MORAL QUESTIONS IN TIM O'BRIEN'S GOING AFTER CACCIATO
HOW TO DO RIGHT IN AN EVIL SITUATION
Going After Cacciato Going After Cacciato is "not atrocity-based in the manner of much Vietnam War autobiography and fiction, [it does] record incidents in which Vietnamese civilians are beaten or killed and have their livestock and homes destroyed" (270). This book has an almost offhanded-like way of dealing with these My Lai-like atrocities. Why? What's going on here? Well, one thing that one must take into consideration is the author's aim. As quoted by Timothy J. Lomperis at a conference, O'Brien has said, "'For me, the purpose of writing fiction is to explore moral quandaries. The best fiction is almost always the fiction which has a character having to make a difficult moral choice'" (52). This certainly comes out in the fragging incident, when the squad kills Lieutenant Sidney Martin. But there's something more. Another time, O'Brien was quoted as saying, "My concerns have to do with the abstractions: ... How does one do right in an evil situation?" (Bates 263). That is the big question, of course, that this novel deals with. See, the point that O'Brien is making is not that war is an evil situation. He's trying to take that for granted and move beyond. Now that you've got this evil situation, what do you do? Where is the good? In the observation post, Paul Berlin "remembered what his father had said on their last night along the Des Moines River. 'You'll see some terrible stuff, I guess. That's how it goes. But try to look for the good things, too. They'll be there if you look. So watch for them'" (O'Brien 58). So he does look for the good things. That's beauty being born out of despair, if you will. He enjoys watching the sunrise. And Bates refers to Paul Berlin helping treat a young Vietnamese girl and having sensitive feelings towards her (270). This is almost as if to say that war brings out the best as well as the worst in us. Some may argue that it's almost worth it. ("Almost" being the key word for clearly the good in a war does not outweigh or even equal the bad.)

Living The Nightlife: Teaching the Vietnam War Through Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried
Vaughan Boone
Lee High School I do feel that Vietnam . . . is still the single prevailing fact of American life. All our present anguish comes in the wake of the Vietnam War; it is the accumulation of the Vietnam War.
INTRODUCTION
An image from the waning days of the Vietnam war: on the tiny black and white television in the kitchen, footage of U.S. soldiers emerging from the jungle with rifles and machine guns, bandoleers slung across their shoulders, packs of cigarettes tucked in the bands of their helmets. Growing up in the early 1970s in Norfolk, Virginia, home to the second largest naval base in the country, the war was all around me. People wore silver bracelets with the names of soldiers missing in action stamped on them, and the flag at the MacArthur Memorial often flew at half-mast, and I remember the day one of my second grade classmates left school early when his older brother went from missing to killed in action. Living in Virginia, home to so much history, had a profound impact on my own burgeoning interest in history. Going to Appomattox and Richmond stirred my interest in the Civil War as profoundly as the trips to Yorktown and Williamsburg made Colonial history come alive. Though many people know Plymouth Rock and 1620, all Virginians are highly aware (and sensitive) to the fact that the first permanent English settlement was established 13 years prior to this at Jamestown, and frequent visits to this sight sparked my interest in pre-Colonial history.

Timothy Leary's Head
They say you can't trust anything on the Line. Now, I always thought that was a bit much. I mean, people are people, mostly. If something is true they'll tell you it's true and if something is a story, they'll tell you it's a story, right ? And everyone makes mistakes, but that's what the Shadow Line is for - so that people will see your stuff and let you know when you've made a mistake. I used to think that. There's something else that they don't say, though. The Shadow Line is big, really, really big, and sometimes you can find just a little bit of something and then go away and do things and not know how much you don't know. I know this now. There were four of us. We used to meet in Danielle's place, mostly. Mom is an actress, and she mostly works from home, so we can't go to my place. Stezza's dad is really grey, and you don't even want to know about Jude's folks. So like I said, we used to go over to Fremont and do noids and drink beer and do stuff and decide what we wanted to do with our lives. That was the months just coming up to the Purchase. Danielle is kind of what you think of when you think of what moms are like. Real moms, not moms in the chips. Though my mom is just like a mom in the chips. So she gets to play a mom in the chips, even though she's really a bit thin. Danielle is big and cuddly and really nice. She's also kind of shy, and she has this thing for hair. You make her shy at all, and she won't feel too good unless she can sit behind someone and fix their hair. I keep my hair long for Danielle, really. She's a good person. That night she was putting some kind of big kinky knot thing in my hair, which looked cool. Danielle gets shy easy, and I wish I didn't make her shy so much.
