LINE OF INQUIRY SAMPLE I
Britta Ameel "Who shall measure the heat and violence of the poet’s heart when caught and tangled in a woman’s body?" Virginia Woolf in against their opposites—the West, the white race. Is this how women are defined as well? For centuries in our culture, women have been biologically and physiologically defined by their bodies, against their anatomical others, male bodies, and they are seen as, St. Thomas Aquinas points out, "misbegotten males." This would mean that all my attempts at using my mind, creating my poetry would be misbegotten, if I am a misbegotten male. I want to create the type of poetry that is more than "female" poetry, that is not misbegotten to males because I am female. I will write the poetry of the watched female, the poems of the male watcher and the female watcher (of herself and the rest of the world). I am curious, also, as to how a woman’s mind correlates to her body—during menstruation, is her mind working to shed something like her body is? What are the metaphors for the connections between body and mind of a woman? Can the language of the body be the language of the mind? And as Woolf asks, "who shall measure the heat and violence of a poet’s heart when caught and tangled in a woman’s body?" If I am writing out of my own heat and violence, why is it so important that it is tangled in my woman’s body? Woolf’s concern with the female artist makes me aware of my place in the world as a writer, a female, the watcher and the watched. I must make my place better known to myself through my writing.
