by 'Euterpe' Caesar Pliny the Elder Seneca the Younger Gaius Julius Caesar Ancient Rome is far from being forgotten by this world. You have probably heard of Gaius Julius Caesar, a famous person in the ancient world of the Romans. His death has become a famous Shakespearean play, but have you heard of his accomplishments?
Gaius Julius Caesar, commonly known as Julius Caesar, had many accomplishments as a military leader, politician, and dictator.
With the republic ended, Caesar was appointed dictator in 49 B.C. In 48 he was appointed dictator for two years, in 46 for 10 years, and then in 44 he was appointed for life. Unfortunately, Gaius Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44.
Gaius Julius Caesar, this name brings thoughts of good and bad into the minds of many. Was he a brilliant leader or an oppressive dictator? A statue of Julius Caesar now stands guard over the modern road; a laurel wreath is laid at its feet every year on the ides of March, the day of Caesar's assassination. Was he loved and great or not? Pliny the Elder Gaius Plinius Secundus, known as Pliny the elder, was born in Como, in the Po Valley, on the Italian-Swiss border in A.D. 23. Pliny led a well-rounded life and was known as an energetic, rigid, multi-talented man of letters, interested in military history, biology, geography, rhetoric, and oratory. When he was in teens he immigrated to Rome to study rhetoric. From A.D. 47-57 Pliny served as military cavalry prefect in Germany and practiced law before establishing a literary career. He was an expert on deployment of cavalry and became confidant and trusted advisor of emperors Vespasian and Titus.

(Full name Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus) Roman letter writer and orator.
    INTRODUCTION
Pliny the Younger, nephew of the great naturalist Pliny the Elder, was a Roman orator and administrator who is now chiefly remembered for his Epistulae Letters ], which offer a close look into public and private life during the height of the Roman Empire. Published between 100 and 109, the letters are preserved in ten volumes and include personal correspondence as well as Pliny's official communication with the Emperor Trajan from Bithinia. Also extant is Pliny's Panegyricus Trajani Panegyric to Trajan
    Biographical Information
Pliny was born in Como, Italy, around the year 61, to a rich landowning family. Tutored by Virginius Rufus, a general in the Roman army, after his father's death, Pliny was adopted by his uncle, Pliny the Elder, who brought him to Rome. There he studied under the Roman rhetorician Quintilian and the Greek rhetorician Nices Sacerdos. He began writing at the age of fourteen, mostly tragedies and poetry. After his uncle died in 79, Pliny began his legal career and entered the Senate soon thereafter. He advanced rapidly through the imperial civil and military service, largely due to his reputation as an honest and moderate man. He held the positions of priest in the cult of the Emperor, civil judge, military tribune in Syria, commander of a cavalry squadron, and urban

Russian River Pliny the Younger - April 2005
Love it or hate it, there's little doubt that the double India pale ale, also known as the I2PA or Imperial pale ale, is here to stay. Particularly on the west coast of the United States, the style is proliferating madly, with new examples appearing almost daily and at least one beer festival devoted to it. At their best, these ales are stunning combinations of big hops, big malt and big alcohol. At their worst, they are little more than seriously alcoholic hop juice. So what to make of a triple IPA? That's how Russian River Brewing's Vinny Cilurzo, the brewer widely credited with having invented the double IPA, is describing his new Pliny the Younger, a massive, 11% alcohol by volume powerhouse of a brew. Personally, I call it simply delicious. Few and far between are the ales which match the remarkable balance of the Younger, offspring of Cilurzo's double IPA, Pliny the Elder. Despite containing mountains of hops, the Younger is fruit-forward in body, with its robust bitterness only appearing in the second half and finish, and even then never quite dominating the taste. On the strength front, never mind its impressive potency, this ale drinks like a beer half to two-thirds its strength. And as for complexity, well, both Plinys have that in spades.

Is Jesus Mentioned by Pliny the Younger?
    Web www.juliantrubin.com
It is believed that Pliny the Younger (Caius Plinius Caecilius Secundus - c.61 AD - c.112 AD) mentioned Jesus Christ when he was Governor of Bithynia. His correspondence in 106 AD with the emperor Trajan included a report on proceedings against Christians. In an extended explanation to his supervisor, Pliny explained that he forced Christians to curse Christ, which a genuine Christian cannot be induced to do.
Is this a genuine reference, or are there doubts about its veracity? Although a few critics in the previous centuries claimed otherwise, there is really no doubt about the genuineness of this reference.

