[on comparing the Vietnam War to the Iraq War] "The Iraq thing has the feel of a potential quagmire where we just get deeper and deeper and deeper involved, and when that happens it’s harder and harder and harder to get out. There’s also the similarity with the difficulty in finding the enemy. In Vietnam, we couldn’t find the V.C., they were blended in with the population, and we’re having the same problem in Iraq . . ." edit Life and Career
O'Brien was born in Austin Minnesota , a town of about 9,000 people (a setting which figures prominently in his novels). When O'Brien was 10, his family, including a younger sister and brother, moved to Worthington, Minnesota , a place that once billed itself as "the turkey capital of the world." Worthington had a large influence on O’Brien’s imagination and early development as an author. The town is located on Lake Okabena in the western portion of the state and serves as the setting for some of his stories, especially those in the collection titled The Things They Carried . He earned his BA in Political Science from Macalester College in . That same year he was drafted into the infantry and was sent to Vietnam , where he served from to . He served in the Americal Division , a platoon of which participated in the infamous My Lai Massacre . O'Brien has said that when his unit got to the area around My Lai (referred to as "Pinkville" by the U.S. forces), "we all wondered why the place was so hostile. We did not know there had been a massacre there a year earlier. The news about that only came out later, while we were there, and then we knew."

So come all ye fans of the roots and the branches, the new and the old, the singer and the songwriter. I like to view the big mountain of music from every angle, and I hope you'll check back often. As my buddy Charles used to say, "Now that you know where I live, don't be a stranger!"
Tim's Instruments: Gibson J-50 Guitar Charles Sawtelle always said that a car or a house or an instrument will find you, if you let it. This one found me after Charles and I had discussed what I wanted for several months. He saw it one day in the Denver Folklore Center. It's a 1950 Gibson J-50. Charles also said older instruments will teach you how to play them, and I've learned some good country songs from this guitar.

Boxing is a complicated and intricate sport to do right. I was never a heavy puncher but my speed was an asset. I also hated getting hit in the face and learned to evade getting hit in the head, though some say not enough. I followed the sport religiously and read every book about it.
As time went by I started to recognize my true talents and I pursued art in college. After I graduated and began illustrating, I found myself in Philadelphia, living in a neighborhood with a boxing gym.
My weight was no longer a svelte 147, so I entered the gym and started working out. Quickly, I fell in love again. This was a real gym, inner city, gritty and full of life. The fighters were all shapes and sizes except white. I was the only white guy. This earned me the nickname, “Rocky” to the kids in the gym. In this gym I learned that my skills were pretty good, but I knew nothing about fighting inside, a Philly specialty. I also learned that I was not going to ever be a boxer. Every good boxer in that gym taught me that lesson in sparring. Boxing was something I learned and I thought about how to do it all the time. To throw a left hook I had to think of the mechanics of it and try it out over and over. The gym was understaffed and I began training kids. This was an amazing addition to my life and helped me in ways I won’t go into in this article but someday soon.

  • Singer, songwriter Singer-songwriter Tim O'Brien draws from many influences to create a unique blend of traditional bluegrass, honky tonk, folk, and swing. He helped to form the award-winning bluegrass band Hot Rize in 1978, a group he performed with until it disbanded in 1990. He has released several solo albums, worked as a backing musician for other artists, formed his own record label, and performed and recorded with his sister, musician Mollie O'Brien. Born on March 16, 1954, in Wheeling, West Virginia, O'Brien grew up hearing famed country artists, including Charley Pride, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Country Gentlemen, and Jimmy Martin perform on radio's WWVA Jamboree. As he told an interviewer from the Puremusic website, when he was 13 years old, his parents would drop him off at the Jamboree. "I'd pay $2.50 to get into the cheap balcony seats. But then, on special Saturday nights you might see Buck Owens, Charley Pride, Jerry Reed, or Merle Haggard." O'Brien also listened to the Beatles; Peter, Paul, and Mary; and Roger Miller. When he was a teenager the self-taught musician traveled to Colorado and joined bluegrass guitarist Charles Sawtelle, banjo player Pete Wernick, and bass player/singer mike Scap (who was soon replaced by Nick Forster) to create the band Hot Rize (named after the secret ingredient in Martha White Self-Rising Flour). According to John Metzger at The Music Box website, the band "not only inspired artists within its own genre, but also fueled the rise of the jam band scene in Colorado."
