DVD Talk Search: Interview With Fight Club Author Chuck Palahniuk A DVD Talk Interview Interview With Fight Club Author Chuck Palahniuk Chuck Palahniuk is one of those authors that never pulls punches. Instead of running away from chaos and uncomfortable things he explores, prods, and even embraces them. In a market where many authors dream about becoming an Oprah Book Club Book, Chuck writes with the hopes that men will pick up his books and find something that speaks to them. His books move forward at break neck speed with more twists and turns than a mountain road. It's no surprise that Fight Club translated so well onto the screen. We sat down with Chuck in a little diner in Portland, Oregon. When we got there he was hard at work on the latest draft of his upcoming novel. Unassuming and soft spoken, Chuck isn't the kind of person you'd expect to create Fight Club's Tyler Durden or Invisible Monster's half-faced Evie. For the majority of our talk with Chuck Palahniuk we used questions submitted by DVD Talk members.

June 12th, 2007 Chuck Palahniuk rocketed to literary stardom with Fight Club , a debut novel that tapped into the frustrated aggressions of young male readers in the late '90s; when it was adapted into a stylish hit film starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, Palahniuk's place as a cult icon was assured. In the jangly, trivia-focused, anomie-packed novels that have followed ( Survivor Invisible Monsters Lullaby Diary , and more), Palahniuk has gradually evolved as a writer, working away from Fight Club 's jumpy style into a smoother narrative state; meanwhile, he's also published some non-fiction, including the Portland guide

Picture yourself running a literary 'zine, still fanatically reading your favorite authors, continuing to worship the written word, being perceived as a media outlet because you've developed a decent following over the last two years. I am the fanatic. I am the fumbling, blubbering idiot masquerading as a legitimate journalist. I am a publicist's worst nightmare. 05-27-05: Jack Williamson Steps Through 'The Stonehenge Gate'; Cherie Priest Offers a Sumptuous Meal of 'Four and Twenty Blackbirds'; Make Magazine V.02 Old School Ass-Kicking
Stonehenge gate, star gate, no matter what gate you go through, you end up back here on earth. Talk about old school; Jack Williamson published his first story in 1928. And that's why we all want to be writers. We want a job that we enjoy so much that we keep on kicking ass some 77 years after we start. His latest novel is 'The Stonehenge Gate' (Tor / Tom Doherty Associates ; August, 2005 ; $24.95), and I made the mistake of opening it up to page one, well, page eleven really, but didn't come up till chapter two. Williamson has a direct, easy-to-read style that "grabs you" as editors are wont to say.
Some of those places in the universe are the shiny singularity-bound civilizations that are popular these days, pristine and frightening. Others are the filthy primitives, ravaged by war and violence. To my mind, our world slots in the latter category, and I can't imagine that anyone more advanced is going to be happy to see us coming, unless they're hoping to buy low and sell high.

Lullaby
by Chuck Palahniuk
(Jonathan Cape, £10.00, paperback, 272 pages, 5 September 2002; ISBN: 0224063014.)
Chuck Palahniuk's first four novels from the notoriously transgressive Fight Club to the hilariously extreme Choke have all been bizarre. And yet, despite their unlikely characters and entertainingly preposterous plot twists, they have always stayed just this side of possible. With his fifth novel, Lullaby , Palahniuk steps firmly and boldly into the realm of the impossible. Lullaby is a modern-day dark fantasy featuring haunted houses, witches, dangerous spells, pagan rituals, and the like. Independently of each other, Helen Hoover Boyle, a corrupt real-estate agent who deals in haunted houses, and Carl Streator, a journalist assigned to investigate Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, discover that a child's poem is in reality an ancient culling spell, lethal to any to whom it is recited. Joined by the twenty-something Wiccans Mona and Oyster, the forty-something Carl and Helen embark on a cross-country journey to destroy all copies of the book that contains the lethal verse. In the process, the quartet becomes a twisted version of the American nuclear family, where deep-rooted power imbalances create tense and complex conflicts.

T HROUGHOUT Chuck Palahniuk's 2003 author tour, 67 unrelated people fainted while he read his short story "Guts." A few folks actually vomited and went to the hospital. Originally published in Playboy "I think the one thing that sets [the audience] off is they get so disarmed in the first part of the story that once they realize where it's going, they sweat like pigs and they fall down," Palahniuk said over the phone. "It's a joy to watch it." According to Palahniuk, the folks in the audience who passed out during the readings really did indeed pass out. It wasn't a publicity stunt. "It was all real," he said. "Some people sent me their hospital admission forms to get me to sign them and send them back." Palahniuk, who also penned Fight Club Survivor and Lullaby , explained that at Auntie's Bookstore in Spokane, a blood stain on the carpet still exists where someone fainted during the reading and cracked his head open on the wooden bookshelf. "I don't know what it is about that story, but it just knocks 'em over," he quipped.

Chuck Palahniuk found an audience for his writing and social commentary when Fight Club became a defining event for a generation. His books include Survivor Invisible Monsters Choke , and now Lullaby (Doubleday). What made you want to be a writer? Mr. Olsen in the fifth grade made me want to be a writer. He said, "Chuck, you do this really well. And this is much better than setting fires, so keep it up." That made me a writer. How would you describe your writing? On one level my stuff is about me going into the world and picking up what people are talking about and things that are common archetypal issues in the lives of all my friends. I then find some way to portray those and demonstrate them in a story. On another level my stuff is really my stuff.

She Breaks Your Heart
Chuck Palahniuk on Amy Hempel Wednesday, September 18, 2002 - 12:00 am Illustration by Rachel Salomon WHEN YOU STUDY MINIMALISM IN THE NOVELIST Tom Spanbauer's workshop, the first story you read is Amy Hempel's The Harvest . After that, you're ruined. I'm not kidding. You go there, and almost every other book you ever read will suck. All those thick, third-person, plot-driven books torn from the pages of today's news after Amy Hempel, you'll save yourself a lot of time and money. Or not. Every year on my tax return's itemized C schedule, I deduct more money for new copies of Hempel's three books, Reasons To Live At the Gates of the Animal Kingdom and Tumble Home . Every year, I want to share these books. What happens is they never come back. Good books never do. This is why my office shelves are crowded with nonfiction too gross for most people, mostly forensic autopsy textbooks, and a ton of novels I hate. At a bar in New York last year, the literary bar KGB in the East Village, Hempel told me her first book is out of print. The only copy I know of is behind glass in the rare-book room at Powell's Books in Portland, a first-edition hardcover selling for $75 without a signature. I have a rule about meeting the flesh-and-blood version of people whose work I love that rule I'm saving for the end.

After several goes and more than several drinks, it got pretty wacky and when "Fight Club" author Chuck Palahniuk's name got called, somehow the answer got to be "a grilled cheese sandwich being eaten whilst compulsively having sex in an airliner's bathroom as it's crashing into the ocean".
Thankfully the man himself is far more creative and roving spies 'ElectricMaidy and CrimsonKing' attended a book reading by Chuck in Chicago yesterday. He read from a short story and prefaced "Guts" by discussing the status of his novels as movies. Here we go:
    Survivor
Chuck says that it now WILL be made into a film! It sounds like the Paltrow screenplay is out, since he said the "hot duo" behind the upcoming CONSTANTINE want Survivor to be their next project. He did say that they were still seeking the rights to adapt the screenplay, but who knows how long until actual filming begins. Sounds interesting!
    Invisible Monsters
Is supposed to begin production THIS YEAR with Jessica Biel starring in dual roles! This dark story about disfigured and insane supermodels, according to Chuck, is also trying to get either Val Kilmer or Billy Crudup in the male lead.
