May 5, 2003: Hi Al, I noticed that your post looking for information on some of the old families of the Maniwaki, Gracefied Kazabazua Michael Plunkett who was a wheelwright from Co. Louth . He came over to work on the Col. By canal. He settled in Farrelton on what is now Plunkett road. The church the Plunkett's have been members of since it was built is the Farellton church, they helped build it in fact. I'm also connected by blood to the McCambley from Venosta, the Hendrick , the Haveron the Mulvoon, the Hogan, and the O'Connor families from this area. I don't know much about them, but I could ask my grandmother (a McCambley) The McCaffreys were here a little later than the Plunketts I think maybe the late 19th century. Abe Plunkett-Latimer Hi Abe: Here's an early birth, recorded at Notre Dame (Sussex Street in Bytown): 7 May 1832 Baptism of Mary, born this day, daughter to Michael Plunkett and Bridget O'Reilly Witnesses: Michael Lawlor and Mrs. Grant M. Lalor, Priest ... Al (Source: Ellen Paul 's records of Notre Dame) August 27, 2003: Hi there, I was just surfing on the net and I came across a note from Abe-Plunkett-Latimer that his/her grandmother was a McCaffery from Low or Venosta. My grandmother was Jane McCaffery from that area as well. I wonder is there some connection. She married Phil Covey /Colby frrom that area somewhere, I believe he was born in Northern Ireland. I am searching for his father Mathew Covey (Colby) Do you have any info on this. Barbara Hawes (Colby) rhawes1397@rogers.com

All In The Blood,
This is a remarkable book, full of colour and incident, a memoir of a chaotic well-to-do household presided over by the formidable erratic character that was Ma, otherwise known as Countess Plunkett, a living terror. The children of the family who grew into active nationalists, also became living terrors in the eyes of the British establishment.
The last time Geraldine Plunkett Dillon, mother of novelist Eilis Dillon, saw her brother Joe was when he placed a bomb in a tram and fired his Mauser pistol into it to blow it up. Geraldine was on the first day of her honeymoon.
She had married UCD chemistry lecturer Thomas Dillon on Easter Sunday 1916.
The couple were in the Imperial Hotel right across from the GPO when, the next day, Pearse read the Proclamation of the Republic. This had been signed by Geraldine’s brother, Joe (Joseph Mary Plunkett), who in his new volunteer uniform was a player in the scene unfolding before the couple’s eyes.
Tubercular and sickly for much of his life, Joe had already set the seal on his own death warrant as he went about his business in Sackville Street.

47. Kilmainhaim Jail
There is an interesting story about joseph mary plunkett and his wife Grace. They had been intending to be married on Easter Sunday before the rebellion,

Kilmainhaim Jail Kilmainhaim Jail saw many prisoners in the length of time that it functioned as an actual jail, which includes the rebels from the Easter 1916 rising. The leaders of the rising were executed in the courtyard shortly after the rebellion. These next two pictures are a memorial for the rebels executed at Kilmainhaim after the rising. It is located in one of the courtyards. This was graffitied at the end of the hallway. It reads "Beware of the Risen People, that have harried and held. Ye that have bullied and bribed." Here is a picture of a regular cell in Kilmainhaim. Underneath this sign is the cell where Joseph Mary Plunkett awaited his execution. Underneath this sign is the cell that Joseph Plunkett's wife was held in. Mrs. Plunkett was a very talented painter, and when she was held in Kilmainhaim, she smuggled some paints in and created this picture of the virgin Mary and baby Jesus. There is an interesting story about Joseph Mary Plunkett and his wife Grace. They had been intending to be married on Easter Sunday before the rebellion, but, because of the notice MacNeill issued in the paper, Joseph was tied up all morning trying to straighten the matter out. He promised Grace that if he were arrested they would be married in prison . Joseph was taken when the rebels surrendered and sent to Richmond Barracks. He corresponded with Grace, and was able to set up the marriage. They were married on the night of May 3rd in Kilmainhaim, where Joseph was transferred earlier that day. This is the jail chapel where they were married.

Grace
Last time I posted , I linked to the song Grace . This is a song we first heard in Ireland when my oldest sons were 2 years old and 6 weeks old. We loved the song for its theme of fidelity and love but couldn't track it down anywhere until we acquired an Irish Tenor CD around the time Aidan was born.
The story behind the song is a true story and very romantic. It is written about the last night of Joseph Mary Plunkett , an Irish revolutionary, Catholic scholar and poet who was executed for his part in the Easter Uprising in 1916.
As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Jaill
I think about these past few weeks, oh will they say we've failed?
Joseph Mary Plunkett, 28 years old, wed his fiancee (a convert to Catholicism) Grace Gifford just hours before his execution by firing squad. Grace's brother in law, married to her sister Muriel, also a convert to Catholicism, was also executed for his part in the uprising.
I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go
