The Appropriation of Frank O'Hara

Stewart [view printer friendly version] While it is undisputable that contemporary American poetry is characterized by a great deal of diversity, the mainstream of American poetry is still dominated by the ubiquitous meditational free-verse poem. This type of poem is characterized by earnest attempts to craft small epiphanies out of inflated experiences and by a scarcely disguised determination to be poetic. Poems in this mode tend to come off as simultaneously pretentious and conventional. Stephen Burt, in "Poetry Criticism: What is it for?" notes that this meditational free-verse poetry, "third-generation American confessional poetry, poetry about the biographical and affective history of the self, by the mid-1980s had become omnipresent, exhausted, and dull" (paragraph 7). These free-verse poems tend to be well crafted, characterized by an almost overwhelming desire to communicate a personal voice. Nevertheless, in spite of the poetic mainstream's near-glorification of personal voice, the voices present in most mainstream poetry journals are often scarcely distinguishable from one another. To read through many journals is to be inundated by these largely univocal and conventional meditational lyrics. The tendency of these free-verse meditations to resemble one another is summed up by Bruce Bawer, who observes in "Poetry and the University," "Read one poem after another in a recent

Biographical History
Born in 1934 in Providence, Rhode Island, poet Ted Berrigan attended the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. He was a second-generation member of the New York school of poets, and along with Ron Padgett, published a small literary magazine, C , during 1963 and 1964. He taught at Yale University, the Iowa Writers Workshop, the University of Michigan, and Essex University in England, and also served as poet-in-residence at the City College of New York. Among his published volumes of poetry are The Sonnets Bean Spasms: Collaborations by Ted Berrigan and Ron Padgett In the Early Morning Rain The Drunken Boat (1974), and
