Woman on the Edge of Time
Marge Piercy
Ballantine Books 1983 A book review by Danny Yee I only read Woman on the Edge of Time because I twice saw it favourably compared with Ursula Le Guin 's The Dispossessed , but I enjoyed it so much that I have since read most of Marge Piercy's other novels. Woman on the Edge of Time is both a searing indictment of some of the fundamental assumptions of our society and an intriguing portrayal of a "utopian" alternative. Connie, the heroine, is a 37 year old Mexican-American living on welfare, who is incarcerated in a mental hospital and subjected to "mind-control" treatment. The realism of the narrative makes this really chilling (it is reminiscent of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest ) and, combined with the knowledge we gradually acquire of her life story, it paints a bleak and far too plausible picture of how our society has institutionalised oppression of the weak. The story culminates with Connie's resolution to fight back, with a recognition that she is fighting a war on behalf of others as well as herself. To return to the comparison which prompted this review: Le Guin's The Dispossessed was very clearly in the classical anarchist tradition, though it incorporated some ideas from modern linguistics and ecology.

To be of use
by Marge Piercy The people I love the best
jump into work head first
without dallying in the shallows
and swim off with sure strokes almost out of sight.
They seem to become natives of that element,
the black sleek heads of seals
bouncing like half submerged balls. I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart,
who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience, who strain in the mud and the muck to move things forward, who do what has to be done, again and again. I want to be with people who submerge in the task, who go into the fields to harvest and work in a row and pass the bags along, who stand in the line and haul in their places, who are not parlor generals and field deserters but move in a common rhythm when the food must come in or the fire be put out.

    Notes on Life and Works
Marge Piercy was born March 31, 1936, in Detroit, of mother Bert Bunnin Piercy and father Robert Douglas Piercy. She was brought up Jewish by her mother and grandmother. In Early Grrrl , Marge Piercy says, "I started writing poetry regularly and seriously when I was fifteen and my family moved into a house larger by far than we had ever lived in. For the first time, I had a room of my own with a door that closed and some measure of privacy. I was upstairs, with the roomers, while my parents were downstairs" (98).

04/13/03, G-06 By JACK RIGHTMYER Staff Writer Marge Piercy speaks her mind; to read from work at RPI When author Marge Piercy answers a question she’s blunt and direct like many of the characters she has written about. “I am a feminist,” she said in a recent phone interview from her home in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. “I don’t get weary of it. I get weary of the fallout through the years. There have been many grants I haven’t gotten because of my politics and what I’ve written about, but that’s who I am.” She is an activist writer, a one-time member of the antiwar group Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), and a person who speaks her mind about politics, the problems of society and inequality. “The reason I am political,” she said, “is that I want there to be a more just apportionment of the world’s pleasure and less unjust apportionment of the world’s pain.” Piercy is an author of fifteen novels, a memoir titled ‘Sleeping with Cats,’ and fifteen collections of her poetry. She has written mainstream fiction, historical novels, science fiction, feminist theory and even liturgy. She collaborated with her husband Ira Wood, the publisher of Leapfrog Press, to write the novel ‘Storm Tide.’ Her most recent poetry collection, “Colors Passing Through Us” (157 pages, $23, Alfred A. Knopf) contains poetry about her favorite topics, the lives of women, nature, Jewish rituals, love between men and women, and politics. “People call me a prolific writer,” she said, “I don’t really believe that, but I can switch from writing poems, to memoir to novel writing very easily. There are so many things in the world to write about, and I am a curious person, always learning things that fascinate me.”
