Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám Edward Fitzgerald
The 12 th century Persian poet Omar Khayyám, is well known in the West, through the work of the English poet and translator Edward Fitzgerald. Published in 1859, Fitzgerald's "Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám" attracted little attention until 1860, when it was discovered by other artists and literary figures, such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti who was a poet, and is well-known as one of the painters of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Fitzgerald was a talented poet; however, his "Rubáiyát" is not a serious and scholarly translation of Khayyám's work, and represents many of his own ideas and line of thought. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, writers and poets quite often used Oriental works for inspiration. The original verses from which Fitzgerald drew his inspiration, are a collection of isolated and separate "quatrains", which resemble the Japanese haiku in function, if not in form. The quatrain, "robái" is a very popular form in Persian poetry, and nearly every Persian poet has written some. This is the only form of poetry attributed to Khayyám, whose fame in his own time was through his influential works as a mathematician and astronomer. Indeed, he was only twenty-four when he wrote his most important work, a pioneering treatise on algebra. Fitzgerald's "Rubáiyát" describes what he believed to be the thoughts and feelings of Omar Khayyám, with seemingly Eastern tones and colours, but in a way that would be appealing to a Western audience.

Notes. Introduction Omar Khayyam,
The Astronomer-Poet of Persia. Omar Khayyam was born at Naishapur in Khorassan in the latter half of
our Eleventh, and died within the First Quarter of our Twelfth
Century. The Slender Story of his Life is curiously twined about that of two other very considerable Figures in their Time and Country: one of whom tells the Story of all Three. This was Nizam ul Mulk, Vizier to Alp Arslan the Son, and Malik Shah the Grandson, of Toghrul Beg the Tartar, who had wrested Persia from the feeble Successor of Mahmud the Great, and founded that Seljukian Dynasty which finally roused Europe into the Crusades. This Nizam ul Mulk, in his Wasiyator Testamentwhich he wrote and left as a Memorial for future Statesmenrelates the following, as quoted in the Calcutta Review

From the moment of its publication, Elihu Vedder's achieved unparalleled success. The first edition appeared in Boston on 8 November 1884; six days later, it was sold out. Critics rushed to acclaim it as a masterwork of American art, and Vedder (1836 - 1923) as the master American artist. Now, over a hundred years after their first publication, all of Vedder's designs for the book, except the small publisher's mark, are available online from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's collection.

74. Edward Fitzgerald - Poetic Examples From BOB'S BYWAY
These rubáiyát, freely translated into English by Fitzgerald from the writings of omar Khayyám (omar, the Tentmaker), are short, epigrammatic quatrains,
http://www.poeticbyway.com/xfitzger.htm
EDWARD FITZGERALD
(Excerpts) The excerpts from this poem provide examples of quatrains using a rhyme scheme of aaxa.
I Wake! For the sun, who scatter'd into flight
The Stars before him from the Field of Night,
Drives Night along with them from Heav'n, and strikes
These excerpts reflect the prevalent carpe diem motif of the poem. II Before the phantom of False morning died,
Methought a Voice within the Tavern cried,
"When all the Temple is prepared within,
Why nods the drowsy Worshipper outside?" VII Come, fill the Cup, and in the fire of Spring
Your Winter-garment of Repentance fling:
The Bird of Time has but a little way
To flutterand the Bird is on the Wing. VIII Whether the Cup with sweet or bitter run, The Wine of Life keeps oozing drop by drop, A metaphor The Leaves of Life keep falling one by one. XII A Book of Verses underneath the Bough, A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Breadand Thou is the plural of a Persian word for "quatrain." Although a divergent view of Omar's works perceived them as examples of Oriental mysticism in which wine and the like were poetic symbols of diety, Fitzgerald held firmly to the concept that the rubáiyát were wholly materialistic, an expression of the Epicurean philosophy of "Eat, drink, and be merry."
