High Profile (Jesse Stone) by Robert B. Parker
A well-known radio figure / political commentator is found hanged and shot in Paradise, Mass. Police chief Jesse Stone of course investigates. There's an abundance of ex-wives to talk to as well as a bodyguard and some media figures. In a subplot Jesse Stone asks Parker's other series character Sunny Randall to bodyguard his own ex-wife, Jenn who says she's been raped and now stalked.
Jesse has to confront the fact he just can't seem to get himself separated from his ex, a problem Sunny seems to share. A problem that hinders their relationship.
Parker shows some pretty good writing when he gets into Jesse's head and he manages to brilliantly portray his agression and despair. A much more flawed character than Spenser it makes the story less 'standard' than the Spenser ones. I still love the Spenser novels the most for sheer fun but the Jesse Stone series is proving to be a better one in quality.

Edgar winner Robert B. Parker (of the Spenser, Sunny Randall , and Jesse Stone mystery series) has set his first novel for young readers in the immediate post-World War II era, a time which mirrors the forces which eighth grader Bobby Murphy feels moving within his own life. In 1946 America is on the brink of major transition, as the country shifts from wartime frugality to major consumerism. Jackie Robinson is being groomed to be the first Black major league baseball player, white supremacists are organizing against the changes that returning minority soldiers expect, and women, important players in the wartime job market, are conflicted about their postwar roles. Into this setting Parker puts young Bobby, who has a growing awareness of both girls and what it means to be an honorable man.
As school begins, Bobby and his buddies have just organized a basketball team which has named themselves the

Rating: 3.6 Posted: May 12, 2005 By Kevin Forest Moreau As the increasingly execrable Lethal Weapon movies have proven, it's hard to keep the protagonist of a long-running series fresh. Whereas Mel Gibson's Martin Riggs was a sympathetic character in the first film, by the fourth installment he was an unlikable jackass whose once-manic personality had devolved into a penchant for cruel practical jokes designed to humiliate his victims (including his own long-suffering partner).
The prolific Robert B. Parker, who's been writing the Spenser series of detective novels for more than 30 years, has basically stopped trying to keep that titular character "fresh." Spenser hasn't undergone much in the way of growth or development in many years. But Parker does seem cognizant of the fact that you have to at least give the appearance of growth every now and then. So in lieu of further developing Spenser, with Cold Service he does the next best thing: He attempts to humanize, however slightly, Spenser's cold-eyed, contract-killer best friend, Hawk.

I caught up with Mr. Parker before a book signing at Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, California on March 13, 2005. Promised Land Robert B. Parker
Born: 9/17/1932 Springfield Massachusetts USA About the Author
Robert B. Parker is one of contemporary fiction's most popular and most respected detective novelists. Best known for his portrayal of the tough but erudite private investigator Spenser, Parker has written over twenty five novels over the course of his writing career, beginning with 1973's The Godwulf Manuscript. That novel introduced Spenser, who would be featured in over dozens more novels, including God Save The Child (1974), Mortal Stakes (1975), Promised Land (1976) and Sudden Mischief (1998).
Parker worked in advertising before earning his PhD in English and American literature with a dissertation on Chandler, Hammett and MacDonald. He taught for a time at Northeastern University before launching his career as an author, a career that met with success from the very first submission.
Parker's acclaim and his deep background in classic detective literature helped earn him the somewhat unusual commission of completing a Philip Marlowe novel that the great Chandler had left unfinished. The result, the novel Poodle Springs, was adapted into a film by HBO and starred James Caan as the famous detective. Parker also wrote a sequel to Chandler's classic The Big Sleep entitled Perchance to Dream (1991). Robert B. Parker lives with his wife in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Newest novel is SEA CHANGE, a Jesse Stone novel, and COLD SERVICE, a Spencer novel, is now available in paperback. Named grandmaster for lifetime achievement by Mystery Writers of America, Robert B. Parker had already assumed the mantle of the dean of American crime fiction. His novels featuring the wise-cracking, street-smart Boston private-eye Spenser have earned him a devoted following and reams of critical acclaim, typified by R. W. B. Lewis's comment in The New York Times Book Review , "We are witnessing one of the great series in the history of the American detective story." His 26 Spenser novels have sold millions of copies. FAMILY HONOR, his latest novel, was expressly written for Oscar-winning actress Helen Hunt who will play Sunny Randall, his first female protagonist, and also a Boston-based private-eye. Parker's other works include the classic POODLE SPRINGS, a novel completed from an unfinished manuscript begun by the late Raymond Chandler, and PERCHANCE TO DREAM, the sequel to Chandler's THE BIG SLEEP. Ironically, Parker wrote about Chandler in a chapter of his doctoral thesis about the evolution of the American Hero, beginning with the colonial period and ending with the twentieth century mystery writers. As fate would have it, Parker has become one of the best of them: "Robert B. Parker has taken his place beside Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Ross Mac Donald," according to

