Q
A Distant Shore is your seventh novel, the latest addition to a body of work that Time Magazine recently called "one of literature's great meditations on race and identity." How does this novel further these themes in your work? Phillips: I think the more you write and publish, the clearer it becomes just what your territory is. I'm more concerned with "identity" than with "race." The latter is just one component in the former, along with religion, gender, nationality, class, etc. This is obviously a novel about the challenged identity of two individuals, but it's also a novel about Englishor nationalidentity. Q: Unlike your previous novels

Thursday 13 September 2007 21:45-22:30 (Radio 3) Philip Dodd talks to writer Caryl Phillips about his new book Foreigners, which explores the tragic, resonant lives of three black British men.
Caryl also explains what led him to rework Simon Schama's history of the abolition of the slave trade, Rough Crossings, as a play. Duration: 45 minutes Playlist Carlyl Phillips
Philip Dodd talks to acclaimed author Caryl Phillips about his new book, Foreigners , which mixes reportage, fiction and biography to reveal the tragic stories of three black Englishmen. Phillips explains how the seemingly disparate narratives, spanning from the 18th century to the nineteen sixties, speak of the complex role of the foreigner in English society and why, twenty years into his writing career, he feels the themes of identity and race are as urgent as ever.  Foreigners is published by Secker and Warburg.

A Distant Shore by Caryl Phillips
The Scholar Distant Shore last night, and I must say that it was good enough to post about. Now, the summary sounds a little dry, I will admit that, but the book maintains your attention because Phillips refuses to give you all the details you need at once. Usually when I finish a book, I slam it closed and enjoy the freedom of doing whatever else pleases me, but when I finished Phillips book, I took another five minutes to read the summaries for his other titles. This will definitely not be the last book I read by this author. This pastiche of Driving Miss Daisy is haunted by the threat of miscegenation, for which Dorothy and Solomon are eventually punished by their bigoted community. She is quietly cracking up, and when she takes a demented trip to the coast to visit her dead sister, Solomon is beaten up and dumped in the canal by the village thugs. The death of legendary jazz trumpeter Joss Moody exposes an extraordinary secret, one that enrages his adopted son, Colman, leading him to collude with a tabloid journalist. Besieged by the press, his widow Millie flees to a remote Scottish village, where she seeks solace in memories of their marriage. The reminiscences of those who knew Joss Moody render a moving portrait of a shared life founded on an intricate lie, one that preserved a rare, unconditional love. ~ by naysue on November 11, 2007.

Get more information about this book Plot Summary of Cambridge "Emily is a thirty year old spinster sent to the Carribean to see the state of her father's plantation. After a treacherous sea voyage on which her maid dies, Emily arrives to find that her father's plantation manager has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and in his place is the new plantation manager, Arnold Brown. Brown slowly seduces Emily, who incurs the wrath of Brown's former slave mistress. She soon begins to fear that Brown's former mistress is insane, and her life may be in danger.
Meanwhile, Brown's mistress' husband, a slave named Cambridge, is also distressed. He knows that Brown is using his wife (whose mental state is delicate), yet he is powerless to stop him. Cambridge's anger at Brown grows when he learns that Brown is a brutal overseer who may have had a hand in murdering his predecessor. When an attempt to confront Brown turns tragic, Cambridge stands unjustly accused of Brown's murder."

Site Index March 1, 2007 Prizewinning Author Caryl Phillips to Read Acclaimed author Caryl Phillips, whose oeuvre Time magazine has called "one of literature's great meditations on race and identity," will read from new work on Tuesday, March 6, at 8 p.m. in Goodhart Music Room. The event is free and open to the public. Phillips, who was born on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, raised in Leeds, England, and educated at Oxford, is renowned for his exploration of the consequences of displacement and diaspora. His fiction often employs patchworks of narratives set in different historical periods to cross boundaries of race, gender and nationality. His forthcoming book, Foreigners , to be published by Knopf this fall, is described as "a brilliant hybrid of reportage, fiction and historical fact that tells the stories of three black men whose tragic lives speak resoundingly to the place and role of the foreigner in English society."
