For this new twenty-first-century edition, devoted admirers can be sure to find their favorite verse and stories. But a variety of fresh material has also been added to create a fuller, more authentic picture of her life's work. There are some stories new to the Portable, "Such a Pretty Little Picture," along with a selection of articles written for such disparate publications as Vogue McCall's House and Garden , and New Masses . Two of these pieces concern home decorating, a subject not usually associated with Mrs. Parker. At the heart of her serious work lies her political writings-racial, labor, international-and so "Soldiers of the Republic" is joined by reprints of "Not Enough" and "Sophisticated Poetry-And the Hell With It," both of which first appeared in New Masses . "A Dorothy Parker Sampler" blends the sublime and the silly with the terrifying, a sort of tasting menu of verse, stories, essays, political journalism, a speech on writing, plus a catchy off-the-cuff rhyme she never thought to write down.

(Born Dorothy Rothschild; also wrote under the pseudonym Constant Reader) American short story writer, poet, critic, playwright, and screenwriter. The following entry provides criticism on Parker's works from 1993 through 2000. For criticism prior to 1993, see CLC, Volumes 15 and 68.
    INTRODUCTION
In the 1920s and 1930s Parker emerged as a literary celebrity whose often-quoted witticisms were as well known as her short fiction and light verse. In her stories she examined the social mores of intellectual middle-class Manhattanites, specializing in bitterly cynical portrayals of unhappy love affairs. Parker regarded herself as a social satirist rather than a humorist, and critics note that she wrote from a liberal sensibility, alternating between outrage and sentimentality. While she used her sardonic wit to attack hypocrisy and intolerance, she was generous in her sympathy toward victims of sexual, racial, and economic oppression.
    Biographical Information
Parker was born on August 22, 1893, and raised in New York City, the fourth child of a wealthy Jewish garment manufacturer and his Protestant wife, who died soon after Dorothy's birth. She attended a finishing school and convent academy before leaving home, determined to support herself with a literary career. In 1916 she joined the staff of

The minute I joined the Short Story Reading Challenge, I knew I wanted to read some Dorothy Parker. My introduction to Parker came in college in a literature class. We were assigned at various points two short stories. One was "Telephone Call" and the second was "The Waltz." These two remain my favorite of the ones I've read, but I would still recommend this whole collection. It contains 24 short stories by Dorothy Parker. These stories were originally published in 1939 under the title Here Lies
What I love about Parker is how she portrays humanitythe good, the bad, the ugly. She captures nuances of humanity both personal and social. (Whether she's documenting the tortured, lonely soul or capturing the hidden layers of a relationship between two friends or two lovers or even the strain of family life.) The stories often contain commentary on social aspects of liferace, class, sex, etc.
Short stories include: "Arrangement in Black and White," "The Sexes," "The Wonderful Old Gentleman," "A Telephone Call," "Here We Are," "Lady With A Lamp," "Too Bad," "Mr. Durant," "Just A Little One," "Horsie," "Clothe the Naked," "The Waltz," "Little Curtis," "The Little Hours," "Big Blonde," "From the Diary of A New York Lady," "Soldiers of the Republic," "Dusk Before Fireworks," "New York to Detroit," "Glory in the Daytime," "The Last Tea," "Sentiment," "You Were Perfectly Fine," and "The Custard Heart."

Say my love is easy had, Say I'm bitten raw with pride, Say I am too often sad - Still behold me at your side. Say I'm neither brave nor young, Say I woo and coddle care, Say the devil touched my tounge - Still you have my heart to wear. But say my verses do not scan, And I'll get me another man!
    A Very Short Song
Once, when I was young and true, Someone left me sad - Broke my brittle heart in two; And that is very bad. Love is for unlucky folk, Love is but a curse. Once there was a heart I broke; And that, I think, is worse.
    Unfortunate Coincidence
By the time you swear you're his, Shivering and sighing, And he vows his passion is Infinite, undying - Lady make a note of this: One of you is lying.
    Men
They hail you as their morning star Because you are the way you are. If you return the sentiment, They'll try to make you different; And once they have you, safe and sound, They want to change you all around. Your moods and ways they put a curse on; They'd make of you another person. They cannot let you go your gait; They influence and educate. They'd alter all that they admired. They make me sick, they make me tired.
General Review of the Sex Situation
Woman wants monogamy; Man delights in novelty. Love is a woman's moon and sun; Man has other forms of fun. Woman lives but in her lord; Count to ten, and a man is bored. With this the gist and sum of it, What earthly good can come of it?

Dorothy Parker was an American poet and critic of the mid-20th century, famous for her sardonic wit and quotable one-liners like "Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses." Parker wrote light verse and epigrams while working for magazines in New York, starting with Vanity Fair in 1917. Later she wrote for The New Yorker Life and others, contributing book and play reviews and earning a reputation as a sharp-tongued critic. Parker was a member of the Algonquin Round Table (an informal literary gathering at New York's Algonquin Hotel in the 1920s that included her colleague Robert Benchley ), and her witty anecdotes and literary insight made her a star of New York's high society. Time magazine called Parker "the tongue heard 'round the world," and she is the source of many famous comic lines, including her comment on a Katharine Hepburn performance: "She runs the gamut of emotions from A to B." Parker also hobnobbed with celebrities in California, where she lived while writing on scripts for films including

(But, alas, we never do.) Dorothy Parker Dorothy Parker is required reading if you're an etymology major. Her poetry betrays all words' most intimate secretstheir contours and nuances and especially their history. It takes an uncommon amount of information and arrogance to play on and with words as she does. Like Oscar Wilde, she mounts the delightful spectacle of a first-rate mind squandering itself on wit. Materials required: A French cigarette, an ivory cigarette holder. Cloche optional. You cannot read Dorothy Parker properly without melodramatizing yourself. The first three lines should be read gaily, and the last line must absolutely be read in a sarcastic contralto, with eyebrows arched, rolling the r’s in Balkan fashion. She is playing in a sophisticated manner on reader expectations concerning ballad stanza (it is used for simple, sad, sentimental occasions). Comment

Once challenged to construct a sentence with the word "horticulture," she reportedly responded without hesitation, "You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think." Little familiar with her work aside from the opening anecdote, I determined that I would become better acquainted upon seeing The Best of Dorothy Parker in a catalog. Having ready access to bookstores, libraries, and online retailers, I have infrequent need for catalogs. Nevertheless, that's how the Folio Society keeps its members abreast of its current releases. The Folio Society edition (not for sale except directly from the Society or a used bookseller) is, of course, beautifully bound and typeset, coming complete with a few illustrations. While these are in fact secondary issues, proper handling of these details does in fact greatly enhance the
