    Ellis Peters
Ellis Peters is the pseudonym of Edith Pargeter, who wrote some sixty-five books before her death in October of 1995 at the age of 82. She wrote under the name of Ellis Peters to clearly delineate her mystery stories from her other work, taking the name Ellis from her brother, and Petra (Peter) from a friend in Czechoslavkia.
Edith Pargeter was born September 13, 1913, at Horsehay, Shropshire, England. Her father was a clerk at the local ironworks there. She did not attend a university, but instead studied the surrounding country of Shropshire, which she evidently loved. If you believe in reincarnation, it's not difficult to suppose that Edith Pargeter, writing as Ellis Peters, had a life in that area during the twelfth century - so clearly does she portray that time and those circumstances in all her famous Brother Cadfael novels, as well as 'The Heaven Tree Trilogy'.
Before World War II Edith Pargeter worked at Dawley in the capacity of a chemist's assistant. During those years she bean to write for publication as well as studying the effects of medicine. Almost instinctively Ms. Pageter knew the healing properties of certain herbs and natural mixtures; all of which would come in handily when she proceeded to compose her nineteen Brother Cadfael mysteries, begun much later in 1977. Before that, in 1962 or thereabouts, Edith Pargeter wrote 'The Heaven Tree Trilogy' - also set in the the twelfth century - and a book not to be missed, even though it's not among her mystey output.

Wells Ann Reading trove of information and some other links The Cadfael Chronicles another fan's page , and a page translated into English from French . There is also a list on Ellis Peters. Cadfael is the lead character in a series of books by Ellis Peters. He is a Welshman, now in his 60s, and a Brother in the monastery of Saints Peter and Paul, in Shrewsbury, England. The time is the 1100s, while Stephen and Maud are contending for the throne of England. Cadfael is now a brother, but he has been in the world- he spent 15 (or so) years in the Mideast, first as a Crusader, then as captain of a fishing boat. While there, he began to learn about gardening and herbs, he loved several women and even fathered a son, although he did not know it at the time. Finally, the quiet, the peace of the monastery called to him, and he came home to England and took vows. When the series begins, he has been a brother for about 15 years. His adventures are all centered in life in the Monastery, which is the center of his life, but they also show that he has not turned away completely from the world. There are now 20 novels and a book of short stories written about Cadfael. Ellis Peters died in the autumn/winter of 1995, so there won't be any more Cadfael stories. Many mystery readers everywhere mourned her passing.

Novelist. Born September 1913 at Horsehay , Shropshire. Her father was a clerk at a local ironworks. Edith attended Dawley Church of England School and the Coalbrookdale High School for Girls. Through her mother, she grew to love the history and countryside of Shropshire, her home for all of her life. Before World War II she worked as a chemist's assistant at Dawley . During this time she started writing seriously for publication while gathering useful information on medicines that she would draw upon later when tackling crime stories. Her first published novel was Hortensius, friend of Nero (1936), a rather dry tale of martyrdom that was not a great success but she persevered and The city lies foursquare (1939) was much more warmly received. During the war she worked in an administrative role with the Women's Royal Navy Service in Liverpool, a relatively brief period away from Shropshire, and for her devotion to duty she received the British Empire Medal. Many more novels appeared at this time, including Ordinary people (1941) and She goes to war (1942), the latter based on her own wartime experiences.

I n twelfth-century England, Cadfael ap Meilyr ap Dafydd soldier, sailor, crusader, lover of women and life exchanged his sword for a cross and entered the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Shrewsbury, where he started his second career: a medieval Sherlock Holmes. Edith Pargeter, in the guise of her nom-de-plume Ellis Peters, brought us the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael from 1977 until her death in 1995, but her life and career were filled with much more. She graced us with her charm, humor, enthusiasm, and love of words. For nearly sixty years she created new people and places which will live on in the hearts and minds of her many fans. It is no small feat to have spent a lifetime creating rather than destroying.
Although I had corresponded with her many times, I first met her in 1990 at a small, elegantly-run hotel tucked away on a side street just yards away from Buckingham Palace. With sparkling eyes and a ready smile, Edith led us on a morning tea discussion that featured helpings of everything from true crimes to the drought in England, from London tourists to U.S. mystery bookstores, from the merchandising of Brother Cadfael to the funeral customs of Jews, Maoris, and every group in between; all served between generous dollops of history and social customs of England, Scotland and Wales.

Murderous Intersections: Genre, Time, Place and Gender
    in Ellis Peters's Cadfael Mysteries
Note. Undergraduate literature seminars produce student essays which are of no use to anybody after they have fulfilled their one and only purpose, the acquisition of credits in the form of a Schein ? Not necessarily. In winter 1996/97, the participants of a seminar on Ellis Peters held in the English Department Faculty of Applied Linguistics and Culture Studies University of Mainz , together wrote an article which was published in the November 1997 issue of Cuadernos de Literatura Inglesa y Norteamericana Susanne Hagemann Cuadernos for permission to reproduce the article in electronic form. Abstract. The essay will examine three of Ellis Peters's Brother Cadfael mysteries, set in the twelfth century, with regard to the interplay of four factors: genre, time, place and gender. It will be argued that these factors are closely related, intersecting in a complex manner. Peters varies the pattern of the classical detective story by adding a medieval setting, a cultural tension between Wales and England, and a love story. It can be shown that her departure from the "Golden Age" pattern is less radical than it might appear at first glance. Her treatment of time, in particular, is clearly governed by genre conventions. Place and gender, interacting with each other as well as with time, support the workings of genre through a discourse which, while seemingly assigning positive roles to women and Celts, in fact proves to be both Anglocentric and androcentric.
