Edith Mary Pargeter alias
Ellis Peters
Edith Pargeter was born in Horsehay in the Shropshire on September 28, 1913 and lived there all her life. After studies in a high school of Oxford, she works as a chemist's assistant in Dawley between 1933 and 1940. It is during this period, in 1936 to be precise, that she writes her first two novels Hortensius, Friend of Nero and Iron-bound . In 1940, she joins the Women's Royal Navy Service and receives in 1944 the British Empire medal. During the war, she publishes two other novels, Ordinary people (1941) and She goes to war (1942). After the war, she publishes several other novels, but it is in 1951 that she writes for the first time a mystery novel ( Fallen into the pit ). In this novel, appears the police officer George Felse, that will come back in other investigations. Various novels separate her first mystery novel from the second in 1959, the Mask of death , that she publishes under the pseudonym of Ellis Peters. The honour arrives with her fourth novel, Death and the Joyful that receives the Edgar Allan Poe award by Mystery Writers of America for the best novel. Then she is going to write twelve more novels featuring the sergeant Felse and his son Dominic.

The Solution to History

Edith Pargeter (aka Ellis Peters) Ellis Peters’ series of novels about the sleuthing monk Brother Cadfael began with A Morbid Taste For Bones in 1977. In the following decades, she would write a further nineteen novels about Cadfael, and a number of other writers would also adopt the idea of medieval detective fiction, with varying degrees of ambition and success. These days the historical mystery buff can choose from works featuring Owen Archer, Prioress Eleanor, Petroc of Auneford, Mathew Shardlake, and many others. From a brief survey of the genre, it’s a wonder that anyone noticed when the Black Death took hold, as the inhabitants of Britain had apparently been offing each other in industrial numbers right through the medieval era. Even when the historical genre becomes grittier and less “cozy”, it still maintains a recognisable shape. The world of Tudor lawyer Matthew Shardlake is very different from that of Brother Cadfael, with its corrupt churchmen, power politics and sadistic murders, but Shardlake would feel thoroughly at home in the company of Harry Bosch, Kay Scarpetta, or any number of modern American detectives. They still all believe in the application of evidence, personal integrity in the face of baffling evil, and the need for right to prevail. Of course these statements can’t be generalised across the whole of historical mystery fiction. Umberto Eco’s

[Book Review] A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES by Ellis Peters
Fiction/Genre: Historical Fiction Mystery
Philip Williams reviews A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES by Ellis Peters (Morrow, 1977):
Brother Columbanus, a monk in the Benedictine Monastery in Shrewsbury, claims that he has had encounters with Winifred, a Welsh saint, who tells him she is unhappy with the lack of care and dedication her grave receives in the Welsh village of Gwytherin. Brother Columbanus claims that St. Winifred wants her bones to be brought to the Shrewsbury Abbey in England. Another brother, John, is very skeptical of these claims. He believes that the brother is motivated by ambition since having the relic at Shrewsbury would make both the abbey and Columbanus famous.
The Abbot believes that Columbanus has has real visions and sends an expedition of monks to Wales to retrieve the bones of St. Winifred. One of the monks is Brother Cadfael, an herbalist. Before becoming a monk later in life, Cadfael had been a soldier and a sailor and had participated in the capture of Jerusalem during the Crusades. He is part of the expedition because he is of Welsh descent and can speak the language.
