, a 19th-century cast-iron stove, a rocking chair, a desk, and other furnishings that may have been used by Poe. A narrow staircase leads to the couple's bedroom, whose ceiling is barely six feet high. In the house the life of Edgar Allan Poe in Fordham is brought to life through a house tour that is complemented by an award winning audio-visual show.

Edgar Allan Poe Cottage
Edgar Allan Poe spent the last years of his life, from 1846 to 1849, in The Bronx at Poe Cottage, now located at Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse. A small wooden farmhouse built about 1812, the cottage once commanded unobstructed vistas over the rolling Bronx hills to the shores of Long Island. It was a bucolic setting in which the great writer penned many of his most enduring poetical works, including “Annabel Lee,” “The Bells” and “Eureka.” Poe spent much of his life moving from place to place in restless search of literary recognition and financial security. In April 1844, he and his wife, Virginia, and mother-in-law, Maria Clemm, moved to New York, where Poe sought the opportunity for international acclaim. But Virginia was ill, and in early summer of 1846 Poe brought her to The Bronx, where he hoped the country air would rescue her failing health. However, in January of 1847, she died of tuberculosis. Poe himself died two years later in Baltimore, while he was returning home from a successful lecture tour. Administered by The Bronx County Historical Society since 1975, the cottage is restored to its original appearance, with authentic period furnishings. A film presentation and guided tour help bring Poe Cottage to life. Visitors can see the bed in which Virginia died and the rocking chair Poe used. In the kitchen, the dishes on the table appear as if the great author had just stepped out for air.

A brief snapshot biography of the life and works of American Author Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe is one of America's most famous authors. A native son of Boston, Massachusetts born in 1809, Poe spent much of his life in Richmond, Virginia. After the death of his mother, Poe moved to Richmond initially to be raised by John Allan, of Ellis and Allan Tobacco Merchants. Poe had a brief stay at the University of Virginia before a combination of financial difficulty and a row with John Allan prevented him from returning to school. Shortly thereafter he published a small volume of poetry in Boston (this was Tamarlane and Other Poems One little known fact about Poe's life was his two-year stint in the United States Army. It is hard to picture the king of dark romanticism in uniform. Following his time in the Army, a short stay in Maryland and beginning a teaching position at West Point, Poe wrote his second book of poetry.

An Outline of American Literature

The Romantic Period, 1820-1860: Fiction: Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)
Index Edgar Allan Poe, a southerner, shares with Melville a darkly metaphysical vision mixed with elements of realism, parody, and burlesque. He refined the short story genre and invented detective fiction. Many of his stories prefigure the genres of science fiction, horror, and fantasy so popular today. Poe's short and tragic life was plagued with insecurity. Like so many other major 19th-century American writers, Poe was orphaned at an early age. Poe's strange marriage in 1835 to his first cousin Virginia Clemm, who was not yet 14, has been interpreted as an attempt to find the stable family life he lacked. Poe's verse, like that of many Southerners, was very musical and strictly metrical. His best-known poem, in his own lifetime and today, is "The Raven" (1845). In this eerie poem, the haunted, sleepless narrator, who has been reading and mourning the death of his "lost Lenore" at midnight, is visited by a raven (a bird that eats dead flesh, hence a symbol of death) who perches above his door and ominously repeats the poem's famous refrain, "nevermore." The poem ends in a frozen scene of death-in-life: And the Raven, never flitting, still
