~S TANLEY P LUMLY
"T HE M ORNING A MERICA C HANGED
Happened in the afternoon at Villa Serbelloni.
We’d closed up shop on the work for the day
and decided to make the long descent down
the elegant stone switchback path into Bellagio
for coffee and biscotti. It was still Tuesday
and a quarter to three and a good quarter hour to the exit gate or if you stopped to look at the snow on the Alps or at "the deepest lake in all of Italy" or looked both ways at once—as we say crossing a street—five, ten minutes longer. This day was longer because it was especially, if redundantly, beautiful, with the snow shining and the lake shining and the big white boats shining with tourists from Tremezzo and Varenna. And the herring gulls and swallows at different layers, shining like mica in the mountain rock. And the terra cotta tiles of the village roofs almost shining, almost close enough to touch. Judith was already in the pasticceria and I was looking skyward on Via Garibaldi, the one-way traffic lane circling the town

Old Heart: Poems by Stanley Plumly
While it may be hard to imagine the typical poetry reader, I suspect many enjoy finding a story within the poem. I do. Having a narrative somehow anchors the ideas espoused by the poet. For this reason, I like many of the pieces by Stanley Plumly in his National Book Award nominated collection Old Heart
The stories may be sketchy, episodic, brief, but there is a person or object, a scene, and an action. In "When He Fell Backwards into His Coffin" on page 50, Plumly tells of a man who died in the bathtub. Many people want the story to be happy and imagine that the man was enjoying a nice bath while listening to opera. Plumly reveals that the man was actually just sitting on the edge fully dressed when he had his final moment of thought. The truly shocking part of the poem is the last thought. The man remembers his mother holding his head down in the water.
"Debt" on pages 34-35 is a bit of memoir. He remembers three creditors standing in the yard with his father on a cold, blustery day, discussing the resolution of a debt. One man is measuring the yard in a threatening way. Plumly links the image to thoughts about debt and poverty from the poets Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, and T. S. Eliot. He leaves us a mystery: did the family lose the house?

Woman on Twenty-Second Eating Berries
She's not angry exactly but all business,
eating them right off the tree, with confidence,
the kind that lets her spit out the bad ones
clear of the sidewalk into the street. It's
sunny, though who can tell what she's tasting,
rowan or one of the serviceberries -
the animal at work, so everybody,
save the traffic, keeps a distance. She's picking clean what the birds have left, and even, in her hurry, a few dark leaves. In the air the dusting of exhaust that still turns pennies green, the way the cloudy surfaces of things obscure their differences, like the mock orange or the apple rose that cracks the paving stone, rooted in the plaza.

Mercy Silent Heart Attack by Stanley Plumly Hear the author read this poem (in RealAudio When silence is another kind of violence. Like all the breath you've ever breathed suddenly swallowed. But since it happened over days, each night a little worse, it lacked the drama of my father's death. He went down, like a building, on his knees. I sat in the dark inside the feeling I was turning into stone, or, if I turned around, to salt, salt-crystals diamonding the blackouts. Silence is what you hear, the mouth a moon of O s, black filling up the body with its blood. I listened. Each night, all night, my father louder. What do you think?