Robert B. Parker in love
(read freak)
The Spenser series is my favorite though. Those readers of my age (read old)
I just got in a shipment of Spenser paperbacks, so I will be enjoying my spring evenings reading for a while.
The upside is I read very fast. A 300-page novel is a one-evening book for me. I inherited the speed-reading gene from my father.
Swoon.
There is nothing lovelier than a man who loves his wife, and demonstrates it. Truly a rare and lovely thing.
I can live off that moment for a very long time. Posted by Hollee at Monday, April 02, 2007 Labels: James Patterson Janet Evanovich John K. Spicer Jonathan Kellerman ... Home

REFERENCES COLUMNS Mystery General Fiction In 'Double Play', Robert B. Parker pulls a watershed event from history, mixes it with fine-tuned fictional characters, and bathes both in evocative and detailed period atmosphere. The result is a novel where fact and fiction meet and meld into a seamless pas-de-deux that showcases each to optimum advantage. Stepping away from his multiple mystery series characters, Parker writes a story about Joe Burke, a fictional bodyguard for Jackie Robinson, who, in 1947 begins his initial season as the first Negro to play major league baseball. It's an historical event with a gravitas reaching well beyond the confines of the baseball diamond and Parker's story accords it all it deserves - reverence, respect, and accuracy. Part elegy to times past, part ode to the old-fashioned values of decency and duty, fairness and fearlessness, and all hardboiled mystery, 'Double Play' is a sure-fire winner. 'Double Play' is less a story about baseball than it is a story about the racial divides in America in the post-war 40s. Joe Burke, the bodyguard, is physically scarred and mentally battered from serving in battle during World War II. He is a deliberately emotionless white man making his way through the post-war world using the only skill he has yet to acquire, that as a wartime rifleman. Jackie Robinson, highly skilled and highly visible baseball player is personally scarred, most certainly, by the realities of living a black life in a white country. As history bears out, becoming the first Negro player in the Majors will lead to even more scars. Burke and Robinson bond, slowly, through shared experience and shared values. They discover they are more alike than different, more friends than enemies, and that each equally afraid of the darker elements shadowing their world.

The New England setting of his Spenser series remains the same, and the aura of mystery and suspense within its pages is also familiar. What's different is the novel's intended audience - young readers.
EDENVILLE OWLS is a coming-of-age story centering on Bobby Murphy, an intelligent and courageous young man growing up in changing times. World War II has just ended, and when summer vacation comes to a close, Bobby is happy to find out he has a pretty teacher named Miss Claudia Delaney.
After Bobby and his friends - Nick, Billy, Russell and Manny - enter eighth grade, they decide to start their own basketball team, which they call the Edenville Owls. They have no coach, but Bobby has a plan and the Owls are quick and eager learners. As their skills improve and the Owls start winning games, their friendships become stronger. And just as the Owls are challenged on the basketball court, their loyalty to one another is also put to the test.
Another of Bobby's classmates, Joanie Gibson, has been his friend since they were three years old. And Joanie is one of the first girls in eighth grade to develop breasts. At times, Bobby is unsure how to act around her, especially after she invites Nick to a party. Bobby is also confused over his feelings for Miss Delaney; he worries that his thoughts about her are venial sins.