    To Cornelius Tacitus
You will certainly laugh, and well may you laugh, when I tell you that your old friend has turned sportsman, and has captured three magnificent boars. "What," you say, "Pliny?" Yes, I myself, though without giving up my much loved inactivity. While I sat at the nets, you might have found me holding, not a spear, but my pen. I was resolved, if I returned with my hands empty, at least to bring home my tablets full. This open-air way of studying is not at all to be despised. The activity and the scene stimulate the imagination; and there is something in the solemnity and solitude of the woods, and in the expectant silence of the chase, that greatly promotes meditation. I advise you whenever you hunt in future to take your tablets with you as well as your basket and flask. You will find that Minerva, as well as Diana, haunts these hills.
To Minucius Fundanus When I consider how the days pass with us at Rome, I am surprised to find that any single day taken by itself is spent reasonably enough, or at least seems to be so, and yet when I add up many days together the impression is quite otherwise. If you ask anyone what he has been doing to-day, he will tell you perhaps that he has been attending the ceremony of a youth's coming of age; he has assisted at a wedding, been present at the hearing of a lawsuit, witnessed a will, or taken part in a consultation. These occupations seem very necessary while one is engaged in them; and yet, looking back at leisure upon the many hours we have thus employed, we cannot but consider them mere frivolities. Looking back especially on town life from a country retreat, one is inclined to regret how much of life has been spent in these wretched trifles.

  • Trajan to Pliny: Reply 1. Pliny the Younger Pliny the Younger (Plinius Secundus) was governor of the Roman province of Bithynia, on the southern coast of the Black Sea, for approximately two years around 112 AD. An expert in law, finance and administration, he was recalled from retirement by the Emperor Trajan in order to resolve the political unrest and administrative disorder in the province. One of his longer letters to Trajan, who was also a friend of his, concerned Christians and how they were to be tried under Roman law. The Emperor Trajan wrote a letter in reply, and these, with many other letters, Pliny published. In his reply Trajan may be understood to be softening, without rescinding, the harsher stances of his immediate predecessors. Add a link 2 links in this section

Pliny the Younger was an author who attests, in a letter to the emperor Trajan about a grant of citizenship for a therapist named Harpocras, that citizenship was granted to some Egyptians, though far from open-handedly. He states in his letter that , since he was an Egyptian, Pliny should have obtained for him Alexandrian citizenship, then Roman. Since he didn't realize that there was a difference, he merely wrote to the emperor that Trajan was a freedman of an alien woman and that his patron had died. The Complete Letters of Pliny the Younger
Our book today is the Complete Letters of Pliny the Younger , this time in a new translation by P.G. Walsh. Walsh's translation is quite startlingly good - a marked improvement over even the best previous renditions - but there's only so much he can do with his author, because Pliny Secundus, Pliny the Younger, was a boob, a ponce, and a monumental suck-up.
They aren't total disasters - there are ghost stories and lots of plummy bits about household slaves and real estate prices. And books - refreshingly, the letters are full of the love of books, which wouldn't have been evident in the writings of his celebrated uncle, who didn't enjoy books so much as use them like an old, alcoholic British attache might have used the young Thai girls on his ministry staff.
And there's some joshing, all done in a Plimptonesque mandarin style but companionable nonetheless:
    To his friend Paulinus
I am angry. Whether I should be I am not sure, but I am angry. You know how love-feelings are sometimes unjust, often intemperate, and always susceptible. But what provokes them is weighty and perhaps just. Anyway, it is as if my anger is as justified as it is fierce. I am considerably angry because I have not heard from you for so long. There is only one way you can prevail on me, which is to send me, now at long last, streams of the lengthiest letters, for in my eyes this is the only genuine means of excusing yourself. All other excuses will not ring true. I won't hear of 'I was not in Rome,' or 'I was too busy.' As for 'I was somewhat out of sorts,' even the gods would not buy that!
