Poet on the Poem, The
American Poetry Review, The Jan/Feb 2005 by Pinsky, Robert My Poem "Louie Louie" APR's invitation to write about one of my recent poems gives me a chance to think aloud about my recent obsessions and darknesses. These include: forgetting, especially American forgetting, as a form of memory; the communal implications of the word thing and of things; jokes and standup comedy with that manic love and anger expressed by schpritzing; my own love and anger toward groups of which I am one, such as Americans or academics.

American poet, nonfiction writer, and translator.
    INTRODUCTION
Robert Pinsky's poetry is noted for its combination of vivid imagery and clear, discursive language that explores such themes as truth, the history of nations and individuals, and the transcendent aspects of simple acts. Pinsky strives to create an organized view of the world, often confronting and trying to explain the past to bring order to the present. Recurring subjects in his work include the Holocaust, religion, and childhood. Pinsky's moral tone and mastery of poetic meter often are compared to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century English poets, and the insights conveyed in his analytical works on poetry have led critics to place him in the tradition of other poet-critics such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Matthew Arnold, T. S. Eliot, and W. H. Auden.
    Biographical Information
Pinsky was born in Long Branch, New Jersey. Although he was not an accomplished student in school, Pinsky attended Rutgers University, where he formed friendships with a group of budding young writers and poets who published work in the school's journal

Robert Pinsky By Barry Goldensohn If there is a consistent ground rule for Robert Pinsky's poems, early to recent, it is that apparent simplicity is the invitation to troubling complexity. It is an attractive movement of the mind: finding exceptions to simple rules, unexpected textures to smooth surfaces, division and ambivalence to simple feelings. And the strategies are abundance, surprise and variations on a theme. In the first poem in his first book ( Sadness and Happiness ),"Poem about People", what begins as genial and compassionate people-watching, Balding young men in work shoes And green work pants, beer belly And white T-shirt, the porky walk Back to the truck, polite; possible To feel briefly like Jesus, A gust of diffuse tenderness... turns to a friend's painful divorce to a movie clip that in turn leads to a burning vision of desperate personal shame: ...the sensitive Young Jewish soldier nearly drowns Trying to rescue the thrashing Anti-semitic bully, swimming across The river raked by nazi fire, The awful part is the part truth: Hate my whole kind , but me, Love me for myself.

Tom Perrotta Every few years, a fall publishing season emerges that should remind us that Boston — and New England at large — could be the literary epicenter of America. This is one of those seasons. Heading the charge is National Book Award–winning Boston University professor HA JIN In A Free Life (Pantheon, October 30), Jin, who emigrated here in the ’80s, tells the tale of a Chinese writer trying to make his way in the USA. Also from these parts, you’ll find Like You’d Understand, Anyway (Knopf, September 25): stories by hilarious Williams College professor JIM SHEPARD , as well as The River of Sighs (Knopf, September 25)

robert pinsky It s wise of you to read the poems in a magazine before . robert pinsky Thank God, I d be willing to read anything in the first two books
    http://www.smartishpace.com/home/poetsqa/pinsky_answers.htm
James from Cincinnati, Ohio I have not had much luck getting my poetry published. I have read a variety of journals and publications trying to find those where my poems might fit. However, after reading many of the publications, I am often left wondering if I am missing something and I think: "My poems are not like this, so does this mean my poems are not any good?" So my question is: To submit or not submit? How does one know if what they are writing is just crap or if it has some merit?
ROBERT PINSKY: It's wise of you to read the poems in a magazine before submitting your work to it; if you don't find anything attractive in the work the editors publish, they are not likely to want what you are writing. If you find some poetry that you do like in a magazine, the editors may be interested in your work.
This is true if you are experienced, too: I like what the magazines Salmagundi and Threepenny Review publish, for example, so I send my poems to the editors there.
The truth is that magazine publication is very difficultand sometimes achieving it is an anticlimax: if you had a poem in The New Yorker next week, there would be a pleasant interval when your friends and neighbors see it, and when you can think about people you don't know getting some emotion from it. But the next week, another issue of the magazine comes out, and for many weeks after that, and you still have all the same large and small problems, including the problem of ambition and frustration, that you ever had.

Durham, NC Robert Pinsky - an American poet, essayist, literary critic, and translator - served as Poet Laureate of the United States from 1997 to 2000. During that time, he became a public ambassador for poetry, founding the Favorite Poem Project, in which thousands of Americans of varying backgrounds, all ages, and from every state share their favorite poems. Pinsky believed that, contrary to stereotype, poetry has a strong presence in American culture. The project sought to document that presence, giving voice to the American audience for poetry. Pinsky will hold an informal discussion on poetry at Duke at noon, Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Center for Documentary Studies.
