    Boris Leonidovich Pasternak – Renowned Author of Doctor Zhivago
    Boris Leonidovich Pasternak was born in Moscow on 10 February 1890, to a talented father who was an artist and a mother who was a celebrated concert pianist . His father, Osipovich Pasternak was not only a professor, teaching at the Moscow School of Painting , but was also responsible for the illustrations that can be seen in many of Tolstoy’s books When she wasn’t entertaining concert audiences as a musician , his mother Rosa Kaufman was entertaining famed guests that included Tolstoy, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Rainer Maria Rilke Leonid. Surrounded by so much talent and by gifted people, it was no surprise that Boris Pasternak would grow up to be the most influential writer in the history of Russia Aleksandr Scriabin , a frequent visitor to the Pasternak household, inspired Boris to try his hand in the musical arts. However, Pasternak realized that music was not his dream and turned his attention to literature in 1912. Professor Herman Cohen took Boris Pasternak under his wing while he studied at the German Marburg University between the years 1913 to 1914. In 1914, Pasternak released his first poetry collection called 'Bliznets V Tuchakn'. He followed by writing works such as 'My Sister Life', 'Over the Barriers', 'The Childhood of Luvers', 'Safe Conduct' and 'I Remember'. Pasternak entered into a short-lived marriage to Egeniia Valdimirovna Lourie between 1922 and 1931, from which a son was born. In 1934, he remarried Zinaida Nikolaevna Neigauz.

    The Poet and His Politics
    Lazar Fleishman
      Boris Pasternak has generally been regarded as an artist who was indifferent to the literary and political storms of his time. Lazar Fleishman gives the great writer's life a new perspective. He shows that Pasternak's entire literary career should be regarded as a complex and passionate response to constant changes in Russian cultural and social life. Drawing on a vast array of sources, Fleishman's chronicle encompasses both the familiar and the little-known aspects of the poet's life and work. He describes the formative role played by Pasternak's father, a prominent Russian painter, and the intellectual endeavors of the young man before his literary debut. He explores the intricate relations of Pasternak to the main movements of literary modernism, including symbolism and futurism. Particularly informative are the chapters devoted to the postrevolutionary years. Fleishman untangles the poet's contacts with leading political figures (Stalin, Trotsky, Bukharin) and fellow writers (Gorky, Mayakovsky, Tsvetaeva, Akhmatova, Mandelshtam), and examines his changes in fortune during the purges and World War II. He shows how Pasternak was perceived by Western contemporaries and how significant their moral support was for him during the darkest years of Stalin's regime. He provides explanations for the Christian themes in Pasternak's later work, as well as the poet's peculiar view of Jewry. Finally, Fleishman recreates the vicissitudes of the publication of

  • Pasternak, Boris 1890–1960
    Pasternak was a Russian poet, novelist, dramatist, essayist, translator, and autobiographer. Although Pasternak is best known in America as the author of the novel Dr. Zhivago , he is primarily recognized in Europe as a poet. There is a trace of mystical Christianity akin to that of Dostoevsky running through his work. His poetry has been praised for its dense imagery, highly personal nature, and its complex, yet close-knit, structure. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958, which he declined under political pressure. (See also CLC , Vols. 7, 10.)

In the 20 years before World War I, Pasternak developed into one of the most representative of Russian artists, painting in the typical Russian palette, which tends to emphasize a sort of oriental drug coloring of dusty blues and darkish reds. The 26 oil, tempera and watercolor paintings in the Munich show demonstrate that, though influenced by the early impressionists, his style could scarcely be called modern. He scorned his fellow Russian, Kandinsky, the first major abstractionist. In 1914, at the beginning of World War I, Pasternak drew a war poster showing a wounded soldier, which became immensely popular even though the Czar criticized it on the ground that it aroused pity rather than admiration for bravery. Four years later the Soviet government used the same poster as anti-war propaganda. tiiQuigoWriteAd(755769, 1290655, 600, 240, -1);
