Jump to: navigation search Stanley Plumly is an American poet, who is professor of English and co-director of University of Maryland, College Park 's creative writing program. The following two passages are extracted from The Longman Anthology of American Poetry (Page 431, ISBN 0801300460 "This poet hymns unlikely things, finding beauty and grace where they were overlooked, so that a frightful contraption like an iron lung can become a miraculous vehicle for ' out-of-the-body travel ', the major metaphor as well as the tile ot Plumly's finest collection (1977). In the same way, wildflowers we may have scarely noticed, like meadow-rue and peppergrass, are shown to have the same kind of unlikely and stirring beauty. Stirring, perhaps, because unlikely, rescued from a modest oblivion to enhance our sense of life. Stanley Plumly grew up in Ohio and Virginia and was educated at Wilmington College in Ohio and at Ohio University. He taught for a number of years at Ohio University, where he helped found the Ohio Review, and he has been a visiting writer at a number of other institutions, including Iowa, Princeton, Columbia, and the University of Washington. At present, he teaches in the writing program at the University of Maryland."

A Conversation with Stanley Plumly
Lisa Meyer S tanley Plumly was born in Barnesville, Ohio in 1939, and grew up in the lumber and farming regions of Virginia and Ohio. He is the author of five books of poetry. His first collection, In the Outer Dark , received the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award; his third, Out-of-the-Body Travel , was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Other titles are Giraffe Summer Celestial , and Boy on the Step Having taught at over a dozen universities across America, currently Plumly is a member of the faculty at the Department of English at the University of Maryland. His sixth collection of poems, The Marriage In The Trees , will be published by Ecco Press this September. Robert Penn Warren said of Plumly: "In poem after poem, I find a great and teasingly original satisfaction. The only way that comes into my mind to say it is that Plumly has established a new sort of ratio between the poet and his subject or even his poem. It's a new turn of mind, behind the turn of language, in haunting, visionary pieces." The March 1995 interview with Lisa Meyer that follows took place in the basement pub of the Nassau Inn, in Princeton, New Jersey.

Norton, 2007 Plumly's essay in The Kenyon Review Powells.com feature Buy the Book Stanley Plumly’s seventh collection of poetry, Old Heart , is the sort of meditative confrontation of mortality that only an older poet could write—particularly, in this case, an older poet who recently experienced a heart attack and who is currently finishing up a Keats biography. Hearts, in many forms, pop up throughout this collection, and while Keats himself is referenced directly, it is birds (often Keatsian stand-in-for-the-immortal-soul birds) that dominate the psychic landscapes. Overall, this collection of poetry is mellow and accomplished, measured and never showy. Birds abound in the pages of Old Heart . Even when a poem is not specifically about birds, a bird will creep in through some comparison. And when birds grow wearisome, he expands to include butterflies for good measure. Plumly is knowingly engaged in considering the bird both as a symbol freighted with great spiritual weight, appropriate to any book preoccupied with mortality, and as a straightforward element of the natural world. The butterfly and bird show up together in the poem “Nostalgia,” in which Plumly quotes Pound:

Chapter One
Woman on Twenty-Second Eating Berries
She's not angry exactly but all business, eating them right off the tree, with confidence, the kind that lets her spit out the bad ones clear of the sidewalk into the street. It's sunny, though who can tell what she's tasting, rowan or one of the serviceberries - the animal at work, so everybody, save the traffic, keeps a distance. She's picking clean what the birds have left, and even, in her hurry, a few dark leaves. In the air

17. APR Sept/Oct 2003 Vol. 32/No. 5 | Stanley Plumly
Stanley Plumly s Argument Song Sources Silences in Poetry, in which this essay appears, is to be published this November by Handsel Books/Other Press.
http://www.aprweb.org/issues/sept03/plumly.html
Stanley Plumly from Narrative Values, Lyric Imperatives The relationship of the needs of narrative meeting the needs of lyricismor at least the line break and the stanzais old hat, depending on how you frame the question. For the modernist it takes on subject status beginning with the Romantics, particularly the Preface to Lyrical Ballads. In making so much of the language of men and the rhythms of prose as the idioms of reality as opposed to the absolutist and moralistic mindsets of eighteenth-century diction, Wordsworth describes a separation between two kinds of language. "I have wished to keep the Reader in the company of flesh and blood," he says, "in a selection of language really used by men." (I think he means Dorothy, too.) It's not too long before this essentially Miltonic-blank-verse versus Popeian-verse-couplets argument sublimates into the now familiar and ongoing debate between new-age formalism and free verse: you hear it in Whitman's ars poeticas, Dickinson's letters, Eliot's English commentaries, Pound's ABC's, Williams's Paterson

For Jan Palach, a Name Drawn by Lot, on the Anniversary of His Death the Third Day after Attempted Self-Immolation in Protest of Communist Occupation
of Czechoslovakia, January 19, 1969
by Stanley Plumly I taught in your building once,
the one renamed for you
by the professors of philosophy,
a beautiful four-square block
of a building built to last centuries,
facing west into the hills backing
the great Vltava. Afternoons
in class, looking across the river
through the wall-high windows,
I could see the thousand-year-old crown of the Castle glittering, and at night, standing on the Charles, celestial above the city. From here, in the old ghetto, at the new century, it looked benign, like a blessing on your house and the half-dozen synagogues and dozen blocks of dwellings brought back to life after your cold war imitation of the bonze priests in Vietnam
