"Haunted"
(Reviewed by Cindy Lynn Speer SEP 5, 2005) She said, "I was a victim of myself." Comparisons between this book and The Canterbury Tales or The Decameron We never know their names so much as we know who they are, thanks to the labels they give each other in lieu of real names. Comrade Snarky, Duke of Vandals, Chef Assassin, Sister Vigilante, Director Denial...all names that hint at the true nature of the person who bears them. The only real names we know are of Mr. Whittier, who arranged for the whole event, and Mrs. Clark, a sad, tragic woman who is his hired help and therefore considered just as evil as he for keeping them locked up, but who may be the greatest victim of all.

Critical Look: Chuck Palahniuk's CHOKE
Posted on Wednesday, January 09, 2008 11:58 PM in News Rants
By Kofi Outlaw
Chuck Palahniuk is one of my favorite writers. The dude is sick, twisted, methodical and rhythmic with his writing style and yet, is somehow brilliant all the same. I was fortunate enough to discover the author before FIGHT CLUB hit screens and made him a literary superstar. I was excited when heard that CHOKE, another popular Palahniuk novel, was bound for theaters. We at Critics Rant were lucky enough to get our hands on some of the first images from the upcoming film.
CHOKE tells the twisted tale of Victor Mancini, a med-school dropout and sex-addict, who spends his days caring for his deranged mother; his afternoons working as a historical re-enactor at a third-rate colonial village; his evenings perusing sex-addict meetings, looking for nymphos to romp with; and evenings making himself choke on food in upscale restaurants, so that he can meet, and sponge off of, the rich patrons who “save” him. When Victor’s mother reveals to him that he maybe a descendent of Jesus Christ, Victor and his buddy Denny, a masturbation addict, set out to finally discover his true origins.
Sam Rockwell will star as Victor Mancini, and is rumored to carry the film pretty well, nailing Palahniuk’s alternating tones of dark humor, and profound moments of self-discovery.

Posted on Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 at 6:06 pm by: Peter Sciretta The two movies I’m most excited to see at Sundance this year are Morgan Spurlock’s Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden and the big screen adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk ’s (author of Fight Club) novel Choke Collider has gotten their hands on eight new production photos from the film. Check out the photos after the jump. As always, click to enlarge. Official Plot Synopsis: Victor Mancini, a sex-addicted med-school dropout, keeps his increasingly deranged mother, Ida, in an expensive private mental hospital by working days as a historical reenactor. At night he runs a scam where he deliberately chokes in upscale restaurants to form parasitic relationships with the wealthy patrons who “save” him. When, in a rare lucid moment, Ida reveals that she has withheld the shocking truth of his father’s identity, Victor must enlist the aid of his best friend, Denny, a recovering chronic masturbator, and his mother’s beautiful attending physician, Dr. Paige Marshall, to solve this mystery before the truth of his possibly divine parentage is lost forever.

SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER The way the waiter told it, Chuck Palahniuk was living in a castle with his girlfriend, a beautiful woman, and only their close, personal friends were invited to visit them there. The waiter knew this because he was one such friend, so close that Palahniuk always consulted with him before putting pen to paper. COMING UP CHUCK PALAHNIUK WHAT: Reads from "Lullaby"
WHEN/WHERE: Thursday, 7 p.m., Bailey/Coy Books, 414 Broadway E., 206-323-8842; Sept. 27, 7 p.m., Roethke Auditorium at Kane Hall, University of Washington, sponsored by University Bookstore, 206-634-3400; Northwest Bookfest, Oct. 19-20, Sand Point. This came as a surprise to Palahniuk, who had never met the waiter before that afternoon. The photographer sitting with Palahniuk mentioned that he had been assigned to photograph Palahniuk, and that was when the waiter began telling stories about his friendship with the popular fiction writer. "He had created this whole relationship between us. He believed it, and he wanted us to believe it, but it just wasn't true," Palahniuk said from his Portland home (which is not a castle, by the way) . "I never introduced myself. I didn't want to embarrass him."

