Octavio Paz Octavio Paz Born in Mexico City in 1914; died in 1998. Essayist, poet, diplomat, and cultural historian, Octavio Paz is Mexico's foremost man of letters of the twentieth century. His most famous prose work, El laberinto de la soledad The Labyrinth of Solitude , 1961), explored the complexities of the Mexican psyche. In its unique combination of Indian and European sensibilities, Paz contended, the Mexican consciousness resists both the linguistic hegemony of the Spanish language and the cultural "otherness" of the United States. At the same time, Paz' other essays and poems have explored more universal and international issues of contemporary life, especially questions of psychic alienation and integration. Paz himself has rejected the dreamy lyricism of his earliest work, as in Luna silvestre Sylvan Moon , 1933). Although his early poems were heavily influenced by Surrealism and by Asian philosophy, the history of Paz’ poems is a track of restless formalism, ranging from tight imagistic perceptual moments, as in A la orilla del mundo On the Edge of the World , 1942) and La estación violenta The Violent Season , 1958), to the broader inclusiveness of poems based on Aztec models, to even more humanly universal techniques and themes, as in Blanco White , 1967). In politics, Paz describes himself as a "disillusioned leftist." In the 1930s he fought on the side of the Spanish Republic. As a diplomat in the 1950s, he represented Mexico in several countries, including France, where he became friends with the Surrealists, especially Breton. Paz served also as ambassador to India, although he resigned that position in protest against the Tlatelolco Massacre (in which students were killed by government security forces, shortly before the opening of the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City). Since 1976 Paz has edited the influential magazine

Octavio Paz: Nobel Prize winner, author of The Labyrinth of Solitude and Sor Juana, or, the Traps of Faith, precursor and pathfinder, a guiding light of the Mexican intelligentsia Amherst Scholar Ilan Stavans has been called 'the czar of Latino culture in the United States,' and this elegantly slender, deftly wrought tribute to the Mexican literary titan Octavio Paz more than amply proves why he wears the title. While Stavans's 'meditation' will perhaps resonate most richly with admirers of the late Paz, the book is an illuminating text on more general issues as well, including the evolution of Mexican literature in the 1900s, the cultural role of literary journals, and the purpose of intellectualism in modern society. Washington Post as "one of our foremost cultural critics" and by the New York Times Octavio Paz: A Meditation is a fitting addition to Stavans’s own oeuvre that will stimulate discerning readers.

FRAGMENT OF A TALK ON OCTAVIO PAZ, ANTHROPOLOGY AND THE FUTURE OF POETRY
MEXICAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE OF WASHINGTON D.C.
and THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, OCTOBER, 1999
" . . . now I believe our average poet, if it can survive,  is lucky to be something like a liver fluke progressing through the guts of a sheep."
I take as my text today a passage from Octavio's " Corriente Alterna."
If this is a correct reading, it has deep implications for the future of poetry. I will look at this question in my habitual persona as anthropologist. Be warned, gentle audience, that the social sciences do not often console. I offer a hypothesis in the form of a reduced model of an extremely complex situation: there is no time for more. The reason for a sociological approach? It is nonsense to talk about poetry, as most poets and critics today continue to do, without accounting for the socio-economic context of poetry production and reception.
Second: Those of us who care hear every day of underfed, poverty-stricken, culturally-deprived endangered and oppressed indigenous, "primitive," archaic or traditional peasant peoples, whether in the Americas the Amazon again; among the Maya of Central America; among our own Northern Native Americans or in other continents: in other words genocide and ethnocide. After managing two world wars of unparallelled proportions, our century continues on its merry way with the horrors of Guatemala, Tibet, Kurdistan, Ruanda, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the Congo, Kosovo, Burma, East Timor. The truth is that, whether of the Left or Right politically, elites need land and will kill to get it.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Octavio Paz (1914-1998), Mexican poet and essayist, who in 1990 became the first Mexican writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature. Paz’s poetry captures the nuances of human experience both in the passing moment—“in which the whole being is sculptured and destroyed”—and in the continuity of cyclical and mythic time. His essays explore a variety of subjects, including modern poetic discourse, social philosophy, and the dynamics of Mexico’s cultural and political past and present. When he won the Nobel Prize, he was cited by the selection committee for his “impassioned writing with wide horizons, characterized by sensuous intelligence and humanistic integrity.” Born in Mexico City and educated at the National University of Mexico (now National Autonomous University of Mexico), Paz grew up influenced by his father and grandfather, both of whom were involved with revolutionary regimes in Mexico. Paz founded an avant-garde literary journal when he was 17 years old and published his first book of poetry at age 19—

PHIL PONCE: Octavio Paz, poet, essayist, and political thinker was considered by many to be one of the great writers of the 20th century. In 1990, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first for a writer from Mexico. There he was particularly known for his 1950 essay on the Mexican psyche called "The Labyrinth of Solitude." But he was equally revered as a poet. Here he is in a 1989 Bill Moyers documentary called "The Power of the Word: The Simple Acts of Life." The poem he's reading from is called "Trawl Bridge Street." The other voice you'll hear is his long-time friend and translator, Elliot Weinberger.

He was 84. Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo announced the death on Monday as he was returning from the Summit of the Americas in Chile. "This is an irreplaceable loss for contemporary thought and culture not just for Latin America but for the entire world," Zedillo was quoted as saying by the government news agency Notimex. Zedillo did not give a cause of death or say when Paz died. Last year, Paz said that he was suffering from a disease that was "long and wretched," but did not elaborate. Paz's writings ranged far beyond his native land in their subject matter and reflected the cultural influences of his many years abroad. His output was prolific more than 40 volumes of poetry and essays, many translated into dozens of languages.
In awarding him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990, the Swedish Academy of Letters hailed Paz for "impassioned writing with wide horizons, characterized by sensuous intelligence and humanistic integrity." The academy also quoted one of Paz's poems as his literary credo:

    • "His manner is relaxed a ruse that draws the reader, unsuspecting, into concentrated thought on ideas that are subtle and demanding. Memorably observed with all the eloquence and insight you would suppose, this is recognisably the work of a great poet. Yet these skills are married to political sophistication and sustained analytic power a rare enough combination." - The Economist
    • "(A)n urbanely informal yet highly informative look at the history and culture of that ancient, multifarious land. Written with Paz's hallmark erudition and sophistication, it also displays his remarkable gift for making complicated things accessibly clear, without oversimplifying or cheapening them. (...) A sympathetic, often admiring, student of Indian culture, Paz does not hesitate to point out its limitations, weaknesses, and besetting problems." -

My instep arch not only keeps the ache, It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round. I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend. (Poetry 68-69) The "creaking room," "clomping here" and "clomping off," shifting log, and "roar / Of trees and crack of branches" in "An Old Man's Winter Night" demonstrate similarly Frost's acute sense of the physical life around him (Poetry 108), and the robust immediacy of imagery in "Birches" reflects the poet's grounding in primary experience, in a world "Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs / Broken across it, and one eye is weeping / From a twig's having lashed across it open." As in "After Apple-Picking," however, the speaker of "Birches" wants both access to heaven and contact with earth:
