  • Dorothy Parker "Arrangement In Black And White" American critic, satirical poet, and short-story writer Dorothy Parker (1893 - 1967) is remembered as much for her flashing verbal exchanges and malicious wit as for the disenchanted stories and sketches in which she revealed her underlying pessimism. Starting her career as Vanity Fair's drama critic and continuing as the New Yorker's theater and book reviewer, Parker enhanced her legend in the 1920s and early 1930s through membership in the Algonquin Hotel's celebrated Round Table. Print story E-mail story Backflip this story to find it again Parker published her first light verse in "Enough Rope" (1927) and "Death and Taxes" (1931), volumes marked by an elegant economy of expression, sophisticated cynicism, and irony. These were followed by the short-story collections "Laments for the Living" (1930) and "After Such Pleasures" (1933), containing her single most famous story, "Big Blonde." Parker scripted films in Hollywood from 1933 to 1938 and in 1937 covered the Spanish Civil War for the New Masses.

A Mash Note to Crockett Johnson
    Dorothy Parker
This letter was first published in PM on October 3, 1943, when Barnaby the first collection of the comic appeared. It was reprinted as the introduction to Barnaby #4 : Mr. O'Malley Goes for the Gold (Ballantine Books, 1986), and is often quoted. I have reproduced it in its entirety because, although it is very frequently cited, copies of it are hard to find. To my knowledge, the complete text of the letter can be found only in Barnaby #4 (out of print) and on page 16 of PM , October 3, 1943 (on microfilm).
I cannot write a review of Crockett Johnson's book of Barnaby. I have tried and tried, but it never comes out a book review. It is always a valentine for Mr. Johnson.
That is, I had no delight and no enjoyment and no love until Barnaby came. I suppose you must do it this way; I suppose you must file Barnaby under comic strips, because his biography runs along in strip form in a newspaper. I bow to convention in the matter. But, privately, if the adventures of Barnaby constitute a comic strip, then so do those of Huckleberry Finn.
I think, and I am trying to talk calmly, that Barnaby and his friends and oppressors are the most important additions to American arts and letters in Lord knows how many years. I know that they are the most important additions to my heart. I love Barnaby, I love little Jane, I love Gus, the Ghost, I hate and admire and envy Mr. O'Malley, above all I love Gorgon, the dog.

Pretty, petite Dorothy Parker, a drama critic for Vanity Fair , did not look poisonous. But at the Round Table, she was the acknowledged master of the put-down. "Age before beauty," Clare Boothe Luce once remarked as she invited Parker to proceed her; "pearls before swine," the latter supposedly retorted as she swept through the doorway. Alexander Woollcott called her an odd "combination of Little Nell and Lady Macbeth." Although Parker's acerbic reviews soon cost her her job, her short stories, volumes of light verse, and New Yorker book reviews established her reputation as the wittiest woman in the country. Not far beneath this glittering celebrity was a depressed and nearly suicidal alcoholic who arrived at Algonquin lunches with a hangover that she insisted "ought to be in the Smithsonian under glass." With relatively little distortion, caricaturist Peggy Bacon achieved a haunted look that hints at Parker's decadent behavior but also her alert intelligence and vulnerability. R obert Sherwood, reviewing cowboy hero Tom Mix: "They say he rides as if he’s part of the horse, but they don’t say which part." Dorothy Parker: "That woman speaks eighteen languages and can’t say ‘no’ in any of them." George S. Kaufman: Once when asked by a press agent, "How do I get my leading lady’s name into your newspaper?" Kaufman replied, "Shoot her." Round Tabler Edna Ferber, who called them "The Poison Squad," wrote, "They were actually merciless if they disapproved. I have never encountered a more hard-bitten crew. But if they liked what you had done, they did say so publicly and whole-heartedly." Their standards were high, their vocabulary fluent, fresh, astringent, and very, very tough. Both casual and incisive, they had a certain terrible integrity about their work and boundless ambition. Some of the most notable members of the Round Table came together to work on significant collaborative projects. George Kaufman teamed up with Edna Ferber and Marc Connelly on some of his best stage comedies, including DULCY and THE ROYAL FAMILY. Harold Ross of THE NEW YORKER hired both Dorothy Parker as a book reviewer and Robert Benchley as a drama critic. As America entered the Depression and the more somber decade of the 1930s, the bonds that had held the group together loosened; many members moved to Hollywood or on to other interests. "It didn’t end, it just sort of faded," recalled Marc Connelly. A decade after it began, the Algonquin Round Table was over. Not forgotten, the Round Table remains one of the great examples of an American artists’ community and the effects it can have on its time.
