Introduction
An Introduction to the Society
The society came into being as a direct consequence of the controversy in Thetford in 1963 following the offer of a statue of the town's most famous citizen. Opinion in Thetford concerning Thomas Paine had always been somewhat ambivalent, but the press and radio reports about the row over the statue revealed the extent of the ignorance about Paine's life, habits, work, ideas and actions, an ignorance that led a number of people nationally to urge that a society be established which would endeavour to set the factual record straight concerning him. There was no intention to hero worship Paine, like everyone else he had made mistakes and did things that people objected to, but then who has not? The idea for the formation of the society was given publicity in all national papers, even those with a record of hostility to him, and an ad-hoc committee was formed to organise a public meeting to discuss the formation of a Thomas Paine Society, the South Place Ethical Society in London allowing the free use of their library in Conway Hall, in which to hold the meeting. This was very appropriate as Conway Hall was named after Moncure Conway (1832-1907) the author of one of the most important biographies of Paine.

Thomas Paine (1737-1809) The Pennsylvania Magazine . Among other things, in 1775 he penned his first denunciation of slavery, and often thought of doing a whole book against it. He became friends with others sharing hi s outlooks, including Joel Barlow and the artist Benjamin Rush. By April 1775 the shooting war with Britain had begun at Lexington. As Paine later wrote to Ben Franklin, "I thought it very hard to have the country set on fire about my ears almost the mo ment I got into it" (Aldridge, 1959, 33). Paine readily embraced the cause of liberty, having long detested the nobilities and monarchies of Europe. While Paine early busied himself with a scheme to hide gunpowder shops in private homes, his more import ant work was his initially anonymous authorship of Common Sense . The first vigorously written disavowal of the authority of the King as well as Parliament in the colonies, it claimed that the colonies had reached maturity and should separat e from the parental country. It appeared in January 1776 and sold nearly a half million copies when the colonies contained but three million people. But although Paine himself paid the L 40 for its publication, the royalties were given to the army to bu y mittens for Patriot soldiers. As the most effective propagandist for the Patriot cause, Paine called himself "Cato" when writing The Forester letters against Loyalists, and then his

African Slavery in America (1775)
American opposition to slavery began with the Quakers in the late 17th century, but abolitionism didn't congeal into a movement until master propagandist Tom Paine, himself the son of a Quaker, arrived in America and penned this uncompromising condemnation of the practice. Five weeks after its publication, he helped found the first anti-slavery society in America. An Occasional Letter On The Female Sex (1775)
Early feminism from "Common Sense," which shows that he had plenty of common sense before he became "Common Sense." Common Sense (1776) This is itthe spark that lit the fuse of the American Revolution. With these words, Paine took a wavering people, teetering on the brink of revolution, and encouraged them to embrace the project with enthusiasm. Praised, in similar fashion, by virtually every other important leader of the American Revolution, "Common Sense" became the first bestseller in the nation's history, and Paine donated every penny of the considerable fortune it made to the cause of seeing through the revoluton it ignited. Who was Thomas Paine?
    Common Sense
Of the men who made the American Revolution, none had a more remarkable career or suffering a peculiar fate, than that of Thomas Paine. Paine's wealthy and intellectual freinds of the gentry included that of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Even Paine's antagonist John Adams came from an upper-class famly long established on American soil. Paine's orgins come from the "low-class" of the eighteenth-century England, and he did not arrive untill the very eve of the Revolutionary War.

Tom Paine, the son of a Quaker corset maker, was born in Thetford in Norfolk on 29th January, 1737. After being educated at the local grammar school Paine became an apprentice corset maker in Kent. This was followed by work as an exciseman in Lincolnshire and a school teacher in London
In 1768 Paine moved to Lewes where he was employed as an excise officer. Paine became involved in local politics, serving on the town council and establishing a debating club in a local inn. Paine upset his employers when he demanded a higher salary. Paine was dismissed and he responded by publishing a pamphlet The Case of the Officers of Excise . While in London Paine met Benjamin Franklin who encouraged him to emigrate to America.
Paine settled in Philadelphia where he became a journalist. Paine had several articles published in the Pennsylvania Magazine including one advocating the abolition of slavery. In 1776 he published Common Sense , a pamphlet that attacked the British Monarchy and argued for American independence. During the war with England Tom Paine wrote articles and pamphlets on the superiority of republican democracy over monarchical government and served with Washington's armies. Paine also travelled to France in 1781 to raise money for the American cause.
Paine played no role in American government after independence and in 1787 he returned to Britain. Paine continued to write on political issues and in 1791 published his most influential work
