  • I think they've always gone on. I've gotten some irate letters from oldsters saying 'We did this in the 1930s. You didn't invent anything.' And I'm like, 'Gramps, you should have put a name on it and sold it, because that’s all I did.'
    • on the creation of Fight Club Interview with Rolling Stone (September 19, 2002) I haven't had a TV in 10 years, and I really don't miss it. 'Cause it's always so much more fun to be with people than it ever was to be with a television.
      • Interview with the San Francisco Bay Guardian (October 30, 2002) The first step — especially for young people with energy and drive and talent, but not money — the first step to controlling your world is to control your culture. To model and demonstrate the kind of world you demand to live in. To write the books. Make the music. Shoot the films. Paint the art. Why have I sold out? You think I'm supposed to grow old, beating some trite old protest drum that people don't hear anymore? Please; protest is now just a backdrop for a Diesel clothing ad in a slick fashion magazine. My goal is to create a metaphor that changes our reality by charming people into considering their world in a different way. It's time for me, at least to be clever and seduce people by entertaining them. I'll never be heard if I'm always ranting and griping.

, Powells.com Chuck Palahniuk's immoderate satires elicit much the same reaction as a Dead Baby joke: readers aren't quite sure if it's okay to laugh. This may help explain Palahniuk's initial problems finding a publisher. As the story goes, when Palahniuk sent his first manuscript to New York, a number of editors personally loved the book but were nevertheless too timid to admit it. They worried that they alone were demented enough to enjoy a book in which Thanksgiving dinner includes a graphic description of felching. The book

  • Cool tidbits about Chuck Palahniuk:
When they were very young, Chuck's parents took he and his sister to see the graves of his grandparents (maternal, I'm assuming) who (whom?) they had never met. When they got there, the kids noticed that the grandparents' names were "Paula" and "Nick". The kids laughed their asses off all the way home. And that's how he pronounces his name: "Paula-Nick". Chuck only started writing in his mid-thirties. In fact, he almost didn't start at all when his first novel Invisible Monsters got rejected due to its content. Chuck's anger over this prompted him to write Fight Club as a big "F- You!" to the publishers. Instead of being offended, however, they published it.

    An Interview with Chuck Palahniuk
Chuck Palahniuk's books are a wicked crossbreed of Charles Bukowski and an over-stimulated librarian. From his first novel, the "cult" book Fight Club onward, Palahniuk's unabashedly harsh and compulsively readable prose has shocked the quite world of literature. Palahniuk's prose style, terse but packed with minute details, has brought new audiences into bookstores, and spawned a legion of committed fans. Palahniuk's latest book is a work of non-fiction called Stranger Than Fiction: True Stories and collects pieces he's written over the years for a variety of magazines and other sources. The book includes interviews with Marilyn Manson and Juliette Lewis, a portrait of the life of a corpse-sniffing dog and the Palahniuk's own quest for Brad Pitt lips. Chuck Palahniuk answered Bookslut's questions via e-mail. A lot of interviews with you seem to focus on the nihilistic views in your books. Does the focus on this aspect of your writing get tiresome? Yeah, a little tiresome. Especially when I secretly know my work is very romantic, and ALWAYS about returning a lonely character to community with other people. There's a BIG difference between "not caring" or being "nihilistic" about a topic and simply not being enrolled by the drama presented by other people. Just because my characters CHOOSE not to react in standard, socially-appropriate ways that does not mean they don't care. They just reject ordinary dramas.

Chuck Palahniuk is a prolific author who explores, in outrageous and comic fashion, America's apparent love of violence. No writer divides critics more sharply. While some view him as a literary nihilista man hell-bent on killing the novel as a reputable art formothers view him as a brilliant social satirist and the most important literary innovator of his generation. Palahniuk (pronounced "PAULA-nick") achieved broad recognition with the publication of "Fight Club" (1996), a bizarre, violent novel about a secret organization of men who engage in bloody fistfights for enjoyment, catharsis, and personal salvation. The club evolves ultimately into a guerilla army that is funded by the sale of soap made from liposuctioned human fat. The cult bestseller was made into a 1999 film starring Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Meat Loaf. Palahniuk, who grew up in a trailer park in rural Washington, wrote the novel while working as documentation specialist and diesel mechanic for a Portland, Oregon truck company, a job he held for 13 years.

Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey
Rant is the latest novel from Chuck Palahniuk, the literary innovator behind Fight Club, Haunted, Diary and Survivor. Rant takes the form of an oral history of Buster "Rant" Casey. A high school rebel who always wins (and a childhood murderer?), Rant Casey escapes from his small hometown of Middleton for the big city. He becomes the leader of an urban demolition derby called Party Crashing. On appointed nights participants recognize one another by such designated car markings as “Just Married” toothpaste graffiti and then stalk and crash into each other. Rant Casey will die a spectacular highway death, after which his friends gather testimony needed to build an oral history of his short, violent life. Their collected anecdotes explore the possibility that his saliva caused a silent urban plague of rabies and that he found a way to escape the prison house of linear time.

This is why I loved the support groups so much. If people thought you were dying, they gave you their full attention. If this might be the last time they saw you, they really saw you. People listened instead of just waiting for their turn to speak. And when they spoke, they weren't telling you a story. When the two of you talked, you were building something, and afterward you were both different than before.
