REFERENCES COLUMNS General Fiction The exception would be when poets come to town. Then their books do end up piled up where I can find them; their appearances bring them into my narrow reading vision. And so the recent Santa Cruz Poetry Festival stuck Alicia Suskin Ostriker's 'No Heaven' right under my nose, in the desk at the front of the store. Hard to miss, that. And that's why we have poetry festivals. Lest we forget, as Rudyard Kipling said. By themselves, the poems are alternately beautiful, startling and perceptive. But reading through the breadth of Ostriker's work in this collection, you will find that her poetry gains momentum, following upon itself with nuanced skill, successive poems building to deliver a message more complex than any single poem. In 'No Heaven' they offer a unity that makes the whole greater than the sum of the parts. The title for the collection comes from the famous John Lennon lyrics, "Imagine there's no heaven..." "My two epigraphs," Ostriker says, "from Lennon and Wallace Stevens, are contrasting. Lennon's 'Imagine' is a kind of anthem of hope, while Stevens' line, 'And hard it is, in spite of blazoned days,' is a reminder of how difficult it is to keep hope alive." Those contrasts carry through the collection and invigorate it.

62. Human-Divine Encounter In Dickinson And The Hebrew Bible
alicia ostriker points out that enclosing Biblical terms like “Peniel” in quotation marks is a favorite device of Dickinson (“Replaying the Bible” 165).

Human-Divine Encounter in Dickinson and the Hebrew Bible
by Richard S. Ellis 1. Introduction The Hebrew Bible and Dickinson wrestle with the same enigma: with what artifices can language portray the unportrayable confrontation of the human and the Divine? Their solutions are strikingly similar. Both articulate the human-Divine encounter in language riddled with paradox, wordplay, and shifts of perspective fluctuating, at times almost instantaneously, between hierarchy and intimacy, transcendence and immanence, abstraction and sensation all of which have the effect of creating multiple, often contradictory interpretations. Such similarities in theme and language use are facets of an intimate relationship between the Hebrew Bible and Dickinson that extends much deeper. As we will see in the context of Dickinson’s poem “A little East of Jordan” (Fr145B), which treats Jacob’s encounter with the unknown adversary at Peniel, reading Dickinson through the lens of the Hebrew Bible gives insights not readily available through the usual lens of the King James Version. These insights illuminate the rest of her work and highlight her profound perception of the relationship between humanity and God, revealing numerous features shared with the Hebrew Bible.

Biographical History
As the winner of the National Book Award for her 1970 novel Them and the recipient of four O. Henry awards and numerous other literary prizes, Joyce Carol Oates is among the most distinguished writers in the United States. In her considerable body of work, she has created an array of male and female protagonists from a diversity of regional, economic, and occupational backgrounds. Poetry, terror and political narcissism
    by Alyssa A. Lappen
    The American Thinker
    March 4, 2005
http://www.americanthinker.com/articles.php?article_id=4299 Poetry is a window on the human soul. But the politics of American poetry, in recent years have veered into more and more radical territory, as an increasing number of poets openly declare their allegiance with ‘Palestine,' and implicitly, with terror. Academics with one foot in Middle Eastern Studies and another in literature and poetry are the prime conduits of this degrading development. A few names that come to mind are Tom Paulin[1], a literature lecturer at Oxford University, former New Jersey poet laureate Amiri Baraka[2], Marylin Hacker[3], and Alicia Ostriker[4] at Rutgers University. A prime example is Ammiel Alcalay, a tenured professor and former chair of Classical, Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures at City University of New York's Queens College[5]. The author, editor or translator of at least nine literary, essay and poetry volumes[6], Alcalay has established himself as a fixture on the college speaking and poetry circuits, both realms that he vigorously exploits to disseminate sharply anti-American, anti-Israel and pro-Palestine views[7]. Born and raised in Boston, Alcalay, 48, is the son of Sephardic Jews from Bosnia[8]. But his family background seems to have taught Alcalay nothing about the deficiencies of previous eras or the evils of communism. Not only does Alcalay seek a return to pre-democratic times[9], he wishes for a revolution such as outlined by French Marxist and anti-colonialist Frantz Fanon (1925-1961), author of

An Annotated Bibliography of Works about Edna St. Vincent Millay, 1974-1993
With Supplement (1912-1973)
compiled by Judith Nierman and John J. Patton 1. Adler, Amy. Rev. of Edna St. Vincent Millay: Poet , by Carolyn Daffron. School Library Journal 36 (Mar. 1990): 243.
While few students are familiar with M's poems, "even fewer understand [their] impact on the political and social structure of her time." Daffron's book will be welcomed by students once they are introduced to it. 2. Agosta, Lucien L. "Millay, Edna St. Vincent." Notable Women in the American Theatre . Ed. Alice M. Robinson, Vera Mowry Roberts, and Milly S. Barranger. New York: Greenwood, 1989. 640-44.
Lists M's contributions to American theater. She "attended at the birth of serious American drama and helped to create an atmosphere in which it could flourish." 3. Alkalay-Gut, Karen. "Poetry by Women in America: Esthetics in Evolution." Canadian Review of American Studies
M is named as being among "the first burst of women poets who wrote as women, from the point of view of women, with the concerns of women." She is among those who had "something to say about being female." Finds that M engages in "hiding" and in "protecting the self," often using a male persona and identifying with a male perspective. 4. Allen, Gilbert. "Millay and Modernism."
