Hank Nuwer: Writer
The pen may be mightier than the sword. But you can probably get more at a pawn shop for a sword than you can for a pen. It's what you WRITE with that pen that makes your instrument mighty. Here follows the daily diary for one regular guy who makes a living as a writer out of his rural Indiana home and who heads for Alaska and the outdoors every chance he gets.

A Conversation with
George Plimpton
In the following interview, George Plimpton slouches behind his oversized desk to give his insights into participatory journalism and the world of professional athletes. He died in 2003.
NUWER: Has this role-playing as a participatory journalist in these athletic events helped you as an actor in such films as Reds and Volunteers?
NUWER: When you were a percussionist [with the New York Philharmonic], did you ever do a book about the experience?
PLIMPTON: No, I did a television show about it. I should. I will.
NUWER: Ernest Hemingway respected your work as evidenced by the interview he gave you for The Paris Review, and the glowing review of Out of My League he wrote in 1961. What, in retrospect, are your thoughts about him?
NUWER: I understand that he brought you into a bullring with him. Do you a humorous war story about that?

An Oral History of George Plimpton: The Man Does Everything Rather Well
by George Gurley December 21, 1997 If Manhattan can be said to have a man of letters, few would argue with bestowing that title on George Plimpton, editor since 1953 of The Paris Review , inventor of participatory journalism, host of an endless stream of literary parties in his East 72nd Street town house. In his new book, Truman Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career , Mr. Plimpton, as he did with Edie Sedgwick and Robert F. Kennedy, has created an oral biography of an American icon. One could say that Mr. Plimpton, given his literary output and after-hours enthusiasms, prolongs Capote's motif of writers and society locked in a treacherous, giddy dance. In that vein, here is an oral biography of George Plimpton. Mr. Plimpton was born in Manhattan in 1927 and raised in Huntington, L.I. His father co-founded the law firm Debevoise Plimpton. Mr. Plimpton attended Phillips Exeter Academy but graduated from a high school in Daytona, Fla. He attended Harvard University, was editor of The Harvard Lampoon , graduated in 1950. He studied for two years at King's College, Cambridge, then moved to Paris, where, with Peter Matthiessen and Harold (Doc) Humes, he founded The Paris Review . In 1955, he moved back to New York. In 23 books and countless magazine pieces, he invented a new brand of journalism: playing for both the Detroit Lions and the New York Philharmonic, circus trapezing, photographing centerfolds for Playboy . In 1968, he married his first wife, Freddy Espy, and had two children. In 1992, he married Sarah Whitehead Dudley; they had twins. He still edits The Paris Review out of his town house and gets around Manhattan on a bicycle.

Reading George Plimpton's new book on Truman Capote Truman Capote, In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career feels like being at a fabulous cocktail party, where the champagne is flowing and the gossip is juicy. Truman brought together the worlds of literature, politics, money, art, fashion, media, and film; in short, he was a locus of celebrity. Written as an "oral biography," the book is about as much fun as one can have between the pages of a book.
For this issue of Bold Type, we feature Truman Capote's Black and White Ball. An excerpt describes what it was like to have attended, told by those envied few who were invited. Look through a gallery of photos from the still-legendary event and check out an interview with author and participatory journalist George Plimpton.

THE HORNBOOK AND ITS USE IN AMERICA BY GEORGE A. PLIMPTON In treating of the history and use of the hornbook in America, it is necessary first to study the history of the hornbook in the old world. The hornbook, in point of fact is not a book at all. Originally it was a piece of board with a handle shaped like the battledore in the old game of battledore and shuttle cock. On the face of the hornbook was either a piece of vellum or paper upon which the lesson was inscribed. This was protected by a sheet of translucent horn. This protection was of course necessary to keep the lesson from the possible stain of a pair of dirty little hands, as the hornbook was passed about from child to child. This hornbook of the seventeenth century is an excellent example (Figure 1) (Figure 2) . This little picture represents education at that period, and shows the teacher who is to conduct the boy to the heights of the Tower of Knowledge handing him a hornbook. The hornbook has upon it the letters of the alphabet, and if the boy masters these letters he will be able to enter the tower. The door through Although there are no hornbooks extant that I know of which are earlier than the sixteenth century, there is evidence that the hornbook was used before then. I happen to have in my library an arithmetical manuscript of Sacrobosco, dated about 1400, in which we come unexpectedly upon the picture of a hornbook. The monk who was copying this manuscript evidently became tired of Sacrobosco and his learning and so he made a little picture at the bottom of the page. This picture is a rather crude drawing of a school-room. We see the schoolmaster in his gown, and he is holding up before the pupil a hornbook on which are written not the usual alphabet but the Arabic numerals
