    Owen, Wilfred
Owen, Wilfred, , English poet, b. Oswestry, Shropshire. He served as a company commander in the Artist's Rifles during World War I and was killed in France on Nov. 4, 1918, one week before the armistice. Owen's poetic theme, the horror and pity of war, is set forth in strong verse that transfigured traditional meters and diction. Nine of these poems are the basis of the text of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem (1962). Although Owen had worked on poems while living in France between 1913 and 1918, he never published. While on sick leave from the front in a Scottish hospital, he met the poet Siegfried

Wilfred Owen Dulce Et Decorum Est Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.
GAS! Gas! Quick, boys! An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And floundering like a man in fire or lime. Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF WILFRED EDWARD SALTER OWEN
Wilfred Edward Salter Owen was born on March 18, 1893, he was the oldest of four children of Tom and Susan Owen. As a young child Wilfred Owen's family experienced financial difficulties which resulted in him having to attend the Birkenhead Insitute and the Technical School of Shrewsbury, not his dream school in Oxford. As a child his faith in religion was very strong, something that he had dearly shared with his mother. This close relationship he had with his religion failed him, though. As he got older his attention was drawn towards poety, in which he held his version of Truth that he could not reconcile with God. Notably known as a war poet, the beginning of war found Owen in France, but as a tutor rather than as a soldier. It was during this time that he met Laurent Tailhade, a poet known in the French Salons. The many aspirations of a young Wilfred Owen to become a renowed poet had grown in his association with the social circles of upper class he longed to be a part of.

Wilfred Owen (1893-1918)
Wilfred Edward Salter Owen, the eldest of four children, was born in Oswestry, Shropshire, where his father was working as a railway clerk. The family soon had to move to Birkenhead, and Wilfred was educated at the independent Birkenhead Institute until 1907, when his father was appointed to a senior post in Shrewsbury. Wilfred took a four-year, free course as a pupil-teacher at the Shrewsbury Technical School, gaining not only a good grounding in French, English literature, the earth sciences and other subjects but also experience of teaching children from very poor homes. Studying Wordsworth and Keats made him long to be a poet, and he started writing verse. He qualified as an elementary school teacher, but career prospects were poor, so he decided to try for a London University external degree, passing the first stage, matriculation, in 1911. Needing time and space to prepare for more exams, he became a temporary assistant to the Vicar of Dunsden, near Reading. His mother had brought him up to be a pious Evangelical, but he lost his faith at Dunsden, returning home early in 1913 with a severe breakdown. Later that year he left home for good, becoming a teacher of English in Bordeaux. He shared the general view in 1914-15 that the war was in a just cause, and in autumn 1915 he returned to England to join the Artists' Rifles, a prestigious officer training unit. In June 1916 he became a second lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment.

Who is Wilfred Owen?
Who is Wilfred Owen? This article will examine the life and poetic works of one of the best War Poets the world has ever known.
Acclaimed as one of the great World War I poets, Wilfred Owen has undoubtedly had more impact on the public conscience of the tragedy of war than any other writer of his generation. Posthumously, the poetry of Owen continues to sell in the hundreds of thousands. The First World War produced many literary works, but while many of his colleagues were writing poetry filled with sarcasm and cynicism at the injustices of war, Owen wrote in a more permanent, meaningful way, depicting the futility of the fighting, the terrible conditions the soldiers had to contend with in the trenches, in a powerful, sometimes understated but always compassionate and disturbing fashion. His poetry has stood the test of time, and this article will examine the life and works of this poet who had tremendous impact on changing the public perceptions of war and on how poetry was subsequently written. He was born on the 18th March 1893 at Plas Wilmot, Oswestry, Shropshire in the UK, the first-born son to Tom and Susan Owen, who went on to have three more children. The family was relatively well off, and at the time of Wilfred's birth were living with his grandfather. When the old man died in 1897, the family moved to Birkenhead near Liverpool and for the next ten years they struggled financially living in the poorest districts of Birkenhead. Moving to Shrewsbury in 1907 was a turning point for the family and especially for young Wilfred. He loved the countryside, enjoying many afternoons exploring the hills and valleys close by. These early images of his childhood in Shrewsbury would feature heavily in his later poetry.

"Greater Love": Wilfred Owen, Keats, and a Tradition of Desire - Critical Essay
Twentieth Century Literature Spring, 2001 by James Najarian Wilfred Owen is still, to some extent, a prisoner of his saintly reputation. Though the most recent biography of Owen, by Helen McPhail, adds helpful maps that delineate Owen's precise movements in battle, the book is thoroughly in the hagiographic tradition. As Samuel Hynes notes, Edmund Blunden's 1931 "Memoir" assembled the saintly, doomed Owen. The memoir is, in Hynes's words, "a classic myth-making text." "It created," Hynes writes, "what Owen himself never hada poetic character of his own" (437).

I just found a marvellous new source for Wilfred Owen's war poetry, thanks to Oxford University. It lets you view multiple manuscript versions of these poems.
And today's poem is...
Insensibility
Happy are men who yet before they are killed
Can let their veins run cold.
Whom no compassion fleers
Or makes their feet
Sore on the alleys cobbled with their brothers.
The front line withers,
But they are troops who fade, not flowers,
For poets' tearful fooling:
Men, gaps for filling: Losses, who might have fought Longer; but no one bothers.
And some cease feeling Even themselves or for themselves. Dullness best solves The tease and doubt of shelling, And Chance's strange arithmetic Comes simpler than the reckoning of their shilling. They keep no check on armies' decimation.

  • Wilfred Owen 1893–1918
(Full name Wilfred Edward Salter Owen) English poet.
    INTRODUCTION
Considered the leading English poet of the First World War, Owen is remembered for realistic poems depicting the horrors of war, which were inspired by his experiences at the Western Front in 1916 and 1917. Owen considered the true subject of his poems to be "the pity of war," and sought to present the grim realities of battle and its effects on the human spirit. His unique voice—less passionate and idealistic than those of other war poets—is complemented by his unusual and experimental technical style. He is recognized as the first English poet to fully achieve pararhyme, in which the rhyme is made through altered vowel sounds. This distinctive technique and the prominent note of social protest in his works influenced many poets of the 1920s and 1930s, most notably W. H. Auden, C. Day Lewis, and Stephen Spender.
    Biographical Information
discharged from the hospital, Owen rejoined his regiment in Scarborough. He returned to the front in early September 1918 and shortly afterwards was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. He was killed in action at the Sambre Canal in northeast France on November 4, 1918—one week before the Armistice. He is buried in Ors, France.
