O'Hara, Frank (1926-1966) The influential poet Frank O'Hara wrote works informed by both modern art and the world of urban gay male culture. O'Hara was born in Baltimore on June 27, 1926. In 1927, his family moved to Grafton, Massachusetts, and O'Hara was educated in private schools until 1944. He served a two-year tour of duty in the Navy before beginning college at Harvard as a music major. He eventually changed his major to English and graduated with a B.A. in 1950; he completed an M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1951. Sponsor Message.
O'Hara began writing in earnest while at Michigan; he won the university's Hopwood Award in Creative Writing and wrote two plays, Try! Try! and Change Your Bedding that were mounted at the Poet's Theatre in Cambridge. On graduation, O'Hara assumed a position at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. He left for a two-year period in 1953 to 1955 to assume an associate editorship of Art News and then returned to MOMA as a special assistant to the International Program. In 1960, he was promoted to curator of paintings and sculptures.

Cycle or set: Songs on Poems of Frank O'Hara
Cycle Comments: All three volumes of the cycle include important notes, but the second volume has some comments particularly important for this cataloging: ". . . First, despite these songs' appearance in three slight volumes, it is my preference (rarely to be honored, I fear) that [the songs in this cycle] be performed as a totality. Second, this cycle was given its first complete solo performance by Richard Potter, a Washington, D.C. -based baritone, a staunch and stalwart supporter, who has earned my considerable gratitude. I was at the piano for that first performancein New York Cityfollowed by others in Washington and in London." Also, "Recordings of some of these songs are available by Christopher Trakas (MusicMasters), Carl Halvorsen (Musical Heritage Society) and Paul Sperry (Albany), and their pianists Steven Blier, Susan Almasi and Irma Vallecillo respectively." All three volumes include the note that one performer called the music a sort of "Rogers and Schoenberg" sound.

Frank O'Hara Poetry Page
Frank O'Hara was born in Baltimore in 1926 and raised in
Massachusetts. After service in the navy he studied at Harvard
and the University of Michigan, then moved to New York as soon as
he could. "I can't even enjoy a blade of grass," he once
wrote "unless I know there's a subway handy, or a record store or
some other sign that people do not totally regret life." From 1952
until his death in 1966 (he was run down by a dune buggy on Fire
Island), O'Hara was on the staff at the Museum of Modern Art. He
was active in the art scene (most notably with the abstract
expressionist painters), continued as a playwright and critic, and
was the epicenter of a circle of poets that came to be called the New York School. These poets included John Ashbury, Kenneth Koch, and James Schuyler, who derived inspiration from paintings by Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, and others. In an essay entitled "Personism: A Manifesto," O'Hara sheds some light on his views towards poetry, declaring that "Nobody should experience anything they don't need to, if they don't need
