Belated Reviews #3: H Beam Piper
H Beam Piper wrote mostly in the fifties and early sixties. He died thinking himself a failure, before receiving word that may have made a difference. Piper is a personal favorite, so I have more trouble than usual judging which of his works a new reader would enjoy today. The political tenor of Piper's works is fairly consistent: On the one side, reasonable men, willing to do what needs to be done and competent to do it. On the other side, corrupt officials, crooked lawyers, hypocritical or misguided (liberal) idealists, and the mob. The mob is important: Piper was well-read in history, and his future history features what he perceived to be a perennial tendency for the barbarians at the gates or the barbarians within to short-sightedly pull down civilization. Many contemporary authors duplicate his stance, but not the gently ironic tone of much of his writing. Most of Piper's works (except for two novels) have been reprinted. The majority form a future history of humanity in space repeating the errors of the past. The majority of the rest belong to his 'Paratime' sequence, about a civilization that spans (or at least interacts with) a multitude of alternate Earths, and whose Paratime Police attempt to oversee those interactions. Piper's books include Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen (***+). Sometimes the Paratime Police mess up, and this particular mess drops a member of the Pennsylvania State Police into an alternate medieval-tech land which is about to be conquered and destroyed at the behest of a theocracy which owns the local gunpowder monopoly. Fortunately Calvin (soon Kalvan) remembers his chemistry and even more important his military history. This book is probably the main inspiration for the entire military-sf subgenre whose main contemporary practitioners are Drake, Pournelle, and Stirling. It focuses as much (or more) upon the technological, logistical, and political problems Kalvan faces as it does upon his battles.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Henry Beam Piper March 23 – c. November 6 ) was an American science fiction author. He wrote many short stories and several novels. He is best known for his extensive Terro-Human Future History series of stories and a shorter series of "Paratime" alternate history tales. He wrote under the name H. Beam Piper . Another source gives his name as "Horace Beam Piper" and a different date of death. citation needed His gravestone says "Henry Beam Piper". Piper himself may have been the source of part of the confusion; he told people the H stood for Horace, encouraging the assumption that he used the initial because he disliked his name.

Bio:
"Horace Beam Piper was born in 1904, the son of a Protestant minister. He had no formal education and at age eighteen went to work as a laborer for the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona yards. Throughout his life he was a reticent and guarded man and as a result we know little about his early years. He was largely self-educated; he obtained a deep knowledge of science and history: 'without subjecting myself to the ridiculous misery of four years in the uncomfortable confines of a raccoon coat.'"
"A solitary man to the end, Piper did not tell his friends of his financial predicament. Instead, he took a way out that could only be reasonable to a man who abhorred state handouts and was determined not to burden his friends and family. On Monday, November 9th, 1964, H. Beam Piper shut off all the utilities to his apartment in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, put painter's drop-cloths over the walls and floor, and took his own life with a handgun from his collection. In his suicide note, he gave an explanation that is pure Piper:
"I don't like to leave messes when I go away, but if I could have cleaned up any of this mess, I wouldn't be going away. H. Beam Piper'"

"Omnilingual", by H. Beam Piper
[First in a series about Linguistics in Science Fiction. Fair warning: I plan to spoil the ending How would you decipher texts in an unknown language, written in an unknown writing system? H. Beam Piper 's short story "Omnilingual" , originally published in 1957, is about an archaeological expedition on Mars, exploring the remains of a dead civilization. The expedition's linguist is confronted with a seemingly insurmountable problem: texts in an ancient language with no remaining speakers, and for which no bilingual text exists. What's an Earth linguist on Mars to do? This story is good-old-fashioned science fiction. Mars is almost, but not quite, dead: the Martian civilization is gone and the Martians are extinct, but there's still some oxygen in the atmosphere, and some life survives in the dry ocean basins. The expedition is large and well equipped, and a bit reckless—for working space, they're in the habit of caulking up all the cracks in 50,000-year-old buildings, pressurizing them, and then smoking cigarettes in the resulting pure-oxygen environment, presumably all the while laughing in the face of danger. Our heroine is Martha Dane, Archaeologist. She's been collecting scraps of Martian writing, trying to decipher the language, but it doesn't look promising.

The Complete Paratime

Review by
Robert Wilfred Franson Ace, New York, 2001
424 pages September 2001
The Complete Paratime collects the six science-fiction stories of H. Beam Piper's excellent Paratime series, ranging in length from short story to novel. Paratime and another way. A civilization on one of the time-lines millennia ago discovered the secret of paratemporal transportation that allows it to exploit the endless resources of these alternate Earths, via sidewise or lateral time-travel across the myriad time-lines. This First Level civilization also considers itself obliged to police their citizens across all these time-lines: the task of the Paratime Police. Varied police investigations and the related adventures provide the basis of the Paratime Series These stories appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1948-1955 and (as renamed) Analog in 1964-1965. They should be read in the order that they appeared, and as here collected in The Complete Paratime ; it's not so much that the plots build on previous ones, but the reader's comprehension of what Paratime is, how it works, and why the Paratime Police is important, progresses through the series. Murray Leinster's ground-breaking " Sidewise in Time " from 1934 is clearly a model, but H. Beam Piper is one of the great fictional theorists of alternate worlds.

Beam Piper (what few are left) are almost certainly aware of at least one salient aspect of his life: he killed himself. What nobody seems to be aware of is why, or exactly when. What is known is that sometime between November 5th, 1964 (the date of the last entry in his diary) and either the 9th or the 11th (again, nobody knows for sure) when his body was discovered, Piper spread tarps on the floor and walls of his apartment and covered his furniture with drop cloths, took a .38 caliber revolver from his extensive collection of firearms, and fatally shot himself.
