"A Rare Benedictine" collects three short stories about Brother Cadfael, Ellis Peter's 12th-century monk and sleuth. In "A Light on the Road to Woodstock," fans learn of the chain of events that led Cadfael, a former Crusader and sailor, to enter the monastic life. Cadfael briefly enters the employ of a lord involved in a land dispute with the Shrewsbury abbey and discovers the lord's deceitful plot for winning the lawsuit. In "The Price of Light,"...

One Corpse Too Many

When is a body one too many? When the official count says 94, yet clearly there are 95! Thus begins the math problem that Brother Cadfael must deal with in “One Corpse Too Many,” the second in this series. Who is this extra body? It is 1138 and all England is astrife with civil war between the factions of Stephen and the Empress Maud. It is an ugly scene, with the church, not to mention the citizens, torn between loyalties. In this instance, ...

Outside of a Dog: Kate Nepveu's Book Log
Friday, January 2, 2004 For Christmas, Chad got me some Edward Eager books, including Knight's Castle and The Time Garden , which I read New Year's Eve and Day. I loved Half Magic as a kid, and read its sequel, Magic by the Lake , two summers ago. The rest of Eager's books, though, were the kind of thing I just never got around to buying, so these were a perfect gift. Knight's Castle and The Time Garden feature the kids of the Half Magic protagonists; there's one or two connections between the two sets of books, but you needn't read them in any particular order. In each of these books, as in the prior two, the kids come upon a form of magic, have adventures, and grow up a bit (though not too pedantically). (I have another Eager

The Cadfael Books by Ellis Peters
A Rare Benedictine And so it is hardly a surprise that a weary traveler, sailor and former Crusader would cease his wanderings in this particular spot. Within the Abbey walls, all may be peaceful, but there are ample opportunities for a rough-edged philosopher to spread peace, love and justice in unconventional ways. When the eyes of the law prove insufficient, there is Brother Cadfael. The Virgin in the Ice , for example, sees the rescue of a pair of lost orphans and their minder, driven out by siege, complicated by the allegiance of their uncle to Empress Maud, which has prevented his entrance to Shropshire. features what appears to be a simple matter of revenge, but is in fact a symptom of a larger intrigue played out within a medieval marketplace. The Summer of the Danes takes place amidst civil unrest, with brothers contending for power on the coast, as a headstrong young woman defies those around her to seek independence (and gets kidnapped in the process). The Summer of the Danes Still, this is an unquestionably medieval society. Rogues abound sometimes young, sometimes drunk, often both. Young ladies blush with a wholesomely delicate, entrancing beauty that seems to have eluded modern fashions. But spare the condescension secrets are kept behind those dewy eyes, or, just as likely, nestled among gold-spun hair. Names of people and places play like music, and deliciously rare words become part of the common vocabulary: brazier, decoction, febrifuge. Peters gives her characters a cadence which seems natural but not modern, historical but not dated. Forests are alive, and paths become as important as those who walk upon them. The Cadfael novels are richly rooted in local geography, allowing the reader to move through this world and become a part of it.

Today, we look at Ellis Peters, author of the Cadfael medieval murder mystery series.
Though Ellis Peters, the pen name for mystery writer Edith Pargeter (1913-1995), wrote many mystery series throughout her lifetime, she is best known for her medieval Cadfael series. Cadfael is a fictional, 12th century, Welsh ex-crusader-turned-Benedictine-monk whose skills as an herbalist always get him into trouble of the sleuthing kind. Born in Shropshire, Peters began her writing career in the 1950s. She soon made a reputation for herself in the field and also received the Czechoslovak Society for International Relations Gold Medal in 1968 for her work in translating works from Czech and otherwise patronizing Czech literature. Peters began the Cadfael series in 1977 with A Morbid Taste for Bones . She went on to write 19 more novels and a collection of short stories in the series. In the 1990s, Derek Jacobi appeared as Cadfael in a TV series based on the books. The series is occasionally formulaic (a recurring theme of star-crossed young lovers appears, for example) and always stuck to the ongoing formula of a murder mystery. But Peters made a couple of decisions in characterization and setting early on that allowed her to rise above the traditional romantic view of the Middle Ages as either bright, cardboard castles loaded with knights and ladies or the opposite "revisionist" view of medieval times as nasty, brutish and short, with everyone running around in rags covered with mud.

G.W. Peters at Ellis Island, 1903
Unfortunately, we don't know much about G.W. Peters. I found a couple of practically useless links in my search but that shouldn't keep you from looking. Information turns up (and sometimes disappears) all the time. These illustrations appeared in The Century Magazine for March 1903 in an article by Jacob A. Riis entitled In the Gateway of Nations. Click on images to enlarge them. Peters has not become as famous as some of his (or her) contemporaries, but his/her work is not worth dismissing as being just that of another hack. I find a lot of humanity in the faces even if some of the poses appear stiff. It could be that Peters patched together many drawings from individual photos taken at Ellis Island. Judging from the crowds of immigrants being processed it would seem unlikely that Peters could be working with a sketch pad and not be in the way. Riis writes: "How it all came back to me as I stood on the deck of the ferry-boat plowing its way from the Battery Park to Ellis Island. They were there, my fellow-travelers of old: the men with their strange burdens of feather-beds, cooking-pots, and things unknowable, but mighty of bulk, in bags of bed-ticking much the worse for wear. . . ."
