Biography of Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936)
Luigi Pirandello Luigi Pirandello was born in 1867 in Girgenti, now Agrigento, on the island of Sicily. His father was a sulfur dealer and expected his son to take up his trade, but Luigi excelled in his academics and was allowed to pursue a literary schooling. He entered the University of Rome in 1887, later transferring to Bonn University where he completed a doctoral thesis on his native Sicilian dialect. Pirandello initially translated Goethe's Roman elegies as his first creative effort. After meeting up with the Sicilian novelist Capuana, Pirandello focused his attention on naturalistic fiction. The Outcast in 1893 was his first novel and contained the roots of things that would appear in his later writing. Pirandello?s first widely acclaimed novel, The Late Mattia Pascal , was written in 1904. Within the next ten years, up until the First World War, he published two other novels and numerous short stories. In 1916 he first focused his attention on the theater and quickly became enthralled by the possibilities it presented. Inspired, Pirandello wrote nine plays in one year, including his first three plays, Better Think Twice About It!, Liola, and It is So!, If You Think So, which were all each written in less than a week. In 1920 he achieved critical success with As Before, Better than Before. In 1921 his career culminated in a five week period during which he wrote his two masterpieces

Pirandello, however, was not interested in business; he wanted to study. He first went to Palermo, the capital of Sicily, and, in 1887, to the University of Rome. After a quarrel with the professor of classics there, he went in 1888 to the University of Bonn, Ger., where in 1891 he gained his doctorate in philology for a thesis on the dialect of Agrigento. In 1894 his father arranged his marriage to Antonietta Portulano, the daughter of a business associate, a wealthy sulfur merchant. This marriage gave him financial independence, allowing him to live in Rome and to write. He had already published an early volume of verse

http://www.biographybase.com/biography/Pirandello_Luigi.html
Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Luigi Pirandello Biography Luigi Pirandello (June 28, 1867 – December 10, 1936) was an Italian writer and novelist, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1934.
He was born in a village with the curious name of Chaos (Xaos), a poor suburb of Girgenti (Agrigento, a poor town of southern Sicily), from a middle-class family.
He is known mainly for his writing of theatre, but his short stories and novels took up most of his career. He in fact also wrote some delicious novels in which he described his thoughts, often following Sicilian legends, or Italian little facts. Pirandello composed over 350 short stories, generally on realistic themes of Italian and Sicilian life. His poetry is rather less considered.
As in his works, nothing seems to have happened by casualty in his life. His family's sulphur mine was flooded and ruined while he was young, leading family to difficult conditions.
His wife Antonietta soon revealed suffering heavy mental diseases, and this gave Pirandello a deep acknowledgement of mental mechanisms, which he often referred to in his works (notably in Enrico IV (Henry IV)). In Il berretto a sonagli (Cap and Bells), he described in detail how to "become mad": to tell everyone the truth, the sole and cruel truth, regardless of manners or respect and in spite of social habits, soon will produce isolation and a reputation of mad.
Pirandello's best-known work is probably Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore (Six Characters in Search of an Author). Equally notable, if not as often performed, are the plays Così è (se vi pare) (Right You Are (If You Think You Are)) and Ciascuno a suo modo (Each in His Own Way). Another play, Come tu mi vuoi (As You Desire Me), was adapted for a 1932 Hollywood film starring Greta Garbo.

    Pirandello, Luigi
Pirandello, Luigi key , Italian author, b. Sicily. One of the great figures in 20th-century European theater, Pirandello was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Literature. After an extensive education, he began in the 1890s to write poetry and short stories, many of which reflect his interest in Sicilian folklore. In 1897 he became professor of Italian literature at the Normal College for Women in Rome. Before achieving fame Pirandello had many difficult years. Lack of public recognition, the failure of his father's mining business, and the 14-year-long insanity of his wife may account in part for the pessimism of his work. Pirandello wrote seven novels, among them
