Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient , "History," and the Other
1. In this paper, I discuss the historical background of Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient and Anthony Minghella's adaption of the novel to film. Ondaatje's novel is fiction and the "truth" value of the historical background of this or any fictional text is of problematic and questionable relevance in the reading of literature or in the study of literature (that is, in most areas of literary study while in areas such as the sociology of literature this may not always be the case). However, research in audience studies shows that readers of fiction or viewers of films are voraciously interested in the "real" story of fictionalized persons and events. Indeed, in the case of The English Patient The English Patient was published in 1992 and won the Booker Prize in the same year and it also received a number of other awards such as the Trillium Prize. In 1996 it was released as a film, produced and directed by Anthony Minghella, with the cooperation of Ondaatje, and received seven Oscars.

Michael Ondaatje fuses exuberant storytelling with jazz rhythms and luxurious imagery in his bestselling novels. Born in Sri Lanka, educated in England, and currently a resident of Canada, Ondaatje draws on a wealth of sources to inspire his rich imagery. He emerged as one of Canada's most respected young poets in the 1960s, though he is best known as a novelist. His works of fiction include The English Patient, In the Skin of a Lion, Coming Through Slaughter, The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, and Anil's Ghost. He received the 1992 Booker Prize for The English Patient , a non-linear narrative of four people living in an abandoned Italian villa at the end of World War II. In 1996

"There's a laser scope . . . that can measure the vibrations in the glass of a window across the street, and then translate them into sounds. From there it's one stop to hearing the conversation going on in that room," says a character in Michael Ondaatje's new novel Divisadero . Decades earlier, a different character had already discovered a similar way of creating the vibrancy of life from small parts; as he lay helpless in a World War I diphtheria tent, he constructed the outside world through "maps of sound": the coughs of dying men, footsteps in mud, the sound of scalpels being set on rubber sheets. This idea that life can be analyzed by the smallest details is central to Divisidero . In the first few pages, one narrator paraphrases Lucien Freud: "Everything is biographical. . . . What we make, why it is made, how we draw a dog, who it is we are drawn to, why we cannot forget." In some ways, this seems counterintuitive. Writing teachers repeatedly tell us to focus on the telling detail, but here everything, unknowingly, contributes.

With his first novel since the internationally acclaimed The English Patient, Booker Prize—winning author Michael Ondaatje gives us a work displaying all the richness of imagery and language and the piercing emotional truth that we have come to know as the hallmarks of his writing. Anil’s Ghost transports us to Sri Lanka, a country steeped in centuries of tradition, now forced into the late twentieth century by the ravages of civil war. Into this maelstrom steps Anil Tissera, a young woman born in Sri Lanka, educated in England and America, who returns to her homeland as a forensic anthropologist sent by an international human rights group to discover the source of the organized campaigns of murder engulfing the island. What follows is a story about love, about family, about identity, about the unknown enemy, about the quest to unlock the hidden past–a story propelled by a riveting mystery. Unfolding against the deeply evocative background of Sri Lanka’s landscape and ancient civilization, Anil’s Ghost is a literary spellbinder–Michael Ondaatje’s most powerful novel yet. top of the page
Juxtapositions and fragments are central to the style and structure of Anil's Ghost . The novel opens with a scene in italics, in which we are introduced to Anil as part of a team of scientists unearthing the bodies of missing people in Guatemala. Then there is a brief scene in which Anil arrives in Sri Lanka to begin her investigation for the human rights group. This is followed by another scene in italics, describing "the place of a complete crime"a place where Buddhist cave sculptures were "cut out of the walls with axes and saws" [p. 12]. How do these sectionsupon which the author does not commentwork together, and what is the cumulative effect of such brief scenes?

Coming at a Story From Different Angles, the Author Constructs a Novel
By Bob Thompson Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, May 30, 2007; Page C01 TORONTO The more one talks to Michael Ondaatje about the way he writes his novels, the more one is drawn toward a simple, cautionary conclusion: Framed by the ceiling of his former publisher's office, the author describes his new novel, "Divisadero," as a "quite radical form." Kids, don't try this at home. Ask the author of "The English Patient," "Anil's Ghost" and the just-published "Divisadero" if he has ever worked from an outline and he bursts out laughing. "I did try once," he says. "I wrote a kind of treatment." But this brief stab at planning destroyed his enthusiasm for the material: "So then I said, 'Now, why would I want to write that?' "

Biography of Michael Ondaatje : a life in words
Biography of Michael Ondaatje, perhaps the most famous writer born in Ceylon, is reknowned for the Booker Prize winning The English Patient, among other works.
Michael Ondaatje, the first Canadian winner of the prestigious Booker Prize in 1992, is perhaps most famous for the work that won him that prize, a fictional World War romantic narrative since made into a film called The English Patient. While it is true to say that he is the first-ever recipient of the Booker Prize, he is also the first ever winner born in Ceylon(now called Sri Lanka). Born during World War II on 12th September 1943, Ondaatje emigrated to Canada at the age of 19 after spending a spell in England. There he attended the University of Toronoto where he gained a BA, afterwhich he obtained a Masters degree at Queens University. Ondaatje's first published work was a collection of poetry entitled The Dainty Monsters (1967) which he followed up with The Man With Seven Toes (1969) and Rat Jelly (1973). His first literary award came his way in 1970 at the age of 27, when he won the Canadian Governor General' Award for his collection of poetry, entitled The Collected Work of Billy the Kid written about the legendary outlaw. He received a second Governor General's Award in 1979 for an earlier collection of poetry, There's a Trick with a Knife I'm Learning to do (1963 - 1978). His work is characterised by a bleakly evocative narrative and minimalist dialogue, blending documentary and fictional accounts of real characters, such as his Coming Through Slaughter (1976) about the life of 1930's jazz cornetist Buddy Bolden and In the Skin of a Lion, a story about 1930's Canadian Immigrants. Jazz and cinema, in fact, have been recurring themes in Ondaatje's work and the author himself has written a number of screenplays and worked on films previously.
