(Photo by Brian Jolley) October 14, 2007 Robert B. Parker Boston has established a reputation as a good place to set crime stories. What do you like about it so much? What I like about it is I live here and have all my life in and around Massachusetts. I think it makes for a good crime story, because it allows you to describe some interesting stuff: the age, the density, the diversity of character. Actually, I think any big city would do fine. If I lived in Cleveland, I would have set it all in Cleveland. If you weren't writing, what would you be doing? Oh, probably I'd be dead from drink now. God knows what. I used to work. I hated that. I was a technical writer at Raytheon . Was in the advertising department at Prudential Insurance Company. Then I became a professor so I could go back and write. I certainly did. I probably would have built houses. I like to make stuff. I was, in my earlier years, an adequate carpenter. Do you still dabble in it?

Fiona Walker In 2007 Robert B. Parker was given the Gumshoe Award for Lifetime Achievement. Written by Gerald So Not until the summer of my first year in college did I realize how much reading it would take to be a writer. I picked up The Godwulf Manuscript because I recalled TV's Spenser: For Hire was "based on characters created by Robert B. Parker." I was most interested in reading about Hawk, the amoral enforcer vividly portrayed by Avery Brooks, but by the end of the novel I didn't mind that he hadn't appeared at all. By the end of that summer, I had read the first eighteen Spenser novels at the pace of three-a-week. Parker showed me that a single character could be a thinker, a fighter, a lover, a gourmet cook, and seem no less real. He showed me that the same few words could convey humor, suspense, and literary significance. Born September 17, 1932 and raised in Massachusetts, Robert Brown Parker attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine where he began dating his future wife Joan Hall. Parker served with the U.S. Army in Korea from 1954-56 and worked in tech writing and advertising before completing his Ph.D. in 1970. His dissertation traced the classic hero from the Western frontier to the urban landscapes of Hammett, Chandler, and Macdonald.

Robert B Parker
Robert B. Parker (born September 17, 1932) is an acclaimed American writer of detective fiction. His most famous works are the Spenser series, which achieved a far wider audience due to being dramatized as a television series, Spenser: For Hire, on the ABC network during the late 1980s. His works explore uncomfortable aspects of human nature and incorporate considerable knowledge about the Boston metropolitan area. His sidekick, Hawk, is probably modeled on the sidekick in Book Five of Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene . Artegal, the knight of justice, has a helper named Talus who is an invincible man of iron.

Parker's Spenser series is now among the longest running and most successful in history of crime fiction. At the request of the Chandler estate Parker completed Poodle Springs, a manuscript left unfinished at the time of Chandler's death, and later he wrote a new Philip Marlowe novel Perchance to Dream a sequel to The Long Goodbye. Love him or hate him, everybody who reads detective fiction seems to have an opinion about Robert B. Parker's immensely popular (and in my estimation, highly influential) series about Boston P.I. SPENSER (no first name). Including more than a few less than affectionate nods from some of his fellow detective fiction writers. Sour grapes? The first four books in the series made a strong impression on those hungry for a successor to the Hammett-Chandler-Macdonald trinity. The books are certainly strong, if somewhat derivative, particularly of Chandler. Not surprising, though Parker wrote his doctoral dissertation at Boston U. on the three of them. But they're damn good reads, and introduced an intriguing new gumshoe, one whose success and popularity is still reverberating through the genre. Spenser's a real piece of work. A gourmet cook who pumps iron, an ex-boxer who quotes poetry, a sensitive guy who enjoys getting physical. A guy who goes enjoys a fine gourmet meal and a cold mug of beer , preferably in the same place. And he certainly isn't shy about violence. A true romantic who considers himself a thug for hire and whose closest friend

Parker, Robert B. Potshot . New York: Berkley, 2002. 335pp.
Robert B. Parker's Spenser character has always been one of my favourite private eyes. It's a popular series and Parker has contributed to it very prolifically, with 33 novels since 1973 and at least one per year since 1981. It's probably unavoidable that such a long series would have its ups and downs, good, bad and indifferent books interspersed over the years. And this is the case, with this series probably a bit harder hit than some. Certainly, it's been a very long time since a truly great one has been published, one to stand with Looking for Rachel Wallace . On the other hand, there has hardly been any true stinkers either, with most being at least readable and entertaining. I think that one of Parker's secrets in this has been to keep the novels short they never have a chance to really get on your nerves before they're done. And certainly, the worst of the Spenser novels have qualities that can annoy. The line between confident and smug; witty and arrogant; thematic and repetitive; loose and pointless plotting is all very thin, one Parker balances on in all the Spensers.

Robert B. Parker
Robert B. Parker The New York Times Book Review Spenser novel, and Death in Paradise , his third Jesse Stone novel. His first western, was published in 2001. Parker's other works include the classic Poodle Springs , a novel completed from an unfinished manuscript begun by the late Raymond Chandler, and Perchance To Dream , the sequel to Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep The Boston Globe Born and raised in Massachusetts, Parker attended Colby College in Maine, serves with the Army in Korea, and then completed a Ph.D. in English at Boston University. He married his wife Joan in 1956; they raised two sons, David and Daniel. Together the Parkers founded Pearl Productions, a Boston-based independent film company named after their short-haired pointer, Pearl, who has also been featured in Parker's last few novels. He and Joan now live in the Boston area. Parker began writing his Spenser novels in 1971 while teaching at Boston's Northeastern University. Little did he suspect then that his witty, literate prose and psychological insights would make him keeper-of-the-flame of America's rich tradition of detective fiction. Parker's fictional Spenser inspired the ABC-TV series Spenser: For Hire . More recently, the Spenser novels

American novelist. Parker's crime fiction places him as a prominent contemporary author within the hard-boiled tradition of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross Macdonald. His best known works form a series consisting of nine novels, beginning with The Godwulf Manuscript (1973), and featuring Spenser, a tough but compassionate private-eye trained not only in espionage but also in gourmet cooking, physical fitness, and literature. One of Spenser's most endearing qualities is his sometimes self-depreciating but always witty sense of humor. Parker wrote his dissertation on Hammett, Chandler, and Macdonald and although he knows the private eye tradition well, his success is largely based on the contemporary tone he maintains while remaining true to the conventions of the genre. Along with the standard element of suspense, Parker's emphasis lies in character development, through dialogue as much as through action, and the incorporation of social themes, most notably the distortion of the American dream. Promised Land (1977), the fourth Spenser novel, was awarded the Edgar Allan Poe Award. Ironically, some critics feel this is one of his weaker works. For example, David Geherin, who acknowledges Parker's usual strength in characterization and dialogue, finds "an overemphasis on character analysis and an excessive talkiness that upsets the novelistic balance in
