Orinda to Lucasia
Parting October 1661 at London
By Katherine Philips ("Orinda")
Edited by Jack Lynch
The text comes from Philips's Poems by the Most Deservedly Admired Mrs. Katherine Philips, the Matchless Orinda ADIEU dear object of my Love's excess,
And with thee all my hopes of happiness,
With the same fervent and unchanged heart
Which did it's whole self once to thee impart,
(And which though fortune has so sorely bruis'd,
Would suffer more, to be from this excus'd)
I to resign thy dear Converse submit,
Since I can neither keep, nor merit it.
Thou hast too long to me confined been,
Who ruine am without, passion within. My mind is sunk below thy tenderness, And my condition does deserve it less; I'm so entangl'd and so lost a thing By all the shocks my daily sorrow bring, That would'st thou for thy old Orinda call Thou hardly could'st unravel her at all. And should I thy clear fortunes interline With the incessant miseries of mine? No, no, I never lov'd at such a rate To tye thee to the rigours of my fate, As from my obligations thou art free

    1. Introduction
About PhiloLogic: PhiloLogic, developed by the ARTFL Project at the University of Chicago in collaboration with The University of Chicago Library's Electronic Text Services , provides sophisticated searching of a wide variety of large encoded databases on the World Wide Web. It is an easy to use, yet powerful, full-text search, retrieval, and reporting system for large multimedia databases (texts, images, sound) with the ability to understand complex text structures (e.g., SGML, BetaCode) with rich metadata. Its functions were originally designed and continue to be for scholarly research in databases of literary, religious, philosophical, and historical texts. Important historical encyclopedias and dictionaries are also ideally suited for development under PhiloLogic. The Project , for example, is an implementation of a full hypermedia system supporting full-text retrieval and navigation with hyper-textual cross-referencing and full digital imaging support in a single, easy-to-use system.

Reading pseudonyms in seventeenth-century English coterie literature. Ezell, Margaret J.M.
    Essays in Literature
The study of pseudonyms is one of the oldest activities of literary historians. In its first stages, "pseudepigrapha" was an important arena of scholarly endeavor because of its goal of establishing the canon of the New Testament through the correct identification and authentication of authors and texts. During the Renaissance, the primary interest in this field, whether theological or classical, was attribution and the unmasking of fraud, involving, as Taylor and Mosher characterize it, critical methodologies "standing between higher criticism and investigations in plagiarism and forgery" (vii).
Such techniques of investigation lie behind such seventeenth-century texts as Vincent Placcius's Theatrum Anonynorum et Pseudonymoron (1674) and Adrien Baillet's Auteurs deguisez (1690), whose contents consist of long lists revealing the "true" identities of a wide variety of authors. In these early studies, as well as such later ones as Halkett and Laing (the standard reference work) and Alice Kahler Marshall, the goal is to establish literary ownership of a particular work or to validate the credentials of the author by discovering the identity masked by the pseudonym. The historical questions raised by the use of pseudonyms in the period to be discussed in this essay, English literature in the seventeenth century, would thus appear to be quite simple: who was Urania? Was there really a Poliarchus? Traditionally, pseudonyms are read as fiddles to be solved; the theoretical issue to be resolved in this mode of reading is "who," not "why."

    Katherine Fowler Philips
Katherine Fowler was born in London to a merchant class family. She was educated in boarding school and was married at age 16 to James Philip, a man of 54. Katherine's husband encouraged her literary interests and, in general, left her to her own affairs. She spent her time in London, while he stayed primarily on the coast of Wales. Katherine had two children, one who died in infancy. Katherine developed an organization of women that she called "The Society of Friendship," within which the members each assumed classical pseudonyms. Katherine was known as Orinda. In her poetry, she referred to herself and her friends using their pseudonyms. Her poetry was greatly admired in her time, and she was often referred to as "The Matchless Orinda." While most of her poetry was about her women lovers and was sensual in nature, the poems were viewed as expressions of platonic love, rather than sexual love. Because women did not possess the body parts to complete a heterosexual sex act, their love was seen as puresomething which Katherine remarks upon herself in her poem "To My Excellent Lucasia, On Our Friendship." Katherine's three most significant relationships were with Mary Awbrey (Rosania), Anne Owen (Lucasia), and Elizabeth Boyle (Celimena). She was involved with Lucasia for ten years and wrote over half her poems to this lover. Celimena was her most brief relationshipKatherine fell in love with her in 1664, the year of Katherine's death from smallpox. She was 33.

(1) By the seventeenth century, when Philips sought Jeremy Taylor's (1613-67) opinion about female capacity for friendship, prescriptive treatises on friendship were well integrated into the fabric of English cultural life and ideology. Taylor's "A Discourse of the Nature, Offices, and Measures, of Friendship, with Rules of Conducting It, in a Letter to the Most Ingenious and Excellent Mrs. Katharine [sic] Philips" (1657), reaffirmed traditional views in denying women's capacity for friendship with men and ignoring friendship between women: "A man is the best friend in trouble, but a woman may be equal to him in the days of joy: a woman can as well increase our comforts, but cannot so well lessen our sorrows." (7) Philips responds to this in her poem "A Friend":
