George Orwell (1903 - 1950)
Orwell was a British journalist and author, who wrote two of the most famous novels of the 20th century 'Animal Farm' and 'Nineteen Eighty-Four'. Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair on 25 June 1903 in eastern India, the son of a British colonial civil servant. He was educated in England and, after he left Eton, joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, then a British colony. He resigned in 1927 and decided to become a writer. In 1928 he moved to Paris where lack of success as a writer forced him into a series of menial jobs. He described his experiences in his first book, 'Down and Out in Paris and London', published in 1933 - he took the name George Orwell, shortly before its publication. This was followed by his first novel 'Burmese Days' in 1934. An anarchist in the late 1920s, in the 1930s he began to consider himself a socialist. In 1936 he was commissioned to write an account of poverty among unemployed miners in northern England, which resulted in 'The Road to Wigan Pier' (1937). Late in 1936, Orwell travelled to Spain to fight for the Republicans against Franco's Nationalists. He was forced to flee in fear of his life from Soviet-backed communists who were suppressing revolutionary socialist dissenters. The experience turned him into a lifelong anti-Stalinist.

Eric Blair, was born in Bengal, India , in 1903. Educated in England at Eton , he moved to Burma in 1922 where he joined the Indian Imperial Police for five years. He eventually resigned because of his increasing disillusionment with British imperialism.
After a period doing a variety of jobs in France he returned to England where opened a village shop. Using the pseudonym, George Orwell, he began writing articles for magazines. His first book, Down and Out in Paris and London (1933) described his experiences as a struggling writer. This book was followed by three novels, Burmese Days A Clergyman's Daughter (1935) and Keep the Aspidistra Flying
In 1936 Orwell was commissioned by Victor Gollancz to produce a documentary account of unemployment in the north of England for his Left Book Club. The Road to Wigan Pier established Orwell as one of Britain's leading writers and marked a high point in literary journalism.
Orwell, a committed socialist , went to Spain in December 1936 to report on the Spanish Civil War . He soon decided to join the struggle against the Nationalist Army and became a member of the Lenin Division in Barcelona , a unit under the control of the Workers Party of Marxist Unification (POUM).

Biography of George Orwell (1903-1950)
George Orwell George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, India. The Blairs were relatively prosperous civil servants, working in India on behalf of the British Empire. Blair would later describe his family's socioeconomic status as "lower-upper middle class," a categorization commenting on the extraordinary degree to which British citizens in India depended on the Empire for their livelihood. Though the Blairs were able to live quite comfortably in India, they had none of the physical assets or independent investments that would have been enjoyed by their class in England proper. Ida Blair moved back to England in 1904 with Eric and his older sister Marjorie so that the children could be brought up in a more traditional, Christian environment. In England, Blair entered the public school system, and was admitted to Eton College in 1917. For most students of this era, Eton led directly to higher education at a university, often Oxford or Cambridge. Blair, however, shunned further formal schooling, and after leaving Eton in 1921 returned to India in 1922 to join the Indian Imperial Police. This work gave Blair his first real experiences with the poor and downtrodden whom he would later champion. Unhappy with being perceived as the "hand of the oppressor" in his police position, Blair resigned from the force in 1927 and returned to England that same year.

George Orwell, "Politics and the English Language," 1946
Most people who bother with the matter at all would admit that the English language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it. Our civilization is decadent and our language so the argument runs must inevitably share in the general collapse. It follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes. Underneath this lies the half-conscious belief that language is a natural growth and not an instrument which we shape for our own purposes. These five passages have not been picked out because they are especially bad I could have quoted far worse if I had chosen but because they illustrate various of the mental vices from which we now suffer. They are a little below the average, but are fairly representative examples. I number them so that i can refer back to them when necessary:
    1. I am not, indeed, sure whether it is not true to say that the Milton who once seemed not unlike a seventeenth-century Shelley had not become, out of an experience ever more bitter in each year, more alien [sic] to the founder of that Jesuit sect which nothing could induce him to tolerate.

Collector's Note:
George Orwell attempted in 1940 after the outbreak of World War II to enlist in His Majesty's armed forces. Because of ill-health, he failed. Had he succeeded and been killed in action he would be remembered by academic specialists, if at all. He would have been noted as a minor, not too successful English novelist and memoir writer who had penned some interesting critical essays and as a man considered by many of his contemporaries to be a rude person. Fortunately, Orwell did not die in that war, and today his name has become an oft-used adjective. "Orwellian" has become a synonym for the oppressive social forces that make us discontented and fearful, whether they be state regimentation, dissimulation at any level of life, or abusive propaganda. His 1940s writings, whether books or essays, have had lasting and smashing impact. A prolific writer, he constantly honed his ideas and his prose. He was tempered by adversity well into his early 40s, despite his Etonian background, he lived a hand-to-mouth existence, partly by choice (given his uncompromising nature) and partly by circumstance (his writing brought little remuneration). Nor did his political attitudes make life any easier: in a U.K. many of whose intellectuals and academics were infatuated with a false view of the Soviet Union, Orwell questioned the premises of its government and ideology.

George Orwell's 1984 with summary, essays, and more at Enotes [an error occurred while processing this directive] 1984 has come and gone, but George Orwell's prophetic nightmarish vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is timelier than ever. 1984 is still the great modern classic of "Negative Utopia"—a startingly original and haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing, from the first sentence to the last four words. No one can deny this novel's power, its hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions—a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time. We hope students, teachers and adventurous readers alike will find this site a useful and well-organized source of information and insight. Our story analysis section contains a synopsis, character assessment and examples of symbolism. We have also created a comprehensive study guide that helps you recognize all the important events going on. We recommend using the study guide as you read along in the book. We also invite you to participate in our brand new 1984 message board , where everyone can share ideas, ask questions and listen to different opinions. We encourage you to post there as often as you like!
