Background information, Questions for Reading , and further resources
After switching plans again and deciding to become a poet, Pasternak became an active member of "Centrifuge," a group associated with Futurism. He particularly admired the slightly younger Mayakovsky and considered the title of his first published collection, Twin in the Clouds (Bliznets v tuchakh, 1914), too derivative of Mayakovsky's long poem A Cloud in Trousers (Oblako v shtanakh, 1915). Pasternak gradually gained self- confidence, and after the Revolution, with the 1922 publication of his 1917 poems in My Sister Life , he became generally recognized as one of the most important poets of the new Soviet Union. In the 1920s he wrote experimental Modernist prose (such as Liuvers's Childhood ), a great deal of lyric poetry largely inspired by romantic love, and several longer narrative poems on revolutionary themes, struggling to find new genres better suited to the era. His family emigrated, but in 1922 he married the artist Evgeniia Lurie and decided to remain in the Soviet Union. (He married twice and had one son in each marriage.) Doctor Zhivago Doctor Zhivago Doctor Zhivago was not published in the Soviet Union until 1988, in

A Garden in the Pocket Book: A garden carried in the pocket- Arabian Proverb
in Fiction History Romance
I broke the cardinal rule and watched the movie before I read the book. Even though this happened I still always wanted to read the book and I am glad I did. The book is similar to the movie but very different, for example the book is no where near as tragically romantic as the movie. Also the description of Lara (the main female character) is nothing like Julie Christie. This being said the book was a snapshot into Russian life and socialist history that is not even touched upon in the movie. Doctor Zhivago follows the life of Yurii Zhivago. Orphaned at a young age he moves to Moscow with distant relatives to pursue a doctor career and a hobby in poetry. With a life that seems planned out from when we met his wife, things take monstrous turns. With the tumultuous time of the Russian revolution Yurii is stolen from the ones he loves and flung into the arms of another. This book is romantic but not a typical romance and not at all like the one portrayed in the movie. Yurii is an interesting character. I wouldn’t say he is likeable. At times he is opinionated, obnoxious and at the same time compassionate. I am still annoyed and feel somewhat betrayed by the events of his later life. I sympathise with his wife (maybe it is just the female bond) but I am unsure how to take Lara. She is described as breathtakingly beautiful, but is that a reason to forgive her, her sins? I do feel for her in the beginning of the story where she was stripped of her childhood, this may account for complications in the future.

December 18, 2006 An Introduction to Boris Pasternak Eddie will be here this evening to start December's discussion of Doctor Zhivago . In the meantime, I've gathered some background information on Boris Pasternak as an introduction. Wikipedia: "Doctor Zhivago (novel)" Although Wikipedia is notoriously bad at qualitative content, it's generally the first place you're led when doing an Internet search for information. The article contains very little regarding Pasternak and the novel itself, but it makes up for it in coverage of film, television, and theatrical adaptations. Regarding article info about the novel, I zeroed in on the following sentence: "Yuri must witness cannibalism, dismemberment, and other horrors suffered by the innocent civilian population during the turmoil." There were horrors, yes, but I'm pretty sure cannibalism was mentioned in only one sentence and the dismemberment took place in one scene of one chapter. And Dr. Z didn't actually witness either; he saw the aftermath. Coincidentally

'Donald Davie and Boris Pasternak: Essex and Russia' Angela Livingstone
Louisa Puller, 'St. Bartholomew's Church, Orford, from the North-West', 1942. Museum no. E.2140-1949 (click image for larger version) What this note is about is his 1969 book Essex Poems. It especially concerns the poems in that volume which are about places, and, more especially, the ones concerning places in or near Essex; many refer to other places and some of these will be mentioned too, since all appear under the title Essex Poems - all, that is, were written while their author lived in this county. Because of my special interest and my work with him, I concentrate on the connection between those poems and Boris Pasternak, the greatest Russian poet of the twentieth century (though mainly known in the West for his one novel, Doctor Zhivago) and of very great importance to Donald Davie. The poems I have in mind call for the remembering, or the making, of an idiosyncratic mental map. The map starts at Holland-on-Sea, moves south to 'the Sokens' -Thorpe and Kirby, north to Orford (still on the East Anglian coast), slightly inland to Tunstall, further inland to Ely in Cambridgeshire, then, after indicating far-off Barnsley and Stratford-on-Avon, leapfrogs all the way to Moscow, marginally taking in Marburg (in Germany) where the young Muscovite Pasternak, temporarily living there as a student, started 'fundamentally writing poetry'. As Pasternak later recollected, that first writing of his was 'about the sea, about the dawn, about the southern rain, about the coal of the Harz', about, that is to say, whatever was there around him, rather as Donald Davie, temporarily living in Essex, looked round him and wrote about those near-at-hand local places - very often with Pasternak in mind.

Book Review: Lazar Fleishman, Boris Pasternak: The Poet and His Politics

By: Shannon Meyerhoff, 2005
In Boris Pasternak: The Poet and His Politic, Boris Pasternak Fleishman refers to Pasternak as proof of the tenacity of art to endure even through difficult social situations, such as severe censorship. For this reason, Fleishman focuses on the person of Boris Pasternak and not his artistic works. Although Doctor Zhivago In perceiving Pasternak as a nonconformist, two questions must be raised: if a person is a nonconformer, does that automatically make him a dissenter? Also, is a person a nonconformer and/or a dissenter if he is not consciously breaking with custom, but is merely expressing himself apolitically? Fleishman does not answer these questions directly. He does suggest, though, that although Pasternak was generally considered a dissenter, and certainly a nonconformist, he did not consider himself a dissenter, and did not generally act with political motivations.
