(Full name Mary Flannery O'Connor) American short story writer, novelist, and essayist. The following entry provides criticism on O'Connor's works from 1982 through 2001. For criticism prior to 1982, see CLC, Volumes 1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 13, 15, and 21; for discussion of her novel Wise Blood (1952), see CLC, Volume 66; and for discussion of her short stories in Everything That Rises Must Converge (1965), see CLC, Volume 104.
    INTRODUCTION
O'Connor is considered one of the foremost short story writers in American literature. She was an anomaly among post-World War II authors—a Roman Catholic from the Bible-belt South whose stated purpose was to reveal the mystery of God's grace in everyday life. Aware that not all readers shared her faith, O'Connor chose to depict salvation through shocking, often violent action upon characters who are spiritually or physically grotesque. Moreover, her penchant for employing ironic detachment and mordant humor prompted some critics to classify O'Connor as an existentialist or nihilist. She also infused her fiction with the local color and rich comic detail of her southern milieu, particularly through her skillful presentation of regional dialect. A complex system of symbolism and allegory adds further resonance to O'Connor's writing.

Based upon the book, The Literary 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Novelists, Playwrights, and Poets of All Time by Daniel S. Burt (New York: Facts on File, 2001), the project offers full listings by ranking and through a name index. Specialized pages offer women writers, American authors, United Kingdom authors, and world authors grouped by continent. Developed solely for this website, additional project resources include significant authors in children's literature and a compilation of other "top 100" literature projects. Each author's entry includes online biographical research and landmarks, scholarly resources, major works online, and Busse Library offerings for the novelist, dramatist, or poet. This project, and its inspiration, develop from a tradition to select the world's most important authors who made a lasting contribution to literature and to compile a selection of history's most significant published texts in fiction and nonfiction.

    Chapter 8: Flannery O'Connor's
    Everything That Rises Must Converge
O'Connor occupies an interesting position in American Literature to the extent that she writes from a strongly religious point of view, specifically from a strongly Deep Southern Roman Catholic point of view. (If you wish to find out a little more about Flannery O'Connor's life and works it would be a good idea to read the short introduction by Hermione Lee in your set text Everything That Rises Must Converg e.) Even more interesting, perhaps, is the fact that her stories make use of what might be regarded as quite bizarre effects such as the grotesque and the blackly humorous to convey her deeply religious vision. What all these stories have in common is Flannery O'Connor's concern with the articulation of her faith. Often these stories are about people who have lost their faith and the focus of the story then becomes the reintroduction of these people to the power of God and the power of God's grace, more often than not achieved in violent ways. Let's now explore these ideas through the stories.

From essay "The Church and the Fiction writer"...
What the fiction writer will discover, if he discovers anything at all, is that he himself cannot move or mold reality in the interests of abstract truth. The writer learns, perhaps more quickly than the reader, to be humble in the face of what-is. What-is is all he has to do with; the concrete is his medium; and he will realize eventually that fiction can transcend its limitations only by staying within them. Henry James said that the morality of a piece of fiction depended on the amount of 'felt life' that was in it. The Catholic writer, in so far as he has the mind of the Church, will feel life from the standpoint of the central Christian mystery: that it has, for all its horror, been found by God to be worth dying for. But this should enlarge not narrow his field of vision. [Via here posted by TS @ 7:15 AM 0 comments