SpikeMagazine.com Book Reviews Interviews Features ... Contact Contributor Jayne Margetts on the writing of Chuck Palahniuk When Bret Easton Ellis unleashed his novel, American Psycho Irvine Welsh carved a new language into our consciousness with his ode to heroin, bleak council estates and a dash of nihilism in 1993 with Trainspotting . Clawing through those initial pages with their illegible scrawl and phonetically terrestrial sounds required the tenacity of a saint. Automated Alice Alice In Wonderland dream, as it was a journey into cyberpunk psychedelia gone haywire in contemporary Manchester. Nymphomation The aforementioned authors have all created a new language, so to speak. Sprouted buzzwords like the historians of old and chronicled the social decay of humanity along the way. Ellis paired savage with savvy; Welsh, lower-class narcissism with narcotic decay; and Noon, corporatisation with soulless human existence. They all hacked into the literary, global cog, shunned the sweet smelling pungency of sentimental verse and offered up their own versions of the darker edge of the sword. Fight Club (1995) struck a subliminal chord. This was an author who was much less concerned with sprouting flowery prose and more preoccupied with stark revelations.

The first thing you notice about Chuck Palahniuk’s latest novel, Haunted, is that there is no novel. Well, at least not in the way that Fight Club, Survivor and Choke are novels. Haunted is in fact a novella about a writer’s retreat that tangos with a collection of short stories and poems about characters with names like Comrade Snarky, Agent Tattletale and Chef Assassin, who refuse to take responsibility for their own actions and lives with hilarious and unpredictable consequences. The result of this mix of narrative styles is Palahniuk’s most literary and intriguing work. The short stories include the infamous masturbation tale, Guts, which comes with the reputation of being the sickest story ever written after several people around the globe fainted at readings. And yet it doesn’t even come close to being the grossest story in Haunted.

By Josh Horowitz CEDAR GROVE, New Jersey Palahniuk is an odd duck. Put it this way, about 30 minutes earlier when I first met the unassuming, 45-year-old "Fight Club" author, he opened our conversation by excitedly telling me how three crew members of the production have recently been victims of biting accidents (two involving dogs, one a disgruntled girlfriend). He says all this through a grin and with such soft-spoken gentleness I easily could have thought he was telling me a bedtime story. This is the writer's fourth day on the set but he's already picked out his favorite moment of the shoot: watching Victor force-feed his mom chocolate pudding. "I watched Sam do that to Anjelica over and over, and every time she would have to spit it all out into a bucket," Palahniuk says. "When she was done, Anjelica came up to me in her hospital gown with pudding all over her face and said, 'This is all your fault.' " There's a strange energy on the set tonight. Power failures on two occasions haven't soured spirits, nor has the increasingly crazy weather, a mix of 90-degree heat (abetted by ruthless humidity) and the occasional thunderstorm. And then there's the bizarre assembly of guests dropping by. "Choke" director Clark Gregg's wife, Jennifer Grey, has been circling the action with their 5-year-old daughter in tow (Grey's father Joel plays the head of a sex addict group in the film). And director David Gordon Green, coming off his own shoot for "The Pineapple Express" (see

Booksense.com Get Vertical! Fight Club was a book that restored my faith in literature. When it first came out in 1996, I was simply blown away by the raw power of Chuck Palahniuk's language, and the way he'd perfectly captured the sarcastic, subversive spirit of the Usenet newsgroups in which I immersed myself back then. (Turned out that Palahniuk had barely any access to the net back then; even at his office, he was trapped behind a corporate firewall.) It turned out to be a brilliant precursor of the end-of-the-millennium anti- corporate-consumerist-culture that would lead to fighting in the streets of Seattle during the WTO conventionheld just weeks after the release of the film adaptation starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. (The main instigators of the street violence, in fact, were anarchists who were based much closer to Palahniuk's home in Portland than to Seattle itself.) What brought on such cynicism and black humor among so much of our generation, I asked him. "I think it's sort of a defense mechanism," he said. "Things are changing so fast, and standards are changing so fast that it takes a twisted sense of humor not to just cry all the time. I mean, you could take it all personally and kill yourself or you could find some way of laughing at it." Since

    Writing Tips by Chuck Palahniuk
I always like hearing what methods people use to get them writing. Here are 13 Writing Tips by Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk
    Here's his first tip.
Number One: Two years ago, when I wrote the first of these essays it was about my "egg timer method" of writing. You never saw that essay, but here's the method: When you don't want to write, set an egg timer for one hour (or half hour) and sit down to write until the timer rings. If you still hate writing, you're free in an hour. But usually, by the time that alarm rings, you'll be so involved in your work, enjoying it so much, you'll keep going. Instead of an egg timer, you can put a load of clothes in the washer or dryer and use them to time your work. Alternating the thoughtful task of writing with the mindless work of laundry or dish washing will give you the breaks you need for new ideas and insights to occur. If you don't know what comes next in the story… clean your toilet. Change the bed sheets. For Christ sakes, dust the computer. A better idea will come.
As always, feel free to email me your ideas on writing and I'll put them up.
