Jeremiahs and grand expectations
By James T. Patterson
James T. Patterson, professor of history at Brown University, is the author of Grand Expectations: The United States, 1945-1974 (Oxford University Press, 1996).
"Grandgrandioseexpectations about the economy are but the most obvious of the dazzling high hopes that have blinded many Americans to the limits of progress in our times. A better understanding of the historical background to these expectations might muzzle some of the Jeremiahs and help us look for more realistic goals."
o listen to the jeremiads of many politicians, journalists and others these days is to conclude that the United States is drifting toward disaster. Pundits bewail corporate downsizing, popular noninvolvement in politics and "community disengagement" of all kinds. While doom-saying of this nature is hardly new in our history - we appear to have a special talent for it - it has sounded particularly mournful in recent years. A chorus of so many voices, however cacophonous, will occasionally happen on the right notes. So with our contemporary Jeremiahs. Some of their laments wake us up and alert us to serious social, economic and political problems. We would do well, however, to bring more historical perspective to our perception of these problems. What we must really face today, as in the past 25 or 30 years, is not the approach of doom but the fallout from dangerously grand expectations. Since the 1960s we have too often imagined that we can do it all, that there are no limits to the health, wealth and happiness that we can achieve. Until we come down to earth, we will hear ever more about doom and Armageddon.

The deadline to apply has passed. Winners will be announced on, or around, March 15th, 2008. Dear PageTurner nominees and nominators, In the wake of 2005's success, we were expecting the PageTurner awards to gain more interest and involvement from people around the country this year. We were not, however, quite expecting the thousands of qualified nominations that came in. This is to say, we're a little overwhelmed. As you know, it was our intention to announce the winners of the awards and the accompanying $500,000 in November but, in order properly and fairly consider all the fine nominations, the counsel and I have decided that we need to postpone the announcements until after November. Thank you,

In the book world, being popular does not necessarily make you great. But if it were, and if it did, then the man sitting across the table from me in a canary-yellow mansion in Palm Beach, Fla., would be president-for-life of the literary universe, and Philip Roth would be a comptroller in North Dakota.

He is the author of 34 books, the last 18 of which have gone to No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list. All told he's sold about 100 million copies; last year they earned him something on the order of $40 million. At 58, Patterson puts out four or five books annually: mysteries, thrillers, romance novels, fantasyhe takes all comers. He's already got one out in 2006, The 5th Horseman, and it's only March. Patterson is the world's greatest best-seller factory, and depending on how you look at it, he's either a damn good writer or the Beast of the coming literary apocalypse. When the apocalypse arrives, at least he'll be comfortable. Patterson spends most of the year in Palm Beach, three blocks from a world-class golf course. His backyard is the Intracoastal Waterway. Sitting in his airy, wood-paneled office, surrounded by about a dozen neat stacks of paper representing works in progress, he's amiable, chatty and deeply unpretentioushe refers to his writing as "scribbling." But it's at least a bit of a conhe's read practically everything, and he gets a sly kick out of reminding you of that. He references both Ibsen and Crichton, Joan Didion and Jean Genet. Before I arrived, just as a courtesy, he read my book.

I fear she was worrying that I was equating not spending on books with some sort of personal failure, but I think the article was merely noticing the fact that Americans are spending less and less on books, and taking that as a symptom of how books are becoming less and less popular.
