I . To Annius Severus. I have reaped the reward not only of my scrupulously fair dealing, but also of my reputation. Curianus left me a legacy, and, unless I flatter myself unduly, he has given signal distinction to the honest course of action I pursued. I have written to tell you this because it is my custom to discuss with you any matters which give me pain or pleasure, as freely as though I were talking to myself. Besides, I thought it would be unkind to defraud you, who have such a great regard for me, of the pleasure which I have received therefrom. For I am not such a perfect philosopher as to think it makes no difference whether I receive or not the approbation of others which is itself a kind of reward when I think that I have acted in an honourable manner. Farewell.

O n August 24, 79 Mount Vesuvius literally blew its top, spewing tons of molten ash, pumice and sulfuric gas miles into Vesuvius erupts, 1944 the atmosphere. A "firestorm" of poisonous vapors and molten debris engulfed the surrounding area suffocating the inhabitants of the neighboring Roman resort cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. Tons of falling debris filled the streets until nothing remained to be seen of the once thriving communities. The cities remained buried and undiscovered for almost 1700 years until excavation began in 1748. These excavations continue today and provide insight into life during the Roman Empire. An ancient voice reaches out from the past to tell us of the disaster. This voice belongs to Pliny the Younger whose letters describe his experience during the eruption while he was staying in the home of his Uncle, Pliny the Elder. The elder Pliny was an official in the Roman Court, in charge of the fleet in the area of the Bay of Naples and a naturalist. Pliny the Younger's letters were discovered in the 16th century. Wrath of the Gods A few years after the event, Pliny wrote a friend, Cornelius Tacitus, describing the happenings of late August 79 AD when the eruption of Vesuvius obliterated Pompeii, killed his Uncle and almost destroyed his family. At the time, Pliney was eighteen and living at his Uncle's villa in the town of Misenum. We pick up his story as he describes the warning raised by his mother:

His full Latin name was Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus. He was a nephew of Pliny the Elder, by whom he was adopted and whose name he took in 79; his name was originally Publius Caecilius Secundus. C. Plinius Secundus (Pliny the Younger) : Letters
: Manuscripts and transmission The Letters of the Younger Pliny have come down to us in 10 books, 9 of his personal letters, and book 10 containing his official correspondence with the Emperor Trajan. The last was written during his tour of administration of Bithynia, during which he may well have died. The route by which the text of all these letters reached us is a little complicated. There were 4 main groups, which however are related:
  • The 10-book collection. This contained all the letters originally, although subsets circulated as we will see. Copies of this can be easily recognised by the presence of tables of contents at the start of each book. The 9-book collection. This contained books 1-9. The 8-book collection. This is a subset of the 9-book collection, and contained books 1-7 and 9. The 100-letters collection. This is a subset of the 10-book collection, containing letters from the start to V, 6.
There are also late 'mixed' manuscripts drawing on more than one of these sources; there are early editions printed from now lost MSS of excellent origin; and there is a manuscript including parts of two printed editions plus manuscript material of its own. Both the 9 and 10 book collection go back to antiquity; and books 1-9 in the 10-book collection are not copied from the 9-book collection.

Pliny the Younger, Caius Plinius Caecilius Secundus
Pliny the Younger (c.62 - c.113) was the nephew and heir of the historian and naturalist Pliny the Elder, who perished in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. After the latter's death, presumably because he was adopted in the will, he changed his name from Caius Caecilius to Caius Plinius Caecilius Secundus . The famous Verginius Rufus was his guardian. Originally from Comum in Northern Italy and quite well to do through land holdings, he enjoyed an illustrious legal and administrative career, becoming consul in 100 CE at the age of 39, and finally going to Bithynia on a special commission from the emperor Trajan, where he is supposed to have died. Among his literary friends were Tacitus and Suetonius, and he was a patron of the poet Martial.

28. Pliny The Younger's First Letter To Tacitus
pliny the younger s first letter to Tacitus on the subject of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
http://www.historywalker.com/public2/02/pliny_letter1.html
Pliny's First Letter
In his first letter to Cornelius Tacitus (the historian) upon the subject of Vesuvius, Pliny the Younger (Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus) writes about how his uncle, Pliny the Elder, motivated by scientific curiosity and the desire to rescue people, set sail across the bay of Naples during the volcanic onslaught to meet his eventual death. Pliny's description of the eruption, the cloud that looked like a "pine tree", and its aftermath have helped modern vulcanologists piece together the events of that day and the type of volcanic eruption he depicts has been dubbed a Plinian eruption To Tacitus Your This phenomenon seemed to a man of such learning and research as my uncle extraordinary and worth further looking into. He ordered a light vessel to be got ready, and gave me leave, if I liked, to accompany him. I said I had rather go on with my work; and it so happened, he had himself given me something to write out. As he was coming out of the house, he received a note from Rectina, the wife of Bassus, who was in the utmost alarm at the imminent danger which threatened her; for her villa lying at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, there was no way of escape but by sea; she earnestly entreated him therefore to come to her assistance. He accordingly changed his first intention, and what he had begun from a philosophical, he now carries out in a noble and generous spirit. He ordered the galleys to be put to sea, and went himself on board with an intention of assisting not only Rectina, but the several other towns which lay thickly strewn along that beautiful coast.

Pliny the Younger's Observations
In 79 AD, Pliny the Elder died during the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius. His nephew, Pliny the Younger escaped the destruction of Pompeii and left a written account of the eruption. As you read the letter below, listen to this audio version read by a well-known actor: Now came the dust, though still thinly. I look back: a dense cloud looms behind us, following us like a flood poured across the land. "Let us turn aside while we can still see, lest we be knocked over in the street and crushed by the crowd of our companions." We had scarcely sat down when a darkness came that was not like a moonless or cloudy night, but more like the black of closed and unlighted rooms. You could hear women lamenting, children crying, men shouting. At last the cloud thinned out and dwindled to no more than smoke or fog. Soon there was real daylight. The sun was even shining, though with the lurid glow it has after an eclipse. The sight that met our still terrified eyes was a changed world, buried in ash like snow. We returned to Misenum and took care of our bodily needs, but spent the night dangling between hope and fear. Fear was the stronger, for the earth was still quaking and a number of people who had gone mad were mocking the evils that had happened to them and others with terrifying prognostications. We still refused to go until we heard news of my uncle, although we had felt danger and expected more. You will read what I have written, but will not take up your pen, as the material is not the stuff of history. You have only yourself to blame if it seems not even proper stuff for a letter. Farewell.

Mild sweetness, and the bitterness is well pronounced troughout with highlights of citrus, and do I dare say a I notice a slight pine taste well hidden in the backside? Very drinkable, and I could easily session this beer all night long. If you get a chance to drink this jewel in the Santa Rosa /San Fransisco area, make it a must. Degarth (2171) Tampa

Pliny the Younger
Pliny the Younger was the nephew of Pliny the Elder , and was visiting his uncle at Pompeii when his uncle died in the eruption . Pliny the Younger, however, did not die, and has left us the only eye-witness account of what the eruption was like. Pliny went on to become a fairly important politician in the Roman Empire under the emperor Trajan
Trajan Trajan sent Pliny to be the governor of Bithynia (on the Black Sea ) in 117 AD , where he had to run the province and make sure there were no revolts and everyone paid their taxes. While he was trying to keep order there, he ran into some problems with the Christians which provide our first evidence that Christianity had become illegal. Pliny was a great letter-writer, and he kept copies of many of his letters and later published them for everyone to read. Many of his letters have survived to the present day. They provide very useful information about the life of wealthy aristocrats in Rome during the Golden Age of the Roman Empire.
