Marge Piercy (1936- ) Marge Piercy is an American novelist, essayist, and poet best known for fiction with a feminist slant. Her writing stems from a political commitment that began in the 1960s in the Vietnam anti-war movement. Her early novels, such as "Small Changes"(1973), have been used as historical documents in women's studies'courses. Often her protagonists, like Connie in "Woman on the Edge of Time"(1976), are women trying to establish some control over worlds that are increasingly restrictive. Her latest novel, "He, She, and It" , was published in 1991. Like her novels, her poetrysuch as "The Moon Is Always Female"(1980) explores feminism and feminity.

WRITERS ON WRITING
Life of Prose and Poetry an Inspiring Combination
By MARGE PIERCY henever I face an audience with at least minimal familiarity with my work, there are two questions always asked: "Why do you write both fiction and poetry?" "What's the difference between writing poetry and fiction?" I have various glib answers I whip out of my failing brain. I mention that while it may be rarer for men to cross genre lines, some, like Richard Price, who produces fiction and film scripts, do. However, many women work in more than one genre, and then I rattle off a list: Margaret Atwood, Erica Jong, Adrienne Rich, Alice Walker, Rita Dove, Colleen McElroy, Nikki Giovanni, Joan Didion, Lillian Hellman, Linda Hogan; and that's without trying hard. Sometimes I say that if a writer works in more than one genre, the chances of getting writer's block are greatly diminished. If I am stuck in a difficult passage of a novel, I may jump ahead to smoother ground, or I may pause and work on poems exclusively for a time. If I lack ideas for one genre, usually I have them simmering for the other. I am always going back and forth. It's a rare period that is devoted only to one. That happens when I am revising a novel to a deadline, working every day until my eyes or my back gives out, and when I am putting a collection of poetry together, making a coherent artifact out of the poems of the last few years and reworking them as I go.

Historical Fiction ISBN: 0449215571 This richly complex novel is by far Piercy's best as she follows the lives of ten people during World War II. It's not the war most novelists have written about. The chapters alternately tell the stories of people behind the scenes: a female pilot; a painter who gets caught up in the Resistance; a factory worker at home; a Jewish Marine fighting both the Japanese and anti-Semitism; a man dodging U-boats while running supplies; a romance writer striving to become a serious journalist; a cryptographer in Washington; a young privileged American who finds herself in the intelligence service in London; a spoiled Parisian who scorns her Jewish background until war changes her view of her heritage; and, the Parisian's younger sister who is sent to America for safety. Many of their stories intertwine eventually, some tangentially, some profoundly.

Marge Piercy (b. 1936), U.S. poet, novelist, and political activist. As quoted in Mountain Moving Day, by Elaine Gill (1973). "This book" was a feminist collection of poetry by women. "Loving feels lonely in a violent world,
irrelevant to people burning like last year's weed
with bellies distended, with fish throats agape and flesh melting down to glue. We can no longer shut out the screaming That leaks through the ventilation system ..." Marge Piercy (b. 1936), U.S. poet, novelist, and political activist. "Community," lines 1-6 (1969). Referring to television and photographic images of the Vietnam War, which was at its height when this was written. Piercy was a prominent activist in the antiwar movement.

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
I have taught Piercy's poems in a Women in Literature course offered for credit in general education and in a course on American Women Poets. Most students find her very direct and accessible, but some are unnerved by her openness in expressing her feelings and describing her experience while others are daunted by her high expectations of herself and other human beings. Students generally profit from small group discussions where they can share related experiences and discuss the pressures Piercy's poems exert on them. If I had enough time to use one of her novels in relationship to the poems, it would be wonderful to contrast their highly researched, intricate plots with the structures of the poems. Her own voice in the poems is direct; it's fascinating to see how she suspends it in the novels for various narrative purposes.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
Piercy's poems raise important issues related to feminism, ecology, imperialism, civil rights, religious heritage, love, and effective relationships. Often one issue leads to another. Like
